  Notes	Nathaniel was a religious man, but he left the established church. He joined the group called Separatists or New Lights, later called Baptists. In 1749 he signed a petition requesting that those who did not belong to t established church should not be required to pay taxes for its maintenance. At a town meeting in 1755 the citizens of Chatham decided that the five residents of Chatham, including Nathaniel Bassett, who had become Baptists should continue to pay taxes for the ministry. A few years later, however, this practice was abolished and he was thereafter listed among the Baptists not taxed for the maintenance of the ministry.
