- RECEIVES SECOND SIGHT
Mrs. Amelia Colvin, of Normal, Reads Again Without Her Glasses at the Age of 83
The statement that one is entering his second childhood usually brings to the mind pictures of feebleness of body and failing mental faculties, but in teh case of Mrs. Amelia Colvin, of North School street in Normal, this kind of a picture is the wrong one. This lady, although 83 years of age, is quite hearty and robust, and transacts all of her private business, often wlking down town - a distance from her home of nearly a mile - when the weather is pleasant. Her sight is rapidly returning to her and she is now able to read good clear print without any glasses, but for fine print still requires her reading glasses.
Miss Amelia E., Newport was born in Boone county, Kentucky, October 14, 1819. She was of Quaker extraction and was brought up in a Quaker community about twenty jiles from Cincinnati, on the Kentucky side of the Ohio river. In 1838 she was married to John Colvin, a lawyer, living near her home. In 1852 Mr. and Mrs. Colvin moved to Putnam county, Illinois, where they raised a family of seven children, five sons and two daughters. All of the children are now living; two sons are in California, one in LaSalle county, Illinois, and the other one makes his home in Normal; one daughter is married and lives in Boonville, Ill., the other daughter makes her home with her mother in Normal.
Mr. John Colvin died in Putnam county twenty-three years ago, leaving a comfortable estate. For eight years Mrs. colvin remained there and manged her own affairs, then she moved to Normal, hwere she has resided ever since.
Mrs. Colvin is a tall stately appearing lady, and with the exception of her snow white hair bears no indication that she is over 60 or 70 years of age. She has always enjoyed good health and has not had the services of a doctor for the past fifteen years. Her hearing is good and she is a most entertaining conversationalist.
Mrs. Colvin's eyesight falied her gradually as she advanced in years until she required two pairs of glasses, one pair to wear all of the time in her work and the other, a stronger pair, to use in reading. About a year ago her eyesight began to improve and now she wears her glasses only when reading fine print. Her seeing is constantly improving, however, and she hopes soon to be able to lay aside her glasses entirely.
During the past two months, Mrs. Colvin's health has not been the best, but she hope to improve greatly upon the advent of spring. Mrs. Colvin is a most estimable and highly respected woman and a member of the First Methodist church in Normal.
DEATH OF MRS. COLVIN
Mrs. Amelia COlvin, one of the oldest residents of Normal, died at 7:20 yesterday morning a her home on North School street. The deceased has been in unusual good health for one of her age for the past few years and the immediate cause of her death was due to a cold she contracted a short time ago. This, coupled with heart trouble, made it hard for her to withstand the suffering, and death reaped its reward yesterday morning.
She was born November 14, 1819, in Boone county, Kentucky, and consequently was 88 years of age last November. She came to Illinois with her husband, John Colvin, in the year 1852 and settled at Mt. Palatine in Putnam county. Her husband died in 1878, and in the year 1885 she moved to this city, which place has since been her home.
Mrs. Colvin was well known and universally liked. She was a Christian woman, having been a member of the Methodist church since girlhood. She always adhered to religious principles, and was an upright Christian woman. She has a host of friends in this city and Bloomington who will be grieved to learn of her demise. She leaves three sons and two daughters: Frank, of Kansas City, Kas.; Joseph, of Pomona, Cal.; Albert, formerly of this city, but who is now superintendent of schools at Rankin, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Hargiss, of Bondville, Ill., and Miss Frances Colvin, at home. There are also two granddaughters Misses Grace and Maude Colvin, who have made their home with the departed for over twenty years past. The burial will take place at her old home in Mt. Palatine. The announcement of the funeral will be made later.
