Joseph and Martha moved from Council Grove, Kansas to Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1894. They lived on Fair Ave. In the summer of 1898 they ran a summer resort at Summer Layton on the PawPaw River. They moved to the farm at Riverside in the winter of 1898-99.
DEATH OF SAMUEL B. DENNING
At 15 minutes past 12 yesterday morning, at his home on North School street in Normal, occurred the death of Mr. Samuel Brown Denning. Death was caused by generaldebility and old age, he being in his 89th year. Mr. Denning was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, in 1811. At the age of 3 years he was left an orphan and taken and raised by his grandfather, V. Hart. In February, 1833, he was married Elizabeth Alexander at Lancaster, Pa. In 1835 they came west to Knox county, Ohio, where they lived on a farm until 1841, when they came on to Illinois and settled on a farm in Montgomery county, where they lived for eight years. In 1849 they came to a farm four miles south of Bloomington and later purchased and occupied another farm west of Bloomington. In 1872 they left the farm and built the present home on North School street in Normal, where they have ever since resided. Mr. Denning was one of the pioneer settlers of central Illinois and traveled across the country here when much of it was an unoccupied prairie. He lived in the vicinity when the land now occupied by the I.S.N.U and surrounding town was offered at $7 per acre and went without a buyer, while now short lots are sold for several times that much per front foot. He became a member of the Methodist church when 10 years of age and was constant follower of the faith throughout his life. Through and accident when a young man he lost the sight of one eye, and later in life, being an incessant reader, the sight of his other eye was impaired, and for the last twelve yaers he has been without sight. His wife passed away six years ago in her 87th year. They lived a long and prosperous life together and leave a family of four sons two of whom are preachers in the Methodist church, and the youngest of whom is 54 years old, and three daughters. Misses Lizzie and Lou B. Denning reside at home; Mrs. J.A. Kuhn, B.V. and John W. Denning in Normal; Joseph, of Benton Harbor, Mich., and William Denning, of Elmwood, Ill.
