Their Golden Wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. B. Bassett yesterday celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home on South Fell avenue. The event was honored in a very pleasant informal way be a reception, arranged by their children and attended by their neighbors and old-time friends. A part of the guests were present during the afternoon and the remainder in the evening. Mr. Bassett and Miss Lucinda Mead were married fifty years ago yesterday at Greensburg, Indiana. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J.G. Monfort and one of the most pleasant greetings received yesterday came through the mail from this distinguished reverend gentleman, who is the aged editor of the Herald and Presbyter, the official paper of the Presbyterian church of this country. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett went to his farm in LaSalle county, three and a half miles northwest of Tonica, where they resided for thirty-four years, and where their children were born and raised, and they laid up a competence for their later years. Sixteen years ago they moved to Normal and resided for a time on North School street until the home in which they now live was completed. Although well along in years, neither of these people carry heavily the burden of age. Their pathway through life together has been a happy one, properly seasoned with work, and they are both still active in life's duties, he looking after his business affairs and she, aside from her home duties, taking an active part in the literary work of a prominent club of the city. Aside from the neighbors and friends, there were present of their children yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Ira Bassett and son, who reside on the old home farm near Tonica; Mrs. Bert Bassett and little daughter of Williamette; Mr. Arthur Bassett, who is at the head of the Bloomington conservatory of music, and Miss Irene Bassett, supervisor of music in the Bloomington schools.
B. BASSETT OF NORMAL IS DEAD
Aug. 28, 1907
BODY BROUGHT HOME YESTERDAY
Word was received Friday of the death of Mr. B. Bassett at the summer cottage of Mr. Arthur Bassett at Walloon Lake, Mich. The family were spending the summer at the lake and Mr. Bassett had been seemingly perfectly well until Tuesday of this week,, when he had a stroke of paralysis. He died Thursday morning. The family reached Normal with the body yesterday noon.
Barzilla Bassett was born July 2, 1926, near Russellville, O. He was 81 years old at the time of his death. In 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucina J. Mead, and moved to a farm near Tonica, LaSalle county, Illinois, where he lived for thirty-four years. The family have lived in Normal for the past twenty years.
Mr. Bassett is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Ada B. Colvin, of Pomona, Cal., and Miss Irene Bassett, of Normal. Also three sons, Mr. Ira Bassett, of Tonica; Arthur Bassett, director of the Bloomington Conservatory of Music, and Prof. Herbert Bassett, superintendent of the Normal public schools. The deceased has been an active member of the Methodist church since boyhood. Mr. Bassett was a man of exceptionally fine character, and was loved and esteemed by all who knew him and especially by his nearest neighbors, who met him daily and knew his innermost life. It was his habit to think of others first and himself last and his passing away will leave a vacancy which will be felt.
Funeral services will be held at the home, 610 South Fell avenue, at 12:30 o'clock today. The body will be taken to Tonica, via the Illinois Central train leaving Normal at 2 o'clock. The interment will be in the Tonica Cemetery.

Morgan pastor of the Normal Methodist church and of which the deceased was a member and active worker before his death, was in charge of the services. He spoke at length of the noble life of the departed one, and dwelt especially on the esteem in which he was always held in the communities in which he resided. There was no music but the pastor in charge read several songs. Immediately following the services the body was taken over the Illinois Central to Tonica at 3 o'clock. Last Thursday night a burglar entered the residence of Mrs. B. Bassett on South Fell avenue, corner of First street, and made away with Mr. Bassett's watch, $6 in money and his pocket knife. The valuables were taken from the bedside where he was sleeping. Entrance was gained to the house through a window by cutting out a screen and the thief left his knife in the window. Mr. Bassett on Saturday recovered his knife from a resident of the west side, who found it sticking in one of the windows on the morning before. The thief had made and entrance there in the same way as at Mr. Bassett's and left the knife in the window, but was frightened away before he secured any booty.
