He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Windham Bass, and a son-in-law, David Groce and brothers, Joe, Charlie, Jr., Lanace "Dick", Ray and Clifton Bass; sisters, Ruby Pender, Cynthia Heath, Alma Rhodes, Nellie Sauls and Doris Sauls. The family wished to express sincere gratitude to two individuals who gave so much care and love to Mr. Bass during his months of declining health, nephew, Randy Bass and caregiver, Wanda Lane. Services for Betty will be held on Wednesday May 18th at the Southminster Presbyterian Church in Wanamaker, Indiana, where she had been a member since 1940. Visitation for friends and family will be from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at the church. The service will begin at 1:00 PM. The burial will be at Acton Cemetery following the service. Betty was a homemaker. She raised her family in Wanamaker and worked part-time as a substitute teacher and kindergarten assistant. | 52309 | Windham County Observer, Putnam, Connecticut, Wednesday, 7 May 1913 Edward Bassett Edward Bassett, 57, died at the home of his son, A.M. Bassett, Warrenville, at 6:15 Friday night of pneumonia. He had been sick a week but was in bed only two days. Mr. Bassett was a native of Bristol, this state, son of Zadock and Hannah (Bassett) Bassett. He lived the greater portion of his life in Bristol where he was employed in shops. About nine years ago he went to Warrenville where he made his home with his son. Mr. Bassett was a prominent member of the Grange, belonged to Pomona and the State Grante and held offices in all of them. He leaves a widow and two sons, A.M. Bassett of Warrenville and Frank Bassett of Terryville and seven grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the home of A.M. Bassett Sunday afternoon at 3 o?clock, conducted by Rev. B.C. Bugbee. He was the husband of Gwendolyn Bassett. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Miriam (Gilbody) Bassett and Robert E. Bassett. Bobby served in the Coast Guard in his early years and was a retired mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He loved to fish, help out and spend time at the Portuguese American Social Club and frequent Foxwoods. Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Laura Jeanne Verdecchia and her husband Alan P. Verdecchia of Coventry, David J. Bassett and Jason J. Bassett both of Cranston, and a stepdaughter Myra Thompson of Atlanta, GA. He also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, Amanda Bassett, Kayla Verdecchia, Tori Bassett, Brittany Verdecchia, Liam Bassett and Samia-Grace Thompson. He was the brother of David J. September 24, 2020 Betty Jean Bassett, age 93, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 at West Ridge Specialty Care in Knoxville, Iowa. Betty was born on October 31, 1926 to John and Florence (Wohlwend) Hoover in Elkhart, Polk County, Iowa. She attended country school in Bremer County until her 10th year when she was called to work on the farm after her two older brothers left for the service during WWII. She also cared for her invalid mother and through letter writing for her, to the son of family friends, she met her future husband, who was serving in the Navy. Betty and John C. Bassett were united in marriage on August 31, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa and were blessed with seven children. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage before John passed away July 9, 1991. Betty was a great homemaker and worked hard raising seven kids while John was an over the road truck driver on long delivery trips. She was an excellent cook and baker. It was many a day we would come home from school and smell the wonderful meal she prepared for the evening, beginning with homemade bread. She also made sure we all graduated. Her greatest joy was always her family and she loved the big gatherings that were held throughout the years. Betty is survived by her 4 daughters, Marlene Alcorn, Delores (Gary) Cowman of Knoxville, IA, Debbie (Neil) Montz of Corydon, IA, Linda Houge of Williams Bay, WI, 3 sons, Bob (Valerie) Bassett of Bussey, IA, Jim (Betty) Bassett and John (Bobbi) Bassett of Knoxville, IA; one sister, Vivian Shrader of Warsaw, MO; 4 brothers, John (Barb) Haugland of Solon, IA, Ron (Barb) Hoover of Russell, IA, Doyle (Janet) Hoover of Chariton, IA, Kenneth Hoover of Indianola, IA; 2 brothers-in-law, Kenneth Bassett of Winterset, IA, Alvin (Shirley) Bassett of Waukee, IA; one sister-in-law, Ethel Bassett of Columbia, MO; 26 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren (plus 1 on the way); and 5 great-great-grandchildren. February 3, 2023 Delores Marie (Bassett) Cowman was born on September 18, 1948 to John Clarence and Betty Jean (Hoover) Bassett. Delores was the second of the Bassett?s seven children. She graduated from Van Meter High School with the class of 1966. Delores was united in marriage to Carl Lee Busch and to this union 3 daughters were born. Darbie Lynn, Amanda Marie and Jodie Jon, they later divorced. Delores met the love of her life, Gary Raymond Cowman, through mutual friends and were united in marriage on April 15, 1988 after 13 years of being together. Following high school Delores entered the work field working for Farm Bureau and Employer?s Mutual Insurance companies before being hired by Knoxville Water Works on May 9, 1977. She retired after nearly 30 years of employment on January 26, 2007. She also served as a reserve police officer for the Knoxville Police Department for several years. Delores and Gary were nearly inseparable and loved to visit with friends at coffee time, breakfast, or dinner at Mr. C?s, Beulah?s Café, Downtown Diner or Manny?s. They spent many nights at Prairie Meadows where she loved to play KENO, they spent hours sitting at the kitchen table, watching westerns, doing scratch offs or visiting with whichever kids or grandkids may have stopped by. They also loved to travel to Las Vegas to visit their Vegas Family, Fabian and Giselle and their children, grandchildren and extended family. She was an amazing cook and loved to have family dinners. Her greatest joy was her family, most especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their events. Delores was the most caring, unconditional loving, hard-working lady loved by so many in our community and beyond. We take comfort knowing she was welcomed to heaven by those who preceded her in death. Her daughter, Amanda Johnson, parents, John and Betty Bassett, sister Marlene Alcorn, sisters in law Dale Marie Bassett, Linda Cowman and Vera Sparks, brothers in law Richard Houge and Richard Sparks along with a host of extended family members and friends. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Gary Cowman, daughters Darbie (Dominick), Jodie, Lory and Jenni (Alan), son Fabian (Giselle Mora) Difilippo. January 3, 2023 Marlene Louella Bassett-Alcorn was born on December 4, 1946, to John Clarence and Betty Jean (Hoover) Bassett. Marlene was the first of the Bassett?s seven children. She graduated from Van Meter High School with the class of 1964. Marlene was united in marriage to Larry Wayne Alcorn on December 30, 1965, and to this union 3 children were born. Daniel Wayne, Victoria Michelle, and Matthew David. Following high school Marlene attended and graduated from American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines with an Administrative Assistant Certificate and later in life returned to AIB and achieved a certificate in Hospitality. Marlene held various jobs over the years, spending several years at Pella Corporation, served as the Director of the Senior Meals program for Marion County, Geetings Warehouse and Jacobson Trucking Corporation. Marlene was an avid reader, and enjoyed watching classic movies, Big Bang Theory, Supernatural and Jeopardy. She crocheted and knitted beautiful afghans for all of the kids and grandkids. She spent hours researching family history and genealogy and creating a database full of information on the Bassett, Loynachan, Hoover, and Alcorn families. However, Marlene?s greatest passion in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Spending time with them brought her the greatest joy, even arranging her work schedule to be able to care for Vicki?s children while Vicki worked. She never missed any of their events and always went with Vicki and her family on every family vacation. Some of them were even geared to her interests, such as the trip to Graceland, the Black Hills, and Deadwood in South Dakota and to Germany and Virginia to visit Dan and his family. Marlene was called home to be with the Lord on January 3, 2023, with Vicki, Dan and Tori by her side. She passed peacefully with Elvis? How Great Thou Art playing in the background. We take comfort knowing she was welcomed to heaven by those who preceded her in death. Her parents, John and Betty Bassett, sister in law Dale Marie Bassett, brother in law Richard Houge, and niece Amanda Johnson along with a host of extended family members and friends. Those left to cherish her memory include son Daniel (Shannon) Alcorn, daughter Victoria (Rick) Dye and son Matthew Alcorn. | 52318 | Wing Mortuary Arthur Lavern Bassett Sr. (Picture included) June 13, 1932 ? March 11, 2019 Arthur Lavern Bassett Sr., 1932 ? 2019. Our loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend returned to his heavenly home on March 11, 2019. He passed away peacefully in West Jordan, Utah. He spent the last days of his life surrounded by his loving and devoted posterity. Art was born on June 13, 1932, in Broken Bow, Nebraska, to Edith Opal Life and Joseph Irenus Bassett. He was the fifth of seven children. His family moved to Idaho in 1945, where he attended Jr. High and High School. In 1951, Art joined the Air National Guard and was stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then Clovis, New Mexico. He was honorably discharged from the Reserves in 1954. Art worked for several dairy companies between 1955 and 1962 before entering the sales industry. He sold life insurance for the majority of his career and enjoyed meeting and helping people. Art met his life-long sweetheart, Anna May Wright, in Salt Lake City, and they were married on October 31, 1951. In 1952, Art was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; and in 1955, he and Anna May were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. He was an active and devoted member of the church, and served faithfully in many callings throughout his life. Art demonstrated kindness, patience, and love to all those with whom he associated. He and Anna May spent the majority of their married life living in Southern California raising their nine children. Art and Anna May loved to travel to visit family. They attended most of their grandchildren?s baby blessings, baptisms, high school graduations, and weddings. They loved their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and cared deeply for each of them. Art was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Anna May; his parents, Joseph and Opal Bassett; his siblings, Betty West, Claudice Bassett, Ken Bassett, and Richard Bassett; daughter-in-law, Janet Siebenthal Bassett; and grandson, Stuart Hardy. | 52320 | WINKS, MARY JANE nee AMON Mary Jane Amon was born on the 3 August 1849 at Mortlake, Surrey, England, the daughter of Thomas and Priscilla Amon nee Bassett. The Amon family came to New Zealand about 1856 and settled near Scotts Ferry, at the mouth of the Rangitikei River. On the 18 September 1871, Mary Jane married John Alexander Winks at Parewanui, and their first days of married life were spent driving 24 calves of Mary Jane's to their new home in Hawera, more than 80 miles away. The Maoris of Rangitikei had always been friendly with the Europeans, but in Taranaki there had been hostility for some time, and Mary Jane was very apprehensive, expecting "brown forms to spring from behind every flax and toitoi bush along the route" until the sight of the Hawera blockhouse "filled her with infinite relief". Their first child , James, was born there (site of Welsh McCarthy) in 1873. The couple's first home was in High Street, (now the site of the ANZ Bank) and John built a two-storeyed home here, with an outside staircase leading to the upper living quarters from their baker and butchery business. John rode into the bush to buy cattle from the Maoris, as well as advising them concerning their problems and attending to any mail they wished to have written. Meanwhile Mary Jane, still apprehensive of Maoris, served in the shop on her own, fleeing on one occasion when confronted by two large tattooed men. When Mary Jane's ninth child was born in 1887, the old chief Hukanui Manaia, a great friend of John's, wished the baby to be named after him. At least 12 Maori women sat on the lawn with gifts, awaiting the birth, sure it was a boy, and after much persuasion, the baby was named Walter Manaia Winks. In 1884, the family moved to Victoria Street opposite the Catholic Church, and in 1893, the family, now with 11 children, moved to a large property at Normanby, building "The Falls" homestead. The problem of clothing 12 children, six of them girls, was overcome by installing a dressmaker twice a year for a period of three months. The materials were bought during a large shopping session in Hawera, and then the dressmaker arrived to begin on the underclothing, working through to frocks with frills and buttons. Mary Jane had strong views concerning the consumption of alcohol, and with her neighbour Belinda, wife of Francis Job Gane, campaigned for prohibition in the late 1890s. Marrion was predeceased by her husband David in 1975, son Donald in 1965 and daughter Davina at birth; her parents, Harriett and Adelbert Bassett; and brother Robert Bassett. Surviving are her daughter Evelyn (Gary) Evans; granddaughters, Leslie (Mike) MacCorby, Linda (Guy) Phillips, Laurie (Darrell) Carriere and Lorna (Ken) Blue all of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren, Marissa and Matthew MacCorby, Emma and Sarah Phillips, Ryland and Kyle Carriere and Elijah Blue. Also very special to Mom were her nieces and nephews. Marrion was born in Dartmouth, NS and moved to Winnipeg as a young child with her family. Marrion attended Lord Roberts and Kelvin High School. Upon graduation she went to work as a secretary. In 1933 she married David Taylor. Until Dad's passing they enjoyed and shared 42 years together. Mom was very active in St. Alban's and St. Patrick's Anglican Churches. Music played a large part in Mom's life. She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied Dad when he sang his many Scottish favourites. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling, especially their trip to England and Scotland. Bowling, playing bridge and bingo and doing word puzzles were Mom's favourite pastimes. Over the years Mom enjoyed her precious moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These times became more precious and cherished during her latter stay at Calvary Place. The family would like to thank the staff from Calvary Place for their caring support over the years. Mom was very grateful for their kindness and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (entrance on Aubrey Street), Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11. Janet was born on April 17, 1956 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She grew up and resided in St. Vital all her life. She graduated from Dakota Collegiate and completed certificates in Business Accountancy and Business Administration from Red River Community College. Janet put as much effort and dedication into her family and job as she put into the sport of curling. The family cottage was one of her most cherished places since childhood. In later years, she took great pleasure in making sure that her niece and nephews enjoyed the same experiences. Janet was always interested with the kids schooling, sports and their life. Janet worked for Shoppers Drug Mart for 35 years and retired in May 2016. Over the years she became an invaluable employee as she earned the trust and respect of all the store associates and staff. She has contributed to the sport of curling as a competitor, coach, instructor, volunteer, club president and mentor coach. Charles Wendell was born July 11, 1943, in Rochester, MN, to Wendell and Lorraine (Mathen) Bass. He married Barbara J. Schaefer on July 10, 1965, in Afton, MN. Chuck was the owner and founder of Mec-Pro Manufacturing in Winona, which he started in 1975, and where he took great pride in engineering and building customized machinery for the grain malting and fiberglass composite industries. Chuck is survived by his wife, Barbara, three sons: Matthew (Angela) Bass, Byron, MN, Michael (Charlot) Bass, Lakeville, MN, and Daniel Bass, Goodview, MN, five grandchildren: Hannah, Emily, Megan, Jennifer, and Shawn, his mother, Lorraine Bass, Rochester, MN, two sisters: Julie (David) Bass-Haugen, St. Paul, MN, and Debra (Jay) Fotland, Rochester, MN, two brothers: John (Mary Jo) Bass, Rochester, MN, and Roger Bass, Rochester, MN, and other relatives. She was born October 25, 1921, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the Reverend Daniel B. Bassett and Brownie A. Bassett. Dr. Wall attended the public schools of Winston-Salem and was an honor graduate of Winston-Salem State University. She earned a master's degree from New York University and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale). Her love and enthusiasm for teaching, which began in the classroom and continued throughout her career, led her to an assignment as an elementary school principal in Thomasville. In 1966, she joined the faculty of Winston-Salem State University. She became director of Student Teaching and proudly served in that position until her retirement in 1985. Her various honors include the award for Outstanding Teacher of Thomasville City Schools, president of the North Carolina Association of Teacher Educators, President and campus adviser for Phi Delta Kappa and the award for Excellence in Teaching at WSSU. She was also an evaluator of education programs for the State of North Carolina and for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Dr. Wall was an active supporter of her community including social organizations, the Winston-Salem State Alumni Association and Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, where she was a faithful member for over 35 years. In addition to her parents, Dr. Wall was preceded in death by her brother, Daniel B. Bassett Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 53 years, Grover C. Wall; her dear brother, Jethro B. Bassett (Vera); adoring nieces Jean B. Fenwick (Victor), Linda D. He was a self-employed decorator. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Ninette loved her church family and loved to cook for church functions. She also enjoyed thrift shopping, gardening, and interior decorating. Virginia was a godly wife and mother, she taught Sunday school for 42 years, and continued to serve the Lord through teaching a weekly Bible study at Kerner Ridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Bassett; a granddaughter, Ronda Bassett; and a great-grandson, John Curtis Bassett. Surviving are three children, Harold Wesley Bassett and wife Doris, Carolyn Wilson and husband Manuel, and Julia Brown and husband Tom; two sisters, Frances Coone and Sue Cartwright; six grandchildren, Rena Bailey, Jonathan Wilson, Ronnie Bassett, Kent Brown, Terri Youngblood, and Michael Wilson; 12 great-grandchildren and many special friends. Frances Vaughan Exum, the wife of Wyatt Patrick Exum III and the mother of Patricia Exum Bassett, died on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Exum was born in Martinsville, Va., on July 14, 1918, as the older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bunyan Charles Vaughan. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Galax, Va., where Mr. Vaughn founded Vaughan-Bassett Furniture CO. Two years later, Frances? sister, Margaret, was born. Mrs. Exum was a graduate of Chatham Hall School and Hollins College, where she majored in music. She married Lt. Wyatt Patrick Exum III, an Air Force pilot, on Oct. 25, 1941, just six weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She would spend much of the next four years living at her parents? home on Stuart Drive in Galax while Wyatt fought in World War II. Wyatt and Frances? daughter, Pat, was born n September 1942. The family lived in Galax after the war, eventually moving to their home on Country Club Lane, Wyatt was the executive vice president and sales manager at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. until his death in 1983. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., Vaughan Furniture Co. and American Mirror Co. She also served on the first building board of Twin County Memorial Hospital and Hollins College Alumnae Board. For many years, Mrs. Exum was a member of First Baptist Church of Galax, where she served as a member of the Women?s Missionary unon and as superintendent of the Primary Department Sunday school. She later joined Wyatt as a member of First United Methodist Church of Galax. Frances Exum was a lifelong musician and gardener, an avid and accomplished bridge player, a lover of literature, a gracious hostess and a proud, loving and supportive daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Vaughan; her beloved sister, Margaret Vaughan Higgins; and her husband, Wyatt Patrick Exum III. She is survived by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Bassett III, of Roaring Gap. Her grandchildren are Doug Bassett and his wife, Ellen, of Winston-Salem, Wyatt Bassett and his wife, Bartlett, of Winston-Salem and Fran Poole and her husband, Ashton, of New York City. She has nine-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, Becky Higgins Dorshorst of Tulsa, Okla, and Peggy Higgins Rhodes of Arlignton, Va. The family is extremely grateful for the loving and thoughtful care given to Mrs. Exum by Katy Finney, Patsy Holcomb and Anita Southard. He is survived by a brother, Lloyd M. Bass of Clemmons and sisters Jennifer Bass Daniel of Lexington and Stephanie Bass of Winston-Salem. He was born in Winston-Salem May 29, 1959 to John Dallas and Lois K. Bass. He graduated from Parkland High School in 1977. He and his siblings attended Southside Baptist Church while growing up. Nathan was always proud of growing up on the Southside of Winston and proud of the working families in his neighborhood. His father instilled a strong work ethic at an early age, teaching him to lay tile and giving him the workload of a man when he was still a teenager. Nathan became a skilled boilermaker and pipefitter. He believed in treating and paying workers fairly, in maintaining safe working conditions and saw effective unions as essential to those goals. Before retirement in 2022 he worked as a pipefitter journeyman for Fabco Industries at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Waynesboro, GA. He belonged to UA Local 421 for approximately 20 years before his death. In his personal life he overcame drug and alcohol addiction with the help of local 12-step recovery groups and was clean and sober from July 13, 1992 until his death-31 years. Like his father Nathan was a good cook. Wherever he lived one would spot a grill or a smoker outside his home, and especially on weekends the fragrance of well-cooked food would surround the place. A memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., December 30, 2023 at Trinity Moravian Church, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem. Cremation services are provided by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. Ashes will be placed at the family cemetery in Haws Run, NC in a private service.
