William Rowe Bass, 84, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care. Born Jan. 17, 1930, in Miami, Fla., Mr. Bass is the son of the late Julian Gordon Bass and Ethel (Rowe) Bass. He was also preceded in death by a brother, J. Gordon Bass Jr., and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Bill was a graduate of Virginia Tech, class of 1960, where he earned his electrical engineering degree. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean era. Bill was an electrical engineer for the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America and retired from B.A.S.F. Chemical Company, Anderson, S.C. He was a past member of the Kiwanis and served on the Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels in South Carolina. Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Ann Bass; his daughter, Kyler Merrick and husband, Steven, Duncansville, Pa.; and his son, Kevin Bass and wife, Carol, Accident. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James Merrick and wife, Allison, Phoenix, Ariz., Kara Ayaram and husband, David, Georgetown, Texas, Jeremy Merrick and wife, Suzie, Williamsburg, Va., Matthew Bass, Washington, DC, Scott Bass, Bethesda, and Emma Bass, Baltimore, as well as four great-grandchildren. Vicksburg Evening Post One Man is Dead in I-20 Smash-Up One Gulfport man was killed and three other people were injured in a traffic accident on Interstate 20 near Bovina about 4 p.m. Friday (October 15, 1982). The dead man was identified as William E. Bassett, 40. He was apparently stationed at the Navy's Construction Battalion Base in Gulfport. His body was taken to Fisher Funeral Home for local arrangements and was to be transferred to the Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA for services. The accident happened in the westbound lane of Interstate 20 about 3/4 of a mile west of the Bovina exit. At least three vehicles were involved, an American Motors car driven by Bassett, a laundry truck owned by the Pearl Laundry in Peark and driven by Howard Holcomb, 58, of 6300 Old Canton Road in Jackson, and a pickup driven by Cecil Anderson, 62, of 4516 Lee Road in Vicksburg. Reports indicate the possibility of additional vehicles involved. There are also indications that a vehicle was on the wrong side of the road, but has not been confirmed by officers. Coroner L.W. Callaway III said the inquest ruled that Bassett died of body and head injuries received in the accident. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mercy Regional Medical Center at 5:10 p.m. Emergency medical technicians of the Vicksburg-Warren County Amublance Service said Bassett's car was virtually disintegrated. Holcomb, Cecil Anderson and Mrs. Anderson were taken to the Mercy Medical Center by ambulance service. A hospital spokesman said Holcomb was in stable condition this morngin suffering from a broken leg. Anderson was also in stable condition with a strained neck. Mrs. Anderson was treated for bruises of the leg and released. The accident was investigated by Highway Patrolman Bob Huelett, but he was not available for details of the wreck. His body was interred October 17, 1982 in Ansley, Jackson Parish, LA, Ansley Cemetery. Ruston Daily Leader W.E. "Bill" Bassett, 40 of Ruston, died Saturday as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Vicksburg. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Ansley Union Church with the Rev. Bill Stokes officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery. He was a SW-1 U.S. Navy and was a Seabee in the Navy. He was a member of the Ansley Union Church. | 52174 | William T. Burbage, 15 Aug 19?? William T. Burbage, 75, a retired Coast Guard captain, died suddenly at his home in Ocean City Tuesday. A native of this area, Capt. Burbage served for 30 years with the U.S. Coast Guard at the Greerun, North Beach and Ocean City stations. He retired about 18 years ago. He was a member of the Atlantic Methodist Church and the Shepuxent Post of the American Legion of Ocean City. He was the son of the late Charles T. and Fanny Gardner Burbage. His wife, the former Daisey L. Bassett, died June 11. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Jamison of Ocean City; three sons, Luther Burbage of Salisbury, William T. Burbage of Ocean City, Cmdr. Charles Burbage of the U.S Navy, and a foster son, Ralph L. Bassett of Corpus Christi, Texas. Also surviving are six grandchildren and two half sisters, Mrs. Edna Brittingham and Mrs. Lulu Davis. The funeral service was held in the the Burbage Funeral home in Berlin Thursday with the Rev. Ralph Minker of the Atlantic Methodist Church and the Rev. William Dewees, rector of St. Paul's-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. The Capital, Annapolis, Maryland, 19 Oct 2006 Charles Burbage Retired Navy Capt. Charles Lee Burbage, 88, of Annapolis, and previously of Memphis, Tenn., and Ocean city, died Oct. 15 at Ginger Cove Health Center after a on-day illness. Born Feb. 28, 1918, in Berlin in Worcester County, Capt. Burbage graduated in 1935 from Ocean City High School and in 1936 from the Naval Academy Preparatory School. In 1941 he graduated from the Naval Academy where he played on the football team. In 1971 he retired after 36 years in the Navy and then worked for 10 years for the Holiday Inn Corp. in Memphis. On Dec. 7, 1941, he was on the USS Detroit during the attack on Pearl Harbor and helped to save the ship by getting underway and rescuing many who were in the harbor waters. He had a long and eventful career in the military, where he became a jet pilot and flight instructor and was assigned to Fighter Squadron 5 aboard the carrier USS Franklin. He was preparing to begin a flight off the carrier when it was bombed by the Japanese. He survived by jumping from the upper deck into the sea and swimming for several hours before being rescued by a whaling ship. Capt. Burbage was a member of the elite Golden Eagles, a club for decorated jet pilots, as well as the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Association of Naval Aviators. He enjoyed decoy carving, fishing, golf and handball and in his younger years was the Navy's national handball champion for two years. He remained a Class A-ranked handball player. On Sept. 29, 1942, he married the former Mary Teresa Niland, who died earlier this year. Surviving are two sons, Tom Burbage of Atlanta, Ga., and Jim Burbage of Naples, Fla., four daughters, Nancy Ohanian of Burke, Va., Carol Burbage of Gaithersburg, Joan Hawkins of Cordova, Ind., and Mary Lee "Mimi" Burbage of Anchorage, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was the son of the late Daisy Lee Bassett Burbage and William Thomas Burbage. KY. My Father who then had no children with him moved to Clarksburg and Brother John lived with them. John R. was married to Cynthia A. Stricklett at Clarksburg in the fall, Dec 21st of 1856 and in the spring of 1857 he came to Keithsburg, Ill where I was located practicing law and entered into a co-partnership with me and remained until 1869. In the meantime he served on term as Co. judge of Mercer Co. He then bought a farm near Aledo, Ill and moved to that and remained there until the spring of 1883 serving 5 years during that time as County Judge. He then moved to Burlingame Kansas and is now on a farm 8 miles from there. He has children living, to wit: William who is married and lives at Topeka, Kansas and is car-inspector in the shops of the A.T. and S.F.R.R. Co; Elizabeth [added later: "Green," perhaps her married name] who is unmarried, is a teacher and is now at the Rosebud Indian Agency, South Dakota. | 52180 | William Wallace Bass Collection, 1848 ? 1976 Arizona Historical Society Biographical note William Wallace Bass was born on October 2, 1848 in Shelbyville, Indiana. He came to Arizona in 1883 for his health and became one of the first settlers on the south rim of the Grand Canyon when he located a camp there in 1884. Realizing the Canyon's great tourist potential, he constructed a stage road to his camp, first from Williams, then from Ashfork, both approximately seventy miles distant. He began advertising for the tourist trade in 1885, although at this time his principal activities in the Canyon were mining and prospecting. From 1885 until 1926, when he sold his interests to the Santa Fe Land and Improvement Company, Bass played an important role in the evolution of the mining and tourist industries at the Grand Canyon. He traced and built over 140 miles of roads and more than forty miles of trails, connecting his mines, camps and scenic viewpoints. He built cisterns and dams to collect and preserve rain water and established first a boat, then a cable ferry, across the Colorado River. He was also a photographer and built a darkroom below the Canyon rim to accommodate the photographers who frequented his camp. He was instrumental in starting a school at the Grand Canyon in 1911. Bass' tourists facilities were located twenty-seven miles west of present day Grand Canyon Village. When the railroad arrived there in 1901, Bass built a house five miles from its terminus to provide an overnight stop for his guests. Later, when tourist traffic increased and drives along the rim became popular, he constructed yet another house, one mile from Grand Canyon Village, in order to make his business more competitive. William Wallace Bass was endowed with great intellectual curiosity. He was a self-taught geologist who had his own theory of how the Grand Canyon was formed. He also wrote poetry, though he was too modest to call it that, referring to his verse as "rhymes and jingles" instead. In fact, he published some of them under that very title, and, later, another book entitled, "Adventures in the Canyons of the Colorado". Bass was a good friend of the Havasupai Indians and often visited them, alone or with tourist parties. He gave them seeds and was instrumental in having a school and post office established there. He also employed some of them from time to time and interceded on their behalf in Washington. William Wallace Bass' wide ranging interests, intellectual curiosity and desire to learn were qualities unique among the early tourist operators at the Grand Canyon. He was called a "visionary" by some of his contemporaries, and, indeed, with justification. He not only foresaw some of the later developments at the Canyon but took the necessary steps to adjust to them. This was characteristic of his entire forty-two years at the Canyon. Bass realized the Canyon's tourist potential from the beginning and built his stage roads to accommodate the tourists who were sure to come with the completion of the Atlantic-Pacific Railroad, the forerunner of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. He saw the need for a spur line to the Grand Canyon and actively lobbied for its construction, chairing the first organizational meeting of the Grand canyon Railroad at the town of Williams in 1894. Although his own efforts were unsuccessful, the railroad was eventually built, reaching the Canyon twenty-seven miles east of his tourist facilities. Bass was ready; he had constructed a stage road from t he railroad to his camp. Then, as the number of visitors increased over the years, he moved his tourist operation closer and closer to the railroad terminal at Grand Canyon Village. Bass was quick to recognize the importance of the automobile and the change it would create in travel patterns; he welcomed it and the opportunity it presented to break the railroad's monopoly on travel to the Grand Canyon. He bought the first automobile for his business in 1914 and added another one later on. He lobbied for good roads and put up road signs between Ashfork and the Canyon at his own expense. Finally, as his Canyon years drew to a close, he dreamt of incorporating the airplane in his tourist business, anticipating thereby yet another development that was to change tourism at the Grand Canyon. He shouldn't, perhaps, be faulted if he did not see the problems signs, automobiles, airplanes and an ever increasing number of visitors would create half a century later. Through his Washington contracts, William Wallace Bass played an active role in the various legislative proposals affecting the Grand Canyon from the initial establishment of Grand Canyon National Park in 1919. He often did not agree with the proposals and his opposition resulted in lively correspondence with this Washington friends. He frequently carried his arguments into newspapers near and far. When the Fred Harvey organization was given the contract as the principal concessionaire at the Grand Canyon National Park, the days of the Bass tourist business were numbered. The seventy-one-year-old Bass had neither the energy, nor the resources, to compete with Fred Harvey and the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1923, he entertained his last guest and the family moved to Wickenburg, Arizona. Characteristically, the first thing Bass did there was to open a tourist camp in a grove of mesquite trees along the Hassayampa River. In 1926, he completed the sale of his Canyon holdings to the Santa Fe Land and Improvement Company. He died in Wickeburg in 1933, at the age of eighty-four. In accordance with his last request, his ashes were deposited by airplane on Bass Tomb, a prominent peak in the Canyon that commands a view of the section he explored and developed. Ada Lenore Diefendorf was born on August 29, 1867 in New York. She was a music teacher and came to Arizona to teach in Williams. She met William Wallace as a tourist to the Grand Canyon in 1894. They were married on January 5, 1895. They had four children, Edith Jane born August 22, 1896; William Guy born July 26, 1900; Hazel born October 5, 1903; and Mabelle Melba born April 25, 1905. Ada helped William W. with secretary work for the mining companies and even owned shares in some of the mines. She occasionally taught music. She wrote in her diary regularly from 1895 to 1929. She had her hands full with children, water shortages, visiting tourists, loneliness when William W. was away prospecting and touring. He then taught chemistry for four years at the Swaim Free School, and was a chemist for two years at the Newark plant of the New Jersey Zinc Company. After the American Brass Company was organized, he went to its Coe Brass branch at Torrington, Connecticut as a chemist in 1902. In 1903 he was appointed chief chemist and after 1912 was designated technical superintendent and metallurgist with that corporation. The company's headquarters were in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was a pioneer of the American brass industry. He was awarded the James Douglas gold medal of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in 1925 and was elected to the presidency of the Institute in 1930. William belonged to many organizations and received many awards during his career. He was a deacon in the Congregational Church. In politics, he was a Republican. Winner of Medal in 1925 First to Apply Spectroscope to Routine Work in the Non-Ferrous Industry Special to the New York Times WATERBURY, Conn., July 21 - William Hastings Bassett, metallurgical manager of the American Brass Company and president of the American Society for Testing Metals, died suddenly this morning at his home in Cheshire. He was 66 years old. Death was caused by embolism Mr. Bassett, a pioneer metallurgist in the brass industry, had enjoyed a nation-wide prestige for several years for his contributions to that branch of the industry. In 1925 he was awarded the James Douglas Medal for research in copper and brass and other non-ferrous metals and their alloys and for his contributions to the establishment of high standards of quality. During the World War he was a member of the committee on materials and airplane construction at Washington. He was born in New Bedford, Mass., the son of William A. and Amira D. (Mayhew) Bassett, of long-established New England ancestry. He was graduated in 1891 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1903 became chief chemist and metallurgist of the American Brass Company. From 1912 to 1930 he was technical superintendent and metallurgist, and since Jan. 1, 1930, had been metallurgical manager. He was first to apply the spectroscope to routine work in the non- ferrous metal industry and first in this country to apply the microscope to the metallography of non-ferrous metals. His contributions to this field have led to nationally accepted standardization in chemical analysis and in methods of manufacture. He is survived by his widow, Sarah H. Whiting Bassett, whom he married in 1892, one son, William Hastings Bassett Jr., and a daughter, Alice Whiting Bassett, all of Cheshire. Mr. Bassett was a director and former president (1930) of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, a member of the Americ Institute of Chemical Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers, Franklin Institute, the British Institute of Metals and Society of Chemical Industries. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of the Knights Templar. His clubs included the Engineers and Chemists of New York. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday at the Cheshire Congregational Church. History of Waterbury and the Naugatuck Valley, Connecticut William H. Bassett William H. Bassett, technical superintendent and metallurgist with the American Brass Company, has had broad experience in this line based upon thorough college training. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, March 7, 1868, a son of William A. and Almira D. (Mayhew) Bassett. The father was engaged in the wholesale and commission fish business. The son was accorded liberal educational opportunities, supplementing his public school course by study in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of Boston, from which he was graduated with the class of 1891. In so doing he followed his natural trend and he has since further developed his talen along that line, his success being based upon comprehensive study and close application. He entered upon life’s practical duties as an employee of the Pope’s Island Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of white metal and jewelers’ supplies, his position being that of chemist and metallurgist. For some time he held the position of superintendent with that company, with which he continued in active connection until 1900. He then entered the employ of the New Jersey Zinc Company and when he resigned two years later he accepted the position of chemist with the Coe Brass Manufacturing Company of Torrington. Later he received appointment to the position of chemist and metallurgist with the American Brass Company and is now occupying that place of prominence and responsibility. His duties have further been broadened in his appointment to the position of technical superintendent. The value and worth of his service, is acknowledged by all. He had become an expert in this line, his opinion being largely accepted as authority upon many importa questions relative to the profession. In 1892 Mr. Bassett was united in marriage to Miss Sarah H. Whiting, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and they have become the parents of a daughter and a son: Alice W., who attended the Quincy Mansion School and is n home; and William H., Jr. who is a student in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The family reside in Cheshire and they are members of the Congregational church there. Mr. Bassett gives his political allegiance to the republican party, while fraternally he is well known as a member of Temple Lodge, No. 16, A.F.& A.M., of Cheshire, and of St. Elmo Commandery, K.T., of Meriden. His membership extends largely to scientific societies, his name being on the roll of the American Society of Testing Materials, in which he is serving on the executive committee. He is also on the advisory committee on metals for the bureau of standards at Washington, D.C., has membership with the Americ Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Institute of Metals, the British Institute of Metals, the American Chemical Society, and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a member of the Chemists Club of New York, of the Manufacturers Club of Ansonia, of the Torrington Club and of the Waterbury Club. His death was due to a complication of diseases, including paralysis. The funeral took place this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal Church of West Fairfield, the services being in charge of the Rev. George Grant, of the Bolivar M.E. Church. Burial was made in the West Fairfield Cemetery. The pallbearers were John Murphy, John McBerney, Leonard Hofecker, Samuel McDowell, George Cummins, and Harry Hamlon. The deceased was born at Butterton, England, January 16, 1842, and was married there September 9, 1861, to Miss Emma Lomas, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett came to America in 1873 and located in Allegheny County, where they resided until 1879, when they located in Johnstown. Mr. Bassett helped build the St. Clair dam in Lower Yoder Township. After the completion of the dam Mr. Bassett helped to lay the water main from the Millcreek dam to Johnstown, his superintendant being the late James Williams. Mr. Bassett worked for the local company, which was known as the Johnstown Water & Gas Company, for a period of 25 years before removing to his farm in Westmoreland County. For a while after the Bassett family came here from Allegheny County they made their home near the St. Clair dam, later removing to a farm in Westmoreland County, where they resided before removing to West Fairfield. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1911, when many Johnstowners participated. Besides his widow, Mr. Bassett is survived by these children: Joseph H., of 195 Barron avenue; William E., of Conneaut Lake, Pa., a minister in the Erie Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church; Annie, wife of James McBerney, of near Fort End, Pittsburg; Harry, of West Taylor Township; Arthur, also of West Taylor Township, and Miss Minnie, at home. There are also 20 grandchildren. The deceased was a member of the West Fairfield Methodist Episcopal Church and was a charter member of the Ancient Order of Foresters. MRS. EMMA BASSETT, AGED 83, SUCCUMBS Deceased Was Widow of Joseph Bassett, at One Time Water Co. Foreman Mrs. Emma L. Bassett, widow of Joseph Bassett, whose health had been impaired for a long time, died this morning at the home of her son, Joseph H. Bassett, 195 Barron avenue, Eighteenth Ward, aged 83 years. Her death was due to general debility. She had been bedfast for a week. The deceased, whose maiden name was Emma Loomis, was born in England and was married there a long time ago to Joseph Bassett. The Bassett family came to Johnstown a long time ago and settled in West Taylor Township. Mr. Bassett was for a long time a gang foreman for the Johnstown Water Company. His death occurred at West Fairfield, Westmoreland County, in July, 1916. Seven children, 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren survive Mrs. Bassett. The sons and daughters are Joseph, at whose home Mrs. Bassett passed away; William pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sugar Grove in the Erie Conference; Anna, wife of James McBurney, at present in the State of Florida; Hannah, wife of Frank Lesiter, of Pittsbugy, Harry Bassett of West Taylor Township, and Mss Minnie Bassett, at home. Mrs. Bassett was a member of Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the Bassett home in Morrellville by the Rev. Thomas H.
