| 3160 | Trumpet and Universalist Magazine, Boston, Massachusetts Saturday, January 7, 1832 Rev. Alfred V. Bassett We noticed in our last the very sudden death of Rev. Alfred V. Bassett, pastor of the Universalist Society in Dedham, Mass. The following account of his death is form the Dedham Advocate, and may be relied on as correct: - ?Dreadful Death ? A more melancholy instant of suicide probably never occurred in this region, than that which it is now our painful duty to record. The Rev. Alfred V. Bassett, Pastor of the Universalist Society in this town, committed suicide on Monday night last, by cutting his throat with a razor! The following particulars, as we learn from a friend of the deceased, are substantially correct. ? Mr. Bassett had been unwell several days with the prevailing influenza, and complained of a pain in his head, from which it is supposed that a fever on the brain produced that derangement of mind which caused him to commit the fatal deed. After retiring on Monday night, he arose and extinguished the light, which had been left burning in consequence of his illness. The individual who lodged with him soon fell asleep. About 11 o?clock, being aroused by the struggles and groans of the deceased, he hastened to alarm the family, and the poor man was found lying on the floor, struggling amid the agonies which thirty minutes after, terminated in death. It appeared that he had drawn the razor on both sides of the throat, cutting very deeply on the left side. Mr. Bassett was 25 years of age, a native of Atkinson, N.H., and had been settled in this town two years. He was a young man of respectable talents, and by his amiable manners and kind disposition, had won the esteem of many, who are now calling to unite with his relatives and friends in mourning his untimely exit. The following is a brief, though just description of the amiable character of the deceased. It is extracted from the Lowell Mercury: ?Mr. Bassett resided in the family of the editor of this paper over a year, and a more amiable and upright person he never saw. It is but justice to say, that there was not one bad trait in the character of this excellent young man. We do not believe that he had even a single enemy, in the whole circle of his acquaintance. Honest, honorable, unsuspecting and confiding in regard to others, he neither thought of deceiving nor of being deceived. He was the youngest of a large family of brothers and sisters; and from that circumstance, and possessing a slender constitution, and enjoying but a poor state of health, he was decidedly the favorite of the whole family. Having been tenderly and affectionately dealt with from his childhood, we often told him that he was not well prepared to encounter the hypocrisy and intrigue, he would be likely to meet with on every public road, and in every sequestered lane he might traverse after leaving the circle of those who loved him, and had no motives of interest or ambition to deceive. Still he could not be prevailed upon to view the world as it was. He viewed it as he wished it, and as it should be rather than as it is. His views of it were rather Utopian than real. We believe this last remark to be true in regard to every fair minded generous young man; but not to th4e same extent. He was so perfectly honest and sincere in all that he said and did, that he never uttered a syllable on any subject but with the most scrupulous regard to truth, not even in the most familiar social intercourse, by way of joke. In fact he never uttered a joke, on any occasion; and if he was innocently made the subject of one, he would either preserve a complete silence, or reason on its impropriety. He enjoyed the benefit of a good academic education and studious habits; but was kept from entering and pursuing his studies at college on account of the poorness of his health. About four years since he began to prepare for the ministry; and about eighteen months since he was ordained over the society with whom he commenced, and closed his pastoral duties. His religious opinions were the result of investigation. Charitable, just and friendly towards those who differed from him, he secured their friendship and good will. Is it not then a melancholy thought that one so amiable, so upright, so beloved by all who knew him, one of the few who had a large circle of friends, without an enemy, should die so young ? and by his own hand! Yet such is the fact. He committed suicide. Of the circumstances that led to this painful result we are yet apprised. From what we knew of him, however, we have little doubt that is was form some sudden and altogether unlooked for aberration of reason that left his mind a wreck, and led to the sad deed of self immolation. He had been very unwell for several weeks previous to his melancholy exit. Owing to the bad state of his health, a young man of his acquaintance slept with him, and kept a lamp burning that he might afford him and aid he might need. About 11 o?clock on Monday night, while the young man was asleep, he rose suddenly from his bed and committed the deed, that proved fatal in the course of the next hour. A doctor was called in, but alas, there was no help. From these circumstances it would appear to have been the impulse of the moment. He has left one to whom he would probably have been united in a few months as a bosom companion, and numerous other relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death. When we take into consideration the deep and imperishable love of life that exists in the bosom of every human being, and then reflect upon the extreme and hopeless agony necessary to overcome it, whether it be the result of religious despair, of disappointed affection, or the loss of friends, or a sudden change form affluence to extreme poverty, the humane emotions of pity and sorrow for the unfortunate, struggle for the ascendance in the bosoms of the kind and the good. How ardently do friends under the melancholy circumstances wish that the secret of the fatal intention had found its way to them in time to have afforded an opportunity to bind up the broken heart, and stay the hand of despair, by restoring in the afflicted bosom, the mild sway of reason and religion. We cannot refrain from closing this obituary notice with a few lines of that excellent poet and man, Thomas Campbell ? ?On the grave of a suicide,? and from ?The pleasures of Hope.? ?Ah once we know the social passions glowed In thy devoted bosom ? and the hand That smote its kindred heart, might yet be prone To deeds of mercy. Who may understand Thy many woes, poor suicide, unknown? He who thy being gave, shall judge of these alone.? ?Mild be the doom of Heaven ? as thou wast mild? For oh! thy heart in holy mould was cast. And all thy deeds were blameless but the last.? | Bassett, Alfred Vose (I02449)

| 3178 | Valley News, West Lebanon, New Hampshire, Sunday, 12 June 2022 Carolin Barker Bassett Lebanon, NH ? Carolin Barker Bassett, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2022 at the loving and compassionate Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born Carolin Mildred Barker on January 5, 1933 in Massachusetts, daughter of Mildred (Register) and Frank Loriston Barker. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Lebanon, NH where she walked to the elementary school holding her big brother's hand. They lived across the street from the Bassett family whose son, Bob, would one day become Carolin's loving husband. The Barker family moved one more time to live in Post Mills, VT where Carolin attended high school and graduated from Thetford Academy with the class of 1951. She received her nursing diploma in 1954 from Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington and began a lifetime career in nursing that included training in new cardiac techniques with Dr. Michael DeBakey in Houston, Texas. Her years of nursing at MHMH included giving comforting late night backrubs, her favorite moments in nursing. During the move of Mary Hitchcock Hospital, Carolin rode in the last ambulance to transfer patients from the old facility to the new location in Lebanon. She told of seeing the first death and the first birth in the new hospital before her retirement. On September 23, 1967, Carolin married Robert (Bob) Bassett, that young boy who had lived nearby when her family resided in Lebanon. Carolin and Bob made their home in Lebanon for the entirety of their marriage and after Bob's passing, she continued to live there "aging in place". She and Bob enjoyed skiing, biking, hiking and traveling together and they made many lifelong friends doing both. Luke, their beautiful golden retriever, was an important member of their family. So important, in fact, that upon Luke's passing, Bob bought a stuffed "golden" puppy and lovingly sewed a slipper into its mouth as a Christmas gift to Carolin. This gift occupied a special spot in her dining room to greet all who came through. Carolin delighted in having friends and family come to dinner. She could put together the most color coordinated dinners in the Upper Valley and took great time in preparing them. A tradition Carolin and Bob carried out for many years was serving Thanksgiving dinner at the local soup kitchen. Although they had no children, their many nieces and nephews were "their kids". They both treasured time with family, teaching several of those nieces and nephews the joy of skiing, taking great nieces and nephews to summer theatrical productions and promoting occasional school skipping to go skiing for the day! Carolin's church family at the First Congregational Church in Lebanon was also very important to her. In addition to worship services, she was involved in helping with the beautiful presentation of refreshments during church occasions, taking great care to make everything special down to the linens and serving dishes, and was known for having everything "just so." She was a devoted member of the choir and deeply loved singing. In her last days, members of the choir came to sing to her at the Jack Byrne Center. Members of her family were fortunate enough to be present to witness, and be embraced by, the gift of comfort and peace they brought to her. Carolin was predeceased by her husband Bob, sister Beverly Pasch, brother Gregory Barker and brother Frank Barker and his wife Emily. She is survived by her brother John (Jack) Barker and his wife Betsy of California, her brother-in-law Bill Pasch of Florida, her sister-in-law Marsha Barker of Rutland, VT and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Trish Heatherton who became family during years of sharing time, interests, food and celebrations. Memorial services will take place during Carolin's favorite time of year in September. In the last months of her life, Carolin was touched to find so many kind and supportive people in her life. She told us she was amazed to end her life so grateful to the people around her and feeling such acceptance and peace. She hoped everyone could have that feeling. If you wish to make a donation, please do so in Carolin's name to: Visiting Nurse and Hospice for VT and NH, PO Box 881 Brattleboro, VT 05302. | Barker, Carolin (I60271)

| 3180 | Varnum Funeral Home Maryann J. Bassett March 29, 1956 ? October 1, 2021 West Brookfield - Maryann Janice Bassett passed away on October 1, 2021, at the age of 65, in her home in West Brookfield, MA. She fought a short but difficult battle against cancer, but despite the pain and complications from the illness this past year, Maryann fought bravely until the end. Maryann is survived by her husband Merlon Bassett and children, Christopher and Rachael Bassett, son in law Joshua Rivers, daughter in law Stephanie Clymer; as well as her sisters, Patricia (Harry) Gafney, Deborah (John) Suchocki, Susan (William) Yeadon, and Laurie Sattler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Maryann lived a vibrant life, full of travel, good food, nature, and creativity. A curious soul, she never stopped exploring, whether it was a new travel destination, a fresh recipe to try, or a challenging craft project to tackle. Incredibly thrifty, Maryann could never pass up a good bargain, but always knew when to treat herself. She was unabashedly herself and lived her life as she wanted it. Maryann lived her life with the spirit of ?Joie de vivre? a true enjoyment of life and all that it has to offer. She thrived in constant and consistent adventurous pursuits with her family and friends, becoming the consummate world traveler. She was born to Paul and Janet Sattler on March 29, 1956 in Holyoke, MA. After graduating from high school, Maryann attended both Holyoke Community College and UMASS Amherst to attain her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition. It was at school at HCC that she met her husband of 42 years, Merlon. From a very young age, Maryann?s horizons were expanded beyond the city limits of Holyoke. She always referenced a childhood cross country trip with her parents and sisters as her first momentous adventure to see the wonders this country has to offer. Throughout the years Maryann always fed her desire for travel and exploration at home and abroad. Merl and Maryann took the family on countless hiking trips throughout New England, countless weeks camping on Cape Cod, visits to National Parks, and their very own cross-country trip worthy of the National Lampoon's Vacation. Without fail, each year Merl and Maryann would travel to new destinations enjoying their ?empty nest? years. Their most recent trips include Rome and the Amalfi Coast of Italy, Alaska, Nova Scotia, and their fourth trip to the US Virgin Islands. Nourishment was one of Maryann?s passions, at home and at work. The word nourishment is much more appropriate than just food or nutrition, because to Maryann, food was more than just fuel for the body, it was a connection with nature, with family, and with her heritage. Her love of gardening and using fresh and wholesome ingredients to feed her family seamlessly melded with her passion for dietetics in her clinical practice. She was proud of her lifelong profession as a Registered Dietitian and worked tirelessly to help countless patients not just to live better lives, but to thrive in embracing healthful living habits. She found great joy in mentoring others in the profession and sharing her expansive knowledge and experience. Maryann was a master artisan who crafted countless creations ranging from homemade dried spices and medicinal cordials to sewing full length dresses and knitting Afghans. Each gift or item she made was carefully prepared and thought out. Maryann?s thoughtfulness and attention to detail showed in every item and gift she created. Each stood on their own and were created solely with the recipient in mind; giving gifts was her way to let others know that they were loved and in her thoughts. To her family and friends, she was sensitive and sentimental. She felt deeply and with heartfelt emotion. With her four sisters, Maryann shared not only a resemblance, but also a very special bond. She loved them deeply and shared countless trips or ?Ya-Ya?s? as they called them to many fun-loving destinations such as Las Vegas, Orlando, NYC, and Old Quebec, Canada. Attending important events in the lives of her family and friends and keeping family traditions such as Polish Wigilia were paramount in Maryann's life. Maryann was always there for her friends and family in time of need to lend an ear or a helping hand. She made time, put in the time, and enriched the lives of all around her. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 8, 2021 at 11:00am in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., in West Brookfield. There are no Calling Hours. | 3187 | Virignia-Pilot, Norfolk, Friday, March 20, 1903 A Tragedy In Tarboro Raleigh, N.C., March 16. ? A special from Tarboro, N.C., says: This morning at 9 o?clock in front of the postoffice on Main street, Dr. J.M. Baker shot Dr. H.T. Bass and inflicted what may turn out to be a fatal wound. The pistol ball went through both walls of the stomach and penetrated the liver. Two shots were fired by Dr. Baker, only one taking effect. Dr. Bass pulled out his pistol after he was shot twice but says that he does not remember whether he shot it or not. The pistol fired, but the ball went over the heads of the crowd. After the shooting Dr. Bass walked to his office and soon afterward was carried to his home. In the afternoon Drs. Southgate Leigh, of Norfolk, assisted by Dr. Moore, of Elm City, and Dr. David T. Tayloe, of Washington, performed an operation to repait the damage, but not to extract the bullet. At this hour, 8 o?clock, Dr. Bass is living, but the surgeons who were present have stated that it will be nothing short of a miracle if he recovers. The shooting of Dr. Bass was the result of bitter feeling of long standing existing between the two men. Last summer there was a difficulty on the street between the two men and Dr. Bass knocked Dr. Baker down. The troubles were brought about by criticisms of the management of the sanitarium of which Dr. Baker is the head. The matter was later heard in court and at the trial Dr. Baker was exonerated. In the court room both men drew their pistols, but friends intervened. Dr. Baker is a much smaller man than Dr. Bass, and is ten years his junior, being about 47 years old. This morning Dr. Bass attached Dr. Baker. As to exactly when an dhow the shooting occurred the statements that have been made upon the street are conflictin. Some say that the shot which may prove fatal, was fired while the two men were actually fighting, others say that Dr. Baker shot Dr. Bass after they were pulled apart. When the first shot was fired it seems that Dr. Bass had his hand on Dr. Baker?s pistol for mthe appearance of burnt powder on Dr. Bass?s hand. Dr. Baker contends that he acted in self defense. Soon after the shooting Dr. Baker gave himself up to the sheriff. By agreement of counsel he was this afternoon placed under a $5,000 bond. Both Dr. Bass and Dr. Baker are physicians of fine standing in the town and hve many friends. Later this afternoon Dr. Bass made his will. Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Friday, March 20, 1903 Dr. Bass Dies From His Wounds Raleigh, N.C., March 17. ? A special to the News and Observer from Tarboro says: Dr. H.T. Bass, who was shot here yesterday by Dr. J.M. Baker, died at his residence last night between 11 and 12 o?clock. He was on the operating table and as he began to show signs of sinking the operation was not completed. Early in the night he became unconscious and thereafter sank rapidly. The funeral took place from Calvary church this afternoon. Rev. Dr. Gamble conducting the service. The church could not contain the immense crowd that attended. The remains were interred in Calvary churchyard. Dr. J.M. Baker, who shot Dr. Bass, left here yesterday afternoon for Richmond on professional business. The coroner?s jury went to the house of the deceased and viewed the remains this morning, then adjourned until the 22d., when they will hear testimony. The preliminary hearing will be on Monday. Dr. Bass? ante-mortem statement differs in no important particulars from the report of the tragedy sent out Monday night. | Bass, Henry Turner (I50841)

| 3188 | Visalia Times-Delta and Tulare Adv-Register, August 29, 2013 Inez Morgan Bassette Inez Morgan Bassette On Friday, August 23, 2013 at 12:06 am our precious mother, grandmother and friend passed into the loving arms of her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Inez Finch Morgan Bassette was born February 19, 1934 in McClain County, Oklahoma to parents Roy Lee Finch and Ola Mae Gunter Finch. She is survived by brother Lloyd Leon Finch and sister Lois Finch of Oklahoma; children Angie Carter (Hal), Jan Kennedy of Visalia, and Patricia Redwine (David) of Tulare; stepson Steve Prendergast (Yvonne) of Oakhurst; stepdaughter Linda Pearce of Fresno; 13 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 26 step-great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Inez was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy, Jr. Finch, Ricky Dale Finch and Troy Lee Finch. Mom was raised in Oklahoma and graduated from Washington High School in Washington, Oklahoma. In 1954 mom traveled by bus to Stockton, California to live with her sister, Lois. Being pregnant in those days was a hardship if you weren't married, so she and baby girl Angie shared their life together until she met Robert Morgan. They were married in 1956 and had two other daughters, Jan and Patty. They made their home in Stockton for a few years before moving to Visalia permanently. Mom worked very hard all her life to support her family the best she could. Inez worked at Josten's and retired from Moore Business Forms. A year after Robert died, Inez and Angie decided to search for her biological father. They found Holmes E. Bassette in Gordon, Georgia, and after a brief visit by mom and Angie, Inez and Holmes married. They lived in Georgia for several years until Holmes passed away and she returned to Visalia. When Inez could no longer care for herself, she was cared for by her daughter Angie for nearly three years until her death. Mom will be missed by all of us. Being the sweetest woman you could have ever meet, she could stand her ground if the need arose! She was the best mother ever to live! There will be an emptiness in our lives but not our hearts, for she will live there with precious memories forever. Her family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Optimal Hospice of Visalia for the loving care they provided to Inez.
