| 3122 | Thompson Funeral Home ? Lexington ? 30 March 2024 Dorothy Belch Bass Dorothy "Mama" Bass, age 103, passed peacefully on to her heavenly home with family by her side on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at her residence of six years, Legacy of Lexington. She was born on December 9, 1920, in Fairmont, North Carolina. She was the third child welcomed by Alonzo Eli Belch and Rose Eva Mays Belch. When she was a young child, the family moved to Cayce, South Carolina, where she resided for most of her life. She had seven siblings, all of whom predeceased her. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Cayce (now Mill City Church), where she was an active, faithful member participating in the ministries of the church. She had many friends among her church family whom she enjoyed. She was an integral part of the church helping with things like Sunday School and the decorating committee, but she is mostly known for her cooking. Her gift for cooking from the heart invariably comes up in any conversation about Mama Bass. Family favorites include homemade biscuits, chicken and dumplings, pound cake and carrot cake. However, the most requested dish is macaroni and cheese. She kept ingredients on hand to make it for any church funeral or occasion. Her home and table were open for family and friends to visit anytime, but especially Sunday dinner. She graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School and soon after married Henry Bass in November of 1937. She worked in business for over 25 years, while raising a family of five children. She has been a pillar of strength and faith and will be remembered as the matriarch of the Bass family. She was celebrated with five generations in attendance at her 103 birthday party in December of 2023. She stayed involved in the lives of her family members, remembering birthdays, events, and asking about their daily lives up until her last day. She found joy in her family and took pride in their accomplishments. Dot loved to travel and planned a special trip each year with a family member or friend. She enjoyed many bus tours. She took pride in having visited all 50 states, with Hawaii being the last state in her 80 year. She had a lifetime love of reading. Later in life, she received treatment for wet macular degeneration, but enjoyed reading large print books provided by the Lexington County Circulating Library. She also enjoyed watching University of South Carolina baseball, or her favorite, the Atlanta Braves. She made many friends at Legacy of Lexington and enjoyed the group activities, especially BINGO. | 3129 | Times-Picayune, New Orleans, LA, Saturday, Augustr 30, 1975 Dr. Bass, Retired Dean, Dies Dr. Charles C. Bass, emeritus dean of Tulane University?s School of Medicine, died Friday at his home. He was 100. Private funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at House of BUltman, 3328 St. Charles Ave. with The Rev. John Stone Jenkins, rectgor of Trinity Episcopal Chruch, officiating. Interment will be in the Metairie Cemetery. Dr. Bass, famous for his studies of micro-organisms causing hookworm and malaria and as the ?father of preventive dentistry,? graduated from Tulane School of Medicine in 1899. He returned to his native Mississippi to practice for five years in Columbia, where he earned fame diagnosing and demonstrating treatments for hookworm, which affected 80 per cent of the children in Marion County. In 1904, Dr. Bass was appointed to the teaching staff of Tulane?s medical school, where he became the first scientist to cultivate a malaria organism in a test trube, and in 1922, Dr. Bass was appointed dean of the school, a position which he held until his retirement in 1940. During his tenure as dean, Dr. Bass guided the medical school through rapid expansions in number of students, faculty memebers, and facilities. Hutchinson Memorial Building, which houses many of the medical school?s current operations, was erected during this time. Following his retirement, Dr. Bass pursued the study of dental disease as a second career. He designed and promoted an effective method of personal oral hygiene used today by dentists throughout the world and which is considered one of his most important contributions to medical science. Through studying the micro-organisms that combine with saliva to form plaque and cause tooth decay. Dr. Bass concluded that removed of these micro-ogranisms daily would virtually eliminate any dentail disease. To thie end, he established the use of dental floss and the proper use of the toothbrush in what dentists came to call ?the dental floss era?. In citing Dr. Bass? contributions to the field of medicine, his former student, Dr. George E. Burch, emeritus professor of medicine at Tulane and former chairman of the department tof medicine, said that ?Dr. Bass was a man of absolute integrity whose judgements were always based on logic and whose academic attitudes and pursuit of knowledge were devoted to the welfare of Tulane and to tis School of Medicine. ?Dr Bass originated the idea of clinical laboratories in the United States, having served as author of a book on laboratory techniques. Also through his efforts, the Department of Medicine at the medical school became the first in the world to have a section devoted to dental health and hygiene,? said Dr. Burch. He further stated that Dr. Bass? professional attainments brought international recognition to him and to the university. Dr. Bass, a former president of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Tropical Medicine, and the Southern Medical Association, was a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree by the University of Cincinnati in 1920 and an honorary doctor of laws degree by Duke University in 1937. Dr. Bass, husband of the late Mrs. Carolina Howell Bass and father of the late Charles C. Bass Jr. is survived by a sister, Mrs. U.D. Hoey of Lumberton, Miss.; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Trumbo of Fayetteville, Ark., Mrs. James W. Hopkins and Miss Corinne Bass, both of New Orleans; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Private practice and especially private laboratory work in addition to his college teaching occupied Dr. Bass during his first years in New Orleans, but for the last five or six years he has devoted al lhis time to instruction and research. Several important discoveries which haver contgributed to the advancement of medical knowledge have resulted from Dr. Bass? extensive delving into scientific fields. His most outstanding single achievement has been the successful cultivation of the malaria plasmodium or germ. This was recognized and confirmed in every civilized country in the world. The American Medical Assocation is now in session oat Minneapolis. The medal which Dr. Bass received is one of the greatest honors which can be bestowed upon a member of the medical prefession. It is the first time that it has ever been awarded to an Orleanian, and consequently great credit redounds indrectoy to the Tulane school of tropical medicine. Dr. Bass? work, which earned him the medal, was the cultivation of the malaria parasite while on an expedition in Central and South America, in the interests of the school of tropical medicine. Following the announcement of his achievement, the work was regarded as invaluable contribution to the knowledge of malaria, but it was hardly anticipated that the American Medical Association would see fit to grace him with its medal. Dr. Reighton Wellman, dean of the school of tropical medicine, yesterday was the recipient of scores of congratulatory telegram sfrom all parts of the country for the signal honor paid his department through Dr. Bass? work. Dr. Bass, who is now in Minneapolis, will to-day hold an exhibition before the entire American Medical Association convention dealing with the researches concerning beri-beri as conducted in the laboratories of the school of tropical medicine by Dr. Wellman and himself. Their researches have extended over many months and fowls placed on different diets, have been employed in detgermining the effect of various foodstuffs in producing beri-beri. | 3133 | Times-Standard, Eureka, California, Tuesday, May 22, 2007 Louise Annette Ivey Louise Annette Ivey In the small town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, on August 14, 1937, Louise Annette Bessette was born as the youngest child to Winfrid Joseph Bessette and Antonia Blanche Beauregard in their family of 9 children. Louise was raised in a French speaking household, and attended an all girl's Catholic school where she learned to speak English. After graduating high school Louise worked for the new company of IBM. On November 1, 1958, Louise married Daniel Lee Ivey in a small ceremony in South Burlington, Vermont, on Ethan Allen Air Force Base. They spent the next 6 years in the Cape Cod area while Daniel was enlisted in the Air Force. During this time they had 6 children. In 1966 the family moved to California, ultimately Louise and her children moved to Eureka to be near her parents and 2 of her brothers. Louise spent the next several years working as a waitress with the majority of those at Sambo's Restaurant. In 1974 she relocated to the Southern Humboldt area. Louise ran the Road Runner café in Phillipsville until 1976. In the spring of 1976 Louise and her dear friend Donna Trout hiked 12 miles into the Trinity Alps to reach a gold claim in the Pony Creek area where they camped for 14 days. She often told this story and felt her journey up the mountain was a life changing experience and a true accomplishment of inner strength. From 1976 to 1983 Louise worked at various local businesses in the area until her good friend Wanda Chadbourne convinced her to become a school bus driver in 1984. Louise's career as a school bus driver for Southern Humboldt Unified Schools ended with her retirement in 2001. During the 17 years she spent driving buses along the scenic roads of Southern Humboldt, she developed lifelong friends in many of her co workers. The students whose lives she touched throughout her years as a school bus driver were cherished by her and the focal point of the stories and yarns she told until just a few short weeks ago. Louise loved to laugh, and loved to make those around her laugh too. She managed to do this by sharing her life experiences in a way that allowed you to laugh through your tears, or laugh until you cried. She was a brave lady and one who never looked at her accomplishments as anything more than just doing what needed to be done. She is survived by her six children: D'Ann Teasley of Weott and husband Greg, Donna Anderson of Myers Flat and husband Dave, Dan Ivey of San Luis Obispo, Denyse Bandettini of Reno, Nevada, and husband Neil, Dina Ivey of Garberville, David Ivey of Cloverdale and wife Pam; grandchildren, Erica Cherry of Fortuna, Leah Nunes of Lakeport and husband Derek, Shawn Cherry of Redway, Alyssa Ivey of Fortuna, Jenna and Kelsey Hartzell of Garberville, Kaitlyn and Kylee Teasley of Weott. Louise is also survived by her brother, Leo Bessette; sister, Rita Miller; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Roger, Larry, Norman, John; and sisters, Jet and Colombe. In the early morning hours on May 18, 2007, Louise Ivey peacefully and courageously left those she loved behind to step into the world of God and become reunited with her parents, brothers and sisters. During the last months of her life she talked often of her satisfaction with her life, and all that she had done. Louise died the way that she lived; surrounded by her children, with bravery, comfort, love and the peaceful knowledge that came from her conviction in having lived well and laughed long. A special Thanks to Susan Olsen of Miranda for without her help, love and support we could not have fulfilled Louise's wish to be taken home for her remaining time with us. | 3138 | Tom Bass: Legendary Horse Whisperer A great mystery of this world is why the name of Thom Bass is so little known today. His achievements in the realm of horse training and equestrian arts might be disbelieved in our car-crazy world, had not so many famous and respected individuals witnessed and testified to them as they occurred. Nevertheless, Tom Bass?s achievements are nothing short of legendary ? he truly was the horse whisperer of his day. He could take a violent angry horse sentenced to slaughter and train the animal to accept a saddle and rider without ever using a whip. More than any other man, he changed the way horses were treated all over the world. That alone would make him worthy of his legend, but with the same air of confidence and dignity with which he won so many hourse shows, Tom Bass greatly advanced the position of racial minorities in America after the Civil War. never violent or confrontational with either horses or men, Tom Bass was the first to cross numerous color barriers in America, which he accomplished merely by being himself. Tom Bass was born a slave near Columbia, Missouri, on January 5, 1859. His mother was the slave Cornelia Gray; his father, her master, was William Hayden Bass, son of the wealthy plantation owner Eli Bass. As was common in that time and place, Tom?s father never denied his slave son?s paternity, but neither did he grant him status above any other slave. While Cornelia was pregnant with Tom, William Hayden Bass married his fiancée, Irene Hickman. Cornelia then became Irene?s lady?s maid. Cornelia had no other children by William; Irene bore William one daughter and seven sons. As a young child, Tom remained a slave until he was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The Civil War upset the fortunes of a great many white men and owmen in Little Dixie, as that part of north central Missouri was known back then. Eli Bass saw his slaves freed against hi will, lost a considerable part of his wealth and died, some say, a broken man. By all accounts, William Hayden Bass managed his share of what was left of the family property well and moved into business ventures in the city of Columbia, where he continued to prosper. Once freed, Cornelia sought employment in Columbia, but Tom and his maternal grandparents who raised him continued to work after the Civil War on another Bass family estate. Tom?s maternal grandfather, Presley Gray, had been freed before the war, and appears to have enjoyed more than a little respect in the community. Tom often cited advice his grandfather gave him, when sharing his own modestly expressed sensible opinions on both horses and men. Find-a-Grave He was a professional horse trainer. He was born a slave in 1859 in Columbia, Missouri, but moved to Mexico, Missouri after the Civil War, where he found work as a stable boy. Bass eventually became a trainer and established a reputation for training even the most wild, violent horses. Credited as a founder of the American Royal Horse Show. For a half century, Bass trained thousands of horses to prance, bow, curtsy, dance, do the cakewalk and dozens of other tricks. He invented (but refused to patent) a special bit that is still in use today to ease the pain that horse endured during training. Bass performed before U.S. Presidents Coolidge, Cleveland, McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Taft. He was also honored by Queen Marie of Rumania at the St. Louis Horse Show. During his career, he won competitions at every horse show in the country, earned more than 2,000 blue ribbons and won championships at two worldâ??s fairs. For many years, he was the only African-American to exhibit at the American Royal Horse Show, where audiences remembered him as the high-hatted rider of Belle Beach, his most famous mare. There is a museum for Tom Bass in Mexico, Missouri, not far from the cemetery. | Bass, Tom (I26)

| 3146 | Traditions Funeral and Cremation Services Guy Leonard Bass III May 2, 1949 ? November 7, 2022 Guy Leonard Berry, III, of Sapulpa, was born the second of four children to Guy L. Berry, Jr. and Barbara Bass Berry on May 2, 1949 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He died peacefully in his home on November 7th, 2022, at the age of 73. Guy?s foremost role was that of a dedicated father and husband. Professionally, he was a respected banker, a visionary leader in the economic development and transportation realms of Oklahoma, and a tireless community servant for Sapulpa and Creek County. Guy had a profound impact on the quality of life in Sapulpa and the greater Tulsa area. Locally, Guy was involved with two City annexations, a plethora of bond issues and beautification projects, economic development initiatives, and street improvements. He maintained a close relationship with the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce and its directors, acting as its Board President in 1989, helping found and chair its Pride in Sapulpa Committee, and chairing its transportation committee. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1999. Guy helped spearhead the effort to raise over $2 million dollars to construct Sapulpa?s first public swimming pool in over 50 years, resulting in the Sapulpa Aquatic Center at Liberty Park. It didn?t sit well with him that local kids, many alone in the summer, didn?t have a place to go or anything healthy to do nearby. Guy was instrumental in facilitating the development of the Polson Industrial Park, a 150-acre hub of industry near the Town West area, that has helped rejuvenate the area. Guy developed a residential redevelopment program with the bank that partnered with property owners to demolish derelict homes and buildings. It?s estimated that over 250 deteriorated properties were eliminated through this program?a huge source of pride for him. Guy was passionately involved in the state?s transportation projects, and was appointed a Highway Commissioner for the Tulsa area by Governor Frank Keating. He served in this role for many years, completing a multitude of projects that will benefit Oklahomans for decades to come, including the Creek Turnpike, the reconstruction and widening of I-44, the Gilcrease Expressway expansion and bridge over the Arkansas River, the completion of 81st Street in Sapulpa from Highway 66 to Highway 97, and many, many others. He was later appointed to the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority by Governor Mary Fallin. Guy was honored to be a member of the Board of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, a rare affiliation for one residing in Creek County, and one that he treasured. Guy had a unique gift for galvanizing the people and resources needed to see a project through to its fruition. Put simply, he got stuff done, and almost always in a behind-the-scenes capacity. A deep sense of duty and fairness drove him, rather than a desire for accolades or recognition. He didn?t take his commitments lightly and didn?t shirk his duties. He was a present and vocal participant in anything in which he was involved. Guy traveled extensively, both globally and on U.S. soil, and lived in many places, but was most proud to call himself a Sapulpan. He knew he was blessed to call Oklahoma home and to live the life he did. Guy enjoyed an active and idyllic childhood with his brothers Bob and Bill and little sister Missy, their numerous Sewell, Jennings, Berry, and Bass cousins, and a cohort of close friends and neighbors. He attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, following in his father?s footsteps. Upon graduating in 1967, he migrated back south to Norman, Oklahoma, to earn an Economics degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1971. During his time at OU, he was an active member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Army ROTC. He met friends with whom he would retain a friendship for the rest of his life among those at Culver and at the Beta house. Guy continued his Army involvement after college in Indianapolis, later moving to Washington D.C., where he worked for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. In 1972 he arrived in Dallas (coinciding with the arrival of the Washington Senators major league baseball team), where he spent 5 years as a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve. This experience both solidified his love of the Texas Rangers and his disdain of working for the government. In 1977, having made his way home and started a bank auditing firm, Guy met OU doctoral candidate Dianne Elizabeth Dennehy. The two wed in 1978 and had daughter Elizabeth Helene Berry in 1981. When Dianne died in a car accident in 1993, Guy unhesitatingly transitioned into the role of a dedicated, single dad. Guy began his tenure in the family business at American Heritage Bank (then American National Bank) in 1980, replacing his father as its President and becoming Vice-Chair of its Board when Guy, Jr. succumbed to cancer. Guy took the utmost pride in being a third-generation community banker. Under his and his brother Bill?s leadership the bank grew and thrived, surviving Oklahoma?s tumultuous oil and gas era of the 1980s and coming out the other side stronger than before. It remains a strong, respected institution, now the 12th largest and one of the oldest family-owned banks in Oklahoma. This is in part due to Guy?s industry experience, business acumen, adept judgment of character, keen analytical abilities, reputation, vision, and impeccable code of ethics. In the summer of 1999, on a flight from Chicago to Tulsa, Guy chose an empty seat next to Caroline Celen. Their mid-air conversation evolved into a courtship and they married in June of 2001. Their beloved son Henry was born in January of 2003, perpetually brightening the lives of his parents, sister, and grandparents. Guy was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and an Elder. He had a deep faith in God and was compelled to act from a place of integrity. His family is exceptionally proud and grateful to have had him as their father and husband. We know that when he met his maker and was reunited with those who went before him, he was told ?job well done.? Now, may he rest. Guy was preceded in death by his father, Guy L. Berry, Jr., his mother, Barbara Bass Berry, and his wife, Dianne Dennehy Berry. Guy is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Caroline Celen Berry, son Henry Winston Celen Berry, daughter Elizabeth Berry Thompson (Michael), granddaughter Vivienne Dianne Etta Thompson, brother Robert Bass Berry, brother William Lloyd Berry, sister Melissa Berry Simmons, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues across the country. He truly was ?unforgettable? and will be deeply missed by those he has left behind. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Sapulpa at 3 p.m. on Friday, November 18th, 2022. Arrangements are under the direction of Traditions Funeral and Cremation Services, 35 S. Main, Kellyville, Oklahoma, 918-247-7373. | Berry, Guy Leonard III (I52)
