Found Dead
Thos. E. Bass, a Resident of Rosedale, the Victim of Heart Disease

A man named Thos. Bass, whose home was in southeast part of Rosedale, met his death by heart disease on the farm of Samuel Fox, about three miles southeast of Wellington, early yesterday afternoon. He had a wagon and team and drove out to get a load of straw, following the example of a number of persons who are in the habit of buying straw, hauling it into town and selling it again on the street at and advanced price. Mr. Fox showed him the straw and left him to load it on the wagon, while he cut some corn some distance away. About half an hour afterward he spoke to Bass across the field and after speaking several times and receiving no reply, went over to the straw stack and found Bass lying down near it. An examination revealed the fact that he was dead and had evidently died of heart disease.
Mr. Fox came to town and the county attorney, C.J. Garver, was notified. He did not think it necessary that an inquest should be held on the body of the deceased, the cost being considerable and there being no evidence to show that it was other than a case of failure of the heart to perform its functions. An undertaker went out and brought in the body, which was taken to his late home.
When Bass was left by Mr. Fox he was engaged in forking the straw from the outside of an old stack, to throw away the straw which had been spoiled by exposure to the weather. He had cleared away, also, a place to drive his team close to the stack, and his body was found on this cleared space, the pitchfork under him, his face resting on the ground. He had not loaded any of the straw.
He was about 51 years old and leaves a wife and four children, the oldest child being about twelve years of age and the youngest but three months.
The funeral service was held in the Christian church at 3 o?clock this afternoon, Elder Martin preaching the sermon, interment being made in Prairie Lawn cemetery.

Marguerite Stephanie Welch Bass (Picture included)
1934 ? 2019 Long Beach

Marguerite Stephanie Welch Bass, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

Stephanie was born August 5, 1934 in Laurel, Mississippi to Robert Brewer "Boley" Welch and Marguerite Stephens Welch, who preceded her in death. She has also been preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert Earl "Bobby" Bass, Sr., her sister, Nancy Welch Spayde, brother, James William "Bill" Welch, sister-in-law, Norma Reinike "Pum" Welch, brother-in-law, Phillip Joseph "JP" Bass, and sister-in-law, Norma Randolph Bass. She is survived by her five sons, Robert Jr. (Becky), David (Joretta), John (Sharon), Steve (Susan), and Jim; grandchildren, Robert III (Laura), Stephanie (Robert), Brent (Rye-Leigh), Phillip, Kyle, Tanner, Derek, and Ryan (Jenna); and great-grandchildren Ella, Dallas, Charlotte, Nolan, Autumn, and Sawyer; grandpup Libby, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Stephanie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her world centered around her family and she adopted a very broad definition of the term throughout her life, adding many more "sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters" along the way. Stephanie thoroughly enjoyed people and anyone entering her world was assured of a deep and devoted relationship. She was a caregiver to many people, often taking shut-in friends and relatives on shopping outings or rides for the pleasure of their company. She was a shark-like bridge player who attained Life Master status over 20 years ago. The game was a true outlet for her, allowing her to meet many new friends and exercise her keen mind. Stephanie was the unofficial historian of the family, remembering people, dates, and birthdates without any reference to notes.

She retired from Lamar Advertising as Office Manager in the company's Gulfport office in 1996, starting with the company when it was Crawford Advertising, owned by the Shannon Waller family. In retirement, she and Bobby travelled through most of the United States and to many parts of Canada, and they were able to take a very memorable trip to Ireland as well.

Stephanie was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach for over 60 years. She became a Catholic as a convert in her 20s, and while she understood God is not Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, or any other particular religion, she found her pathway to God and Jesus Christ through her Catholic faith. She was an optimist, a mother confessor, and a wonderful, kind, gracious person covered with strength and dignity. She will be missed.

Her family would like to thank the many caregivers who made final months of her life so much more comfortable, Pam Fortner, Christi Cuevas, Tammie Ladner, Doug Bozlee, and Cindy Reeder of Deaconess Home Health and Shannon Shorey and Regina of Deaconess Hospice Care, and the physicians, nurses, and technicians of Memorial Hospital, including Dr. Allison Wall, Dr. Stephanie Fusell, Dr. Azar, nurses Julie, Haley, Christina, Elise, Jamie, Tamara, Amanda, and April, and technicians Millie, Tykina, and Reva.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 20, 2019, from 10 am ? 12 noon at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 E Beach Blvd, Long Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon in the church. She will be buried in Long Beach Cemetery alongside her husband.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor with the American Cancer Society.

The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Long Beach, is serving the family and an online guestbook may be signed and condolences offered at www.reimanfamily.com.

Wellington Times, Monday, March 9, 1936
Obituary
Ald. Thomas Ernest Bassett

The death of Ald. Thomas Ernest Bassett, which took place at about noon on Thursday last at a private hospital in Chatswood, although not altogether unexpected, caused quite a shock to his legion of friends throughout the west. The late Mr. Bassett, who was born in the Madgee district 56 years ago, came to Wellington about 22 years ago, and opened up in business as tobacconist and billiard saloon which premises he occupied up to the time he went away from here about five weeks ago.
Prior to that time none of his friends thought that there was anything wrong with him, as he looked a fresh and healthy man. However, his complaint struck him very quickly and he was given three months leave of absence from the Municipal Council. That was really the first intimation that there was anything seriously wrong with him. He left Wellington and saw a specialist, and then entered a private hospital at North Sydney. From the time of his entry it was found that it was a hopeless case, and he soon grew week from the malady he was suffering from, and which was sapping his strength away each day, and the bews that was received in Wellington was not at all encouraging. His family were summoned to his bedside, and all were present when death took place at the hour stated, thus ending the suffering which he had gone through for the past few weeks.
Tom, as we was familiarly known to his legion of friends in the West, for he had visited every nook and corner of it, had followed the occupation of bookmaker, and he fielded on every course in the west, where he was held in the highest regard for his honesty and integrity. His cheerful disposition and cheery smile made him a great favorite in his calling as a bookmaker. He not only took a keen interest in racing, but in all kinds of outdoor sport he was prominent.
For years he closely associated himself with cricket, and was responsible for getting together various teams which took part in the competitions, often filling a vacant place himself in the team if anyone was absent. It was the same with League football. In the old days when the games were played on the old Junction Park he took a very keen interest in the code and was always ready to assist the game in any way he could. He was also closely associated with the Wellington Bowling Club, of which he has been a member for many years. He was always regarded as a good player, and took part in many of the A grade pennant games for a number of years. The flag at the Club House was flow at half-mast when the news of his death was received here.
He was also a good public spirited man, ever ready to help the xxx along whenever he had the opportunity. At the last general election of aldermen he was one of the only batch to gain the favour of the ratepayers, and during his stay in the Council he was always fearless yet outspoken in his remarks, his idea being to do the best for the whole of the ratepayers,, and it was through his energies? that the present traffic and parking regulations were enforced in this town.
By the death of Mr. Bassett the town has lost a fine citizen and his wife and children a devoted husband and father, and the sympathy of all will go out to them in their great sorrow.
He was twice married, the children by his first wife being Ella (Mrs. Clive Rotton), Wellington, Essie (Mrs. Leeg) Sydney, Misses Mavis and Joyce, both of Wellington, Vivian (Tom), William and Neville, all of Wellington, his second wife survives him, together with a three year old son Paul.
A Requiem Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Delours Church, Chatswood, on Friday morning, and later on the body was laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the Southern Suburbs Cemetery.

A.W.I. To ?Restore? Business?

Private William Ernest Bassett, 32, who was charged at the court-martial yesterday with desertion, from February 27, 1943 to December 27, said he owned a business engaged solely in making tents and canvas equipment for the Army and when he had been called up in August, 1942, he had been given only one day?s notice to adjust his business. The business, which employed 40 people during his period in the Army was practically in chaos. After going a.w.l. and restoring the business he had postponed returning from time to time.
The president of the court-martial said that, while not announcing its decision, the Court intended to recommend that Bassett?s story be investigated. If it was found that he was an essential technician engaged in defense contracts, consideration of his discharge from the Army and a remission of his sentence would be recommended.

Parley Bassett
Death of an Old and Respected Resident of Syracuse

Word reached the city last night of the death of Parley Bassett, who was, at the time of his death, at the residence of Stanley Bagg, on the Alvord road, north of the city. Mr. Bassett?s death occurred at 7:30 o?clock last evening. He had been sick since Monday, suffering at first from a severe cold and being prostrated afterward by an attack of eyrsipelas. Prior to Monday of this week Mr. Bassett had been in good health and, although nearly 89 years of age, had no premonitory symptoms of the disease which suddenly ended his life.
Mr. Bassett was New Englander, his boyhood home being in Dalton, Mass., where he was born July 6, 1796. About fifty-two years ago he came to this city, where his home has since been. After the opening of the Syracuse & Oswego railroad he was employed by that company in the capacity of freight agent. For many years his home was in Fayette street, in the Seventh ward, and in 1863, when Daniel Bookstaver was mayor, he represented that ward in the Board of Alderman. he also served for a time in the office of city treasurer.
Few men had a wider acquaintance with his townsmen than did Mr. Bassett, especially during the active years of his life. He was a gentleman who made friends readily and who attached to himself all who came into business or social relations with him. All respected him and his unquestioned probity was recognized wherever he was known. In the prime of life he was a man of great energy in business affairs, and when he grew to be a hale old gentleman his neighbors regarded him with a sentiment akin to affections. During all his life Mr. Bassett was an ardent Democrat. He was a member of the Unitarian church from the time when that denomination established itself in this city.
Mr. Bassett?s venerable wife died a few months ago. His children are Mrs. Dr. Bartlett of Meridian, Mrs. Stanley Bagg and Mrs. Robert H. Davis of this city.

Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Bass, relict of the late Sterling Bass, senr., of Russell county, Ala., departed this life in Glennville, Barbour county, Ala, on the 4th inst., of bronchial affection, in the 76 year of her age.
For months she had suffered under a severe and protracted attack of Dysentery, which she bore with Christian fortitude. From this she recovered ? but hope how illusive! ? a lurking disease of yeas, a bronchial affection, supervened, which, aggravated by debility from long suffering, baffled the skill pf physicians, the kindest and most assiduous filial care and nursing.. She retained full possession of her mental faculties up to the last moment o her life, when blessed by the presence of all her loving children, and consoled with an unshaken hope of her acceptance with God, ?she fell asleep in Christ.?
The deceased was born in North Carolina in 1780, and marrying her late husband in 1805, removed, with him, in that year to Georgia. In 1818, they both joi8n8ed the Methodist Episcopal Church, and faithfully persevered to the end. As a wife, she was ever even tempered, kind, and devoted; as a mother, he heart expanded co-extensively with the welfare and happiness of her children, and by her affection and devotion to them, she made her home a place of peace, joy and Gladness; as a neighbor she was universally beloved; and as a Christian, from 1818 to her death, she knew no variablelness, or change in her faith and hope, but walked humbly before God, obeying His law, all her days, until it pleased Him to take her home.
It is mete briefly to notice the rare merit, the social worth, and Christian piety, of the truly good on earth. ? Their lives and examples live after them, and become rekindled in the hearts of the pure.
And the deceased justly ranked among that chosen few, who combine in their own persons, all the rare and good qualities usually distributed among many. The loss of one so pure and kind, so upright and pious, has left a void in the circle of her family, friends, kindred and society. ? She has gone to her reward, and whilst no storied urn, no monumental inscription, no elegiac verse will record her virtues, they will live inscribed on the memory and enshrined in the hearts of her friends and kindred.

Robert ?Bob? Bassitt
1933-2021
Refinery worker helped maintain parks, wetlands

Robert "Bob" Bassitt, a longtime Oregon refinery employee and a versatile community volunteer, died Thursday in his Northwood home. He was 88.

The family did not report the cause of death.

Mr. Bassitt retired in 1991 after 35 years with what now is BP-Husky Toledo Refinery in Oregon, most recently as a process supervisor.

In retirement, he worked part-time helping maintain Pearson Metropark in Oregon for a few years until retiring permanently in the late-1990s to focus on his grandchildren, Michael Bassitt, his son, said.

The elder Mr. Bassitt also volunteered in a similar role at Middlegrounds Metropark near downtown Toledo from 2015 to 2018, when he stopped for health reasons.

His son said Mr. Bassitt centered his life on his children and grandchildren, some of whom followed in his steps as athletes and as refinery employees.

"I think of him as a good-natured father and a hard worker who was extremely supportive of his family," Michael Bassitt said. "And he loved to share his love of nature with others through the many volunteer projects that he led."

Mr. Bassitt especially enjoyed helping preserve wetland areas, including those at Nature Trails Park in Northwood, which he was instrumental in designating. He also wrote proposals for grants to fund their preservation, his son said.

Additionally, he planted at least 80 evergreens around a pond near Curtice Road and I-280 in the mid-1990s as a volunteer for the city of Northwood.

In the mid-to-late 1990s, he was involved with a group that helped reintroduce the gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park.

From about 2005 to 2010, he was a support volunteer at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, talking to residents one-on-one. He also volunteered for the Northwood Local Schools when his children went there from the early-1970s through the mid-1980s.

In part, he spearheaded the installation of lights at the Northwood High School football stadium about 1975, which allowed the school to host night games. He was also active in the school district's athletic boosters.

Mr. Bassitt was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Lima, Ohio, to Mary and Robert Bassitt, the oldest of seven children.

He was a 1951 graduate of Lima Central High School, where he played varsity football and baseball, then went on to play football for the University of Kentucky. Mr. Bassitt played there for two years when legendary University of Alabama Head Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant was UK's head coach from 1946 to 1953.

Mr. Bassitt left college as a sophomore in order to support his family when his mother died unexpectedly. He went back home to work at what was then the Standard Oil Co. refinery in Oregon.

About 1957, he married Cora Jayne Teegardin. They raised three children together. She died in 2019.

Over the years in his free time, he liked to be with his family, especially visiting his children's and grandchildren's athletic events, and traveling. He also raised wild turkeys for several years in the 1970s.

Mr. Bassitt was a member of the Christ Dunberger American Legion Post 537 in Oregon, where he served on the color guard and as the post historian. He also was active in the Pheasants Forever nature group in Toledo in the 1980s.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers.

Surviving are his sons, John and Michael Bassitt; daughter, Julie Tucholski; sisters, Carol Williams, Linda Derth, Pat Miller, and Mary Gerdeman; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd., Oregon, where funeral services will immediately follow.

The family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the American Legion post.
