Wiley began his career at Fred Garlands Nursery in the early 1940's, later becoming a self-employed landscaper, working in all phases of the industry. Wiley drove a truck for Service-us Bakery for several years, before returning to his love of plants and opening the Wiley Bass Nursery and Greenhouse in Britton, Oklahoma. With his wife, Juanita at his side, he began to build his small business, and as it grew, he enlisted help from family members, first a nephew, Jon Bass, then followed by nephew, David Bass. His daughter Beverly joined him in 1979, followed by her two sons, Robert Hampton Jr. and Randy Hampton. The Oklahoma Nursery Association named Wiley "Nursery Man of the Year". Wiley employed many high school and college students at the start of each spring session. Van Brown was one that would go on to become an attorney and later become instrumental in Wiley's retirement and negotiating the sale of the nursery. Wiley took great pleasure in his business and the opportunity it gave him to sponsor a local little league baseball team named the "Dodgers". Wiley never missed an opportunity to watch his two grandsons, Robert and Randy Hampton play with the team. Wiley was proud when his daughter opened "The Oak Tree Nursery and Greenhouse" in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Two of his grandsons followed in his footsteps. Robert Hampton Jr. opened "Charter Oak Landscaping" and Randy Hampton began "H and H Lawn Service". Retirement was difficult at first, but he and Juanita purchased a cabin on Lake Tenkiller and they spent their days fishing, gardening, and riding two- wheelers with their neighbors. In 2002, Wiley and Juanita moved to the Quail Ridge Assisted Living Center, and enjoyed the help and company of the many youngsters employed there. | 2891 | The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 Al Bass died; renowned South Jersey coach Al Bass, 95, an outgoing man and renowned coach at Camden and Woodrow Wilson High Schools, died Saturday. Mr. Bass died of natural causes, according to his son, Myles. "He was a big fixture in South Jersey sports for a lot of years," said Tom Curley, the former Haddon Township football coach who for 15 years was Mr. Bass' golf partner. Mr. Bass, who was born in Philadelphia, was the Camden High baseball coach from 1939 to 1943, compiling an 85-15 record and winning three city championships and three conference titles. He was Camden's boys' basketball coach in 1942 and 1943. Mr. Bass is probably best remembered for his work as the basketball coach at Woodrow Wilson, which he directed to a 122-39 record from 1944 to 1949. In that span, Wilson won five NJSIAA South Jersey titles, along with the NJSIAA state Group 3 crown in 1949. In the 1949 state final, Wilson edged favored Hillside. "I was a young kid, but I remember that game like it was yesterday," Myles Bass said. "Hillside was four inches taller per man, and our center was 6-foot. At that time, no one knew what a press was. He pressed periodically that season, but in that game, he used a press from the start of the game to the end - and Hillside didn't know how to handle it." Myles Bass said Wilson basketball and baseball players would always be at his house, "hanging out" or staying for dinner and "discussing strategies. . . . They loved him." Mr. Bass' baseball teams at Wilson were highly successful, putting together a 105-21 record and winning five South Jersey titles, four conference championships, and five city-series crowns from 1944 to 1949. Mr. Bass was the head of the South Jersey Golf Association and a high school basketball and football referee. Myles Bass remembers Thanksgivings that revolved around sports. "Thanksgiving in our house was going to the Camden-Wilson football game in the morning, and then he would officiate the Vineland-Millville game in the afternoon, and then it was over to Kenney's Restaurant for dinner," Myles Bass said. "Tom Kenney used to coach Camden Catholic and he owned the restaurant." Mr. Bass, who was director of the Camden city Recreation Department from 1950 to 1960, was Wilson's athletic director from 1945 to 1970, and Wilson's dean of students from 1959 until his retirement in 1977. After he retired, he worked for his son in his academic tutoring and consulting business. "He was by my side every single day of his life for the last 35 years," said Myles Bass, a former teacher at Penn's Wharton School of Business. "I didn't want him sitting around after he retired, and he helped me do a number of things." Mr. Bass was named to the South Jersey baseball, basketball and coaches' halls of fame. In 1994, the NJSIAA presented him with an award for outstanding contributions to New Jersey high school golf. Until about four years ago, Mr. Bass was a longtime golf partner of Curley's. Mr. Bass was the former club champion at Iron Rock, now known as the Pennsauken Country Club. "Al was a pure gentleman of golf," said Curley, the former Haddon Township football coach. "He was a fun-loving, outgoing guy who loved to talk, loved to laugh, loved to kid with people." Mr. Bass is survived by his son, Myles; a daughter, Judith; and two grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to 11:30 a.m. services tomorrow at Platt Memorial Chapels, 2001 Berlin Rd., Cherry Hill. Services will begin at noon. Interment will follow at Crescent Memorial Park in Pennsauken. Shiva will be observed until 9 p.m. at the Moorestown home of Myles and Marianne Bass. | 2893 | The Pioneer News, Shepherdsville, Kentucky, Wednesday, August 7, 2019 Joetta Calhoun remembered for her love of MW MOUNT WASHINGTON - Joetta Bass Calhoun and Barry Armstrong knew each other in high school. He remembers her being active in extracurricular activities in high school and always having a smile on her face. As they grew older, both went a different path but both also had a hand in government. While Armstrong would serve many years on the city council, Calhoun went to serve U.S. Rep. William Natcher and Bullitt County Judge Arson Moore. She would then be employed by the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency, where she would ultimately retire. She was reunited with Armstrong as she served on the Mount Washington City Council for a term and then became the town's first female mayor in 2007, where she would serve for eight years. Calhoun, 75, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, at Baptist Health Louisville. "While in office, Joetta ran a very tight ship and was very frugal with her spending," said Armstrong. A change by past administrations allowed the connection fees for water and sewer service to be placed in the general fund. Upon election, Calhoun restored the city's prior practice and these funds were restored to an escrow account for capital projects. Armstrong said because of this move, the city restored its surplus and has allowed his administration to undertake several worthwhile projects. In looking back at his predecessor's administration, Armstrong said there were many accomplishments championed by Calhoun. There was the 16-inch water line along Wales Run. And, the first Light Up Mount Washington was held and it has become an annual holiday event. Trees and decorative plantings were placed around Mount Washington, including the downtown corridor. The Main Street program was initiated and led to sidewalks being installed downtown. A new sidewalk was installed on Highway 44 to Fisher Lane thanks to a grant being secured. And she was instrumental in getting the traffic signal at Armstrong Lane. Armstrong said Calhoun also led the creation of entrance signs into Mount Washington. She also worked with the Bikes with Wings Foundation to have a new skate park constructed in the newly-named Lindsey Duvall Park. For both Calhoun and Armstrong, a need in the community was a sports complex. The leaders often talked about the need but land was expensive. During her second term, Armstrong said the mayor called him and mentioned the city-owned property in its business park off Landis Lane. There would be no cost for the land since the city owned it. While construction didn't begin until Armstrong took office, he was very pleased that she was able to see it built and opened to the community. "Joetta was a good person, a good friend to my wife and I for years and loved her city and, most importantly, the people in it," said Armstrong. "She will be missed." Calhoun was a 1962 graduate of Mount Washington High School and attended both Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. She was also a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She began her career working in the offices of Natcher and Moore before going on to be a regional planner for KIPDA. She is survived by her mother, Hazel Travis Bass; two daughters, Donna (Jerry) Passafiume and Toni Calhoun Unser; two brothers, Bill (Suzy) and David (Libby) Bass; a sister, Alice Jean Lucas; six grandchildren, Brian, Craig, Kevin (Amy), Kimberly, Cole and Addison; three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Xavier and Sebastian; along with a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with burial in Mount Washington Cemetery. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home in Mount Washington.
