| 2819 | The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, July 20, 2017 PETERBOROUGH February 28, 1942 ? July 10, 2017 Alex Bass, 75, died of complications from pneumonia at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on Monday July 10, 2017. A real New Hampshire Yankee has passed away. Alex was a decorated war hero, a proud head of a large family dating back to the original settlement of Peterborough, a dedicated husband and father, a successful businessman, and a consummate outdoorsman. He was tough, strong, loyal, fearless, patriotic, hard-working, practical, skeptical, thrifty, and impervious to bad weather. Eldest son of former New Hampshire Congressman Perkins Bass and Katharine Jackson Bass, Alex was born on February 28, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. Shortly after Alex's birth his father left for China to serve as an intelligence officer with Gen. Clare Chennault of the Flying Tigers. Alex's grandfather, Robert P. Bass, had been governor of New Hampshire, and Alex's brother Charlie would go on to be elected to the same seat in Congress that Perkins Bass had held. Alex attended Dublin School in Dublin, NH and St. Albans School in Washington, DC where his Yankee stubbornness got him in continual trouble with school officials. His high jinks and unwillingness to suffer fools (including teachers) gladly caused him to be frequently confined to campus ? put "on bounds" as St. Albans called it. One year Alex was on bounds the whole winter and built himself a small sailboat in the school's basement. Alex graduated in 1963 from Dartmouth College. He enlisted in the Navy and went to Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. After serving as a Junior Lieutenant on a destroyer, he was given the command of a Swift Boat (PCF 68) in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. On the first day of 1967, Alex and his crew intercepted an 80-foot North Vietnamese armored ship that was attempting to deliver arms and ammunition to the Viet Cong. The fighting lasted all night. Alex finally sunk the North Vietnamese ship and received a Bronze Star with Valor. After leaving the Navy in 1968, Alex attended Columbia University Business School, receiving his MBA in one-and-a-half years despite the ongoing campus student riots (and despite Alex's ongoing cantankerous confrontations with the rioters). In 1969 he married Gwendolyn Brooks of Darien, Connecticut. At first the family settled in Cos Cob, Connecticut, where Alex founded a business and worked for the next ten years. In 1982 Alex and his brother Charlie bought High Standard Incorporated, a maker of architectural exterior cladding based in Dublin, New Hampshire. Alex ran the company with brio and zest for 33 years. He was proud of High Standard's products, and he was the kind of salesman who could have sold elevators to the residents of a trailer park. After High Standard's sale to Nudo Products Inc. in 2013, he retained a management role until his death. Alex's skills as a hunter and fisherman were legendary. He was perpetual "high rod" on the famous salmon rivers of New Brunswick, Canada. He did all his bird hunting with a beautifully wrought .410 shotgun, the smallest of shotgun gauges, a gift from his groomsmen. Alex rarely missed, with cast or blast, and what he pulled up or brought down, he cooked brilliantly. In 2010 Alex's pulmonary health began to degenerate. In 2013 he received a double lung transplant. It was, in fact, a testament to his strength and fitness. At 71, Alex was the oldest man to ever undergo a lung transplant. And it might be said that this was the second time he'd put his life on the line for his country. Fifty years ago, after his service as a Swift Boat skipper, Alex was given command of a sea-going tug in the South Pacific. Unbeknownst to Alex or his sailors the tug was involved in a top secret and still not fully declassified Navy program called Project SHAD. The purpose of Project SHAD ("Shipboard Hazard And Defense") was to test the U.S. Navy's surface ships for vulnerability to chemical and biological warfare. There is evidence that the supposedly innocuous chemical and biological agents used in SHAD actually had deleterious health effects on the Project's unwitting experimental subjects ? in particular on pulmonary health. The Department of Defense denies any connection between SHAD and subsequent illness or mortality. But the Veterans Administration provides full health benefits for ex-servicemen who were exposed to Project SHAD tests. Alex was the first to laugh off this incongruity between words and deeds. "I don't care what the government admits to," he said, "as long as they admit me to the hospital." Indeed Alex was able to laugh off nearly all of the arduous medical treatments and grueling side effects he endured. "Better than the known alternative!" he'd say. Alex is survived by his two sons, Matthew and Marshall, who were with him when he died; his wife of 48 years, Gwendolyn; his grandchildren Chloe, Sophie, Ben, Lillian and Eaton; his four siblings, Bill Bass of Washington DC, and Kitty Cloud, Charlie Bass and Posy Bass all of Peterborough; his step-mother Rosaly Bass; eight nieces and nephews, innumerable cousins including his long-time friend Marshall Field V. And his bird dog Missy. A Memorial celebrating his life will be held at the Hilltop Golf Course, formally the Monadnock Country Club, 49 High St., Peterborough, on Sunday October 1, from 3-5 p.m. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Atlantic Salmon Foundation, Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada E5B358, in Alex's name. | Bass, Alexander (I670)

| 2823 | The Morning Journal-Courier, New Haven, Connecticut, Saturday, 7 October 1905 Thomas A. Bassett Dead Head Of The Firm Of Thomas Phillips & Sons Passed Away After Brief Confinement at Home A Sterling Citizen and Business Man The sad news of the death of Thomas A. Bassett, for a number of years past head of the widely known firm of Thomas Phillips & Son, marble workers on High street, will be much deplored, and a host of friends will experience deep sorrow at his loss. He passed away at his home on High street last evening at 5:30 o?clock. He had been confined to the house but a short time, and only a few days ago was about town. His health, however, had been gradually declining, owing to diabetes, which caused his death. He was a native of this city, was thirty-six years of age, born October 17, 1869. He was one of our much esteemed younger business men, ever courteous, affable, kindly in spirit, of highly pleasing manners and address, a man of honor, integrity, refinement and artistic tastes. He was the only son of S.A. Bassett, one of our well known and esteemed citizens. He was a graduate of Dwight school and Hillhouse High school. he upon the death of his uncle, the lamented Thomas Humphrey Phillips, succeeded to the charge and management of the Phillips Marble works, established by his grandfather more than half a century ago. He developed and enlarged the business, keeping pace with the growth of the city and the increased demands in his line of business. He became first connected with the business at the age of seventeen. On the death of his uncle in 1900 he became head of the firm. 1900 Federal Census of New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut (4 Jun 1900) Thos. A. Bassett 30 M Oct 1869 CT CT CT Head Mfg. Marble ?? Bassett. Prominent among the citizens of New Haven, both in business circles and social life, is Thomas A. Bassett, proprietor of Thomas, Phillips & Son, manufacturers of fine ornamental work. Mr. Bassett was born Oct. 17, 1869, a son of Samuel A. Bassett, a native of what is now Seymour, Conn., and the efficient vice-president of the New Haven Shoe Co. During his boyhood our subject attended the excellent schools of New Haven completing high school, and then entered the office of L. W. Robinson for a course of study. In 1887 he became identified with Thomas Phillips & Sons' marble and granite works, becoming a member of the firm in 1894. Upon the death of Mr. John Humphrey Phillips, his uncle, Sept. 7, 1900, Mr. Bassett assumed complete control, and has most successfully managed the great business since that time. He is of the third generation to engage in business in the same location, No. 143 High Street. On Oct. 30, 1895, Mr. Bassett wedded Miss Natalie Wilson, of Bridgeport, and one child has been born to them, John Humphrey Phillips, born July 28, 1896. Politically Mr. Bassett is a staunch Republican and a member of the Young Men's Republican Club. In his fraternal relations he is a Mason, being connected with Wooster Lodge, No. 79, F. & A.M. and Franklin Chapter No. 2, R.A.M.; he also belongs to Hillhouse Council, Royal Arcanum, and Pyramid Lodge, Ancient Order of United Workmen. He is an expert gold player on the local field, and belongs to the New Haven Gold Club; and also is a member and governor of the Quinnipiac Club, of which his uncle was one of the founders. Mr. Bassett is an ex-sergeant of the New Haven Grays. In his religious connections he is a regular attendant upon the services of the Episcopal Church, to which both he and his wife belong. Mr. Bassett is a true representative of the progressive and successful young men who will leave an impress upon the 20th century. While a thorough business man, showing decided enterprise and public spirit, he permits himself the relaxation to be found in athletics and social functions, these rounding out the character and making a representative of a class destined to produce its effect in the society and in the business world of the future. | Bassett, Thomas Andrew (I16109)

At the end of W.W.II, Doug re-enrolled at University of Michigan and graduated in 1949 with a Juris Doctor Law Degree. Bea and Doug lived in Grand Rapids for a brief time before moving to Mt. Chain Saw Charlie's Deer Camp named his blind "The Judge's Bench". After the death of his first wife in 1971, Doug married Frances Greene Bailey in 1972. | 2825 | The Morning Sun, Pittsburg, Kansas, Sunday, December 11, 2011 Brotherly Love Roscoe Bass Sr. and his identical twin, Robert Bass Sr., 1943 Pittsburg High School graduates, left Kansas and had distinguished careers in education in Seattle. They were born March 2, 1926, in Pittsburg, the sons of Dr. Lewis Napier Bass Sr. and his wife Mary (Adams) Bass. The older by 15 minutes, Robert was also the. rst to go, dying on Nov. 24, 2002. His brother died Nov. 8, 2011, at the age of 85, while visiting relatives in Kansas City. "We were in Pittsburg two days before he passed, showing his hometown to my niece," said his daughter, Rosalyn Bass-Fournier, in an email. The two brothers are fondly remembered by those who knew them. "Their father was a medical doctor, and had his practice where Bitner Motors is now," said Mattye Foxx. "They lived on East 11th Street, and later moved to East Monroe before leaving Pittsburg. Roscoe was just a good, jolly person, always making us laugh." Part of the laughter came from the twins being frequently confused for each other. "You'd think you were talking to one of them, and it was the other," said classmate Homer Cole. He counted Roscoe Bass as a close friend. "He'd call often, and he came to every one of our reunions," Cole said. This was during the days of segregation, and while African American students were allowed to attend PHS, they were kept separate from white students in various ways, including eating separately in the school cafeteria, only using the school swimming pool at the end of the week and having separate dances. "When we had our dances, they'd have to go to the band room," Cole said. "I think they blamed us at first, but we had nothing whatever to do with it. That was the school board's doing. It was at our 60th reunion that Roscoe said he was proud to be a member of our class." "Roscoe and Robert said they never would forget how we were treated, and tried to make amends for it after they left here," Foxx said. Roscoe Bass taught in Texas before beginning in Seattle in 1958 as a substitute teacher. He worked at Luther Burbank School for Boys, where brother Robert started teaching in 1957, and at Queen Anne High School before joining Garfield High School. Roscoe Bass served Garfield as a counselor, assistant principal and principal, and is credited with helping to turn it from a troubled school on the verge of being closed to one of the best in Washington State. After serving as principal for six years, he was assigned to the district's desegregation office. However, he preferred to be in school, working with students, and in 1982 got the top job at Sharples Alternative High School, a school teaching students with social or academic problems. He retired in 1994, but never lost his interest in education, and in October attended a Seattle School Board meeting to offer advice on district policy. He was known as a frequent critic of school district spending practices, and a strong advocate for equal education for all. He was also devoted to his family, including his beloved wife, Zeola (Jones) Bass, who died in 2008. "He and Robert both met their wives at college here and stayed married until their deaths," Foxx said. "His brother was a doctor in Kansas City, but he couldn't go to his funeral because his wife had just died," Cole said. "Roscoe's son, Roscoe Bass Jr., died a couple of weeks before he did." Survivors include his three daughters, Roslyn Bass-Fournier, Sheryll Bass and Paula Evans, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to his wife and twin brother Robert, he was preceded in death by another brother Dr. Lewis Napier Bass Jr., a retired pediatrician, who died in 2008, and sister Harriette Thomas, an educator and counselor, who died in 2010. Both were also PSU graduates. "They were good scholars, good kids and we had a good time," Foxx said. "We never heard anything bad about them. Roscoe and Robert gave their lives to education, and they left their mark." The Seattle Times, Washington, Saturday, November 12, 2011 Roscoe B. Bass Sr. Sunrise March 2, 1926 Sunset November 8, 2011 Roscoe was a long time educator in the Seattle Public Schools, and an advocate for youth in furthering their education. Roscoe touched many lives and will be fondly remembered. He attended school in Pittsburg, KS. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army in 1945, was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis WA. 1946 due to the end of WWII. Roscoe graduated from the Kansas State Teachers College in 1951 where he received his Bachelor of Science. He worked the Railroads' Postal Car before traveling to Seattle in 1956. He began his teaching career as a substitute teacher in 1959 at Luther Burbank School for Boys on Mercer Island. Subsequently hired by Seattle Public Schools in 1960. With the School District he held a variety of positions from teacher to guidance counselor, administrator, assistant principal and, ultimately, principal. In addition to his regular school district assignment he earned his master's degree from Seattle University in August 1972. After 30 plus years of service Roscoe retired in 1994. As his wife Zeola use to say "You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy!" Roscoe was an avid flower and vegetable gardener growing flowers year ?round so his yard was always colorful. He provided his family with tomatoes, green onions, potatoes collard greens and carrots to name just a few. As a devoted family man he spent time with his family playing cards, camping, fishing and going to drive in movies. He was a "Jack of many trades" master of none but seem to get the job done. He had many talents which included car repair, concrete pouring, carpenter, electrician, sports enthusiast, plumber. The list goes on and on. He enjoyed conversation and reading autobiographies in his spare time. Roscoe was preceded by his beloved wife Zeola (Jones) Bass, son Roscoe "Rocky" Bass Jr., older siblings Lewis Napier Bass Jr., Harriette Thomas, identical twin Robert Alexander Bass Sr. Roscoe leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories: daughters Paula (Clifton) Evans, Rosalyn (Maurice Fournier) Bass-Fournier, Sheryll "Reiko" Bass, Grandchildren Kimberly Randle, Tanisha (Kasha) Hughes, Roscoe III, Solon (Celia), Jessie Bass, Mackenzie and Kendall Fournier. | 2833 | The New York Times, 8 April 2020 Anne Bass, 78, Arts Patron and Peerless Gardener, Dies By Deborah Solomon A leading philanthropist, she championed, without fanfare, the New York City Ballet and numerous art museums. She also loved her dahlias. Anne Hendricks Bass, the arts patron who helped raise the profile of ballet in the United States, harking back to an era when art was viewed as a vehicle for beauty and moral uplift, died on April 1 at her home in Manhattan. She was 78. Julian Lethbridge, her longtime partner, said the cause was ovarian cancer. Ms. Bass was well established in Fort Worth before she made her name in New York City, and her style as a patron was entirely her own. In contrast to boastful Texans with their McRanches or status-hungry New Yorkers in pursuit of donor plaques, Ms. Bass was reticent and aloof. Slender with pale blue eyes, she armored herself with an apparent indifference to the less gracious aspects of life, which included her much-publicized divorce from the oilman Sid Bass in the 1980s. She saved her energy for her interests, especially gardening and architecture, which she pursed with a seriousness that was almost alarming to those who knew her. ?Anne was a research junkie,? said Heather Watts, a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and one of Ms. Bass?s closest friends. ?If I told her I liked dahlias, I?d receive articles and books about dahlias.? When Ms. Bass spoke of her ?renovation? projects, she didn?t mean a new stove and kitchen cabinets. Rather, she was consumed by the restoration of sprawling swaths of land, in both New England and in the Caribbean, drawn to a vision of a pristine naturalness that predated the arrival of cars and vacationers. Her country estate in northwest Connecticut, in Kent, fans out to cover about 1,000 acres. In addition to the obligatory emerald pastures and winding fieldstone walls, the estate embraces multiple gardens, a working farm and a herd of 97 Randall cows that evoke the bovine ghosts of centuries past. ?We have some of her cows on our property, and they?re eating the grass right now,? Agnes Gund, her neighbor in South Kent and fellow philanthropist, said this week. ?I admired Anne very much, especially what she did for the land.? Her gardens, according to her family, are to be preserved, probably as some kind of land conservancy. ?Nothing will be sold,? Mr. Lethbridge said, ?neither in Connecticut, nor Nevis or Texas.? In the philanthropic world, Ms. Bass remained best-known as a champion of City Ballet and its school, where she was a board member from 1980 to 2005. She adored George Balanchine, the brilliantly inventive choreographer who co-founded the ballet, and she felt that the company, if not all of existence, declined in quality after he left. Ms. Bass herself danced up until the end of her life. Three times a week, she put on black leotard and tights and took a 90-minute morning class in advanced ballet. Her instructor for decades, the dance master Wilhelm Burmann, died only two days before her. Anne Hyatt Hendricks was born on Oct. 19, 1941, in Indianapolis, the oldest of four children. Her father, John Wesley Hendricks, was a surgeon and urologist. Her mother, Jean (Brown) Hendricks, was an avid sportswoman whose shelves were lined with golf trophies. Educated at Vassar College like her mother, she majored in Italian literature. She married Mr. Bass, her college sweetheart and billionaire heir to a Texas oil fortune, in 1965. As a young wife with two young daughters and living in Fort Worth, she and Mr. Bass, enamored of modernist architecture, commissioned a house from Paul Rudolph, an avatar of Brutalist design. But in contrast to his signature stacks of concrete blocks, the Bass house is widely regarded as a masterpiece of lightness ? an airy, all-white edifice with calming horizontal planes jutting out over the Texas hills. The grounds were designed by Russell Page, the British gardener responsible for landscaping the Frick Museum in New York. The Bass marriage ended abruptly in 1986, when Mr. Bass left his wife for the socialite Mercedes Kellogg. The tabloids reveled in every detail of the romance, which reportedly began at a formal ball when Ms. Kellogg threw a dinner roll across the room at Mr. Bass. The divorce, in 1988, left Ms. Bass with a settlement estimated at $200 million. She was able to hold onto the house in Fort Worth, as well as a Manhattan pied-ŕ-terre on Fifth Avenue and its lofty contents: paintings by Monet and Mark Rothko, and an original bronze cast of Degas?s ?Little 14-Year-Old Dancer.? In subsequent years, Ms. Bass became one of New York?s most respected philanthropists, supporting, in large but unflashy ways, the New York Botanical Garden, the Museum of Modern Art and, especially, the New York Public Library and its Jerome Robbins Dance Division, which is housed at Lincoln Center and holds the largest archive on the history of dance in the world. Ms. Bass never remarried. She met Mr. Lethbridge, an accomplished artist six years her junior, in 1993. He specializes in large-scale abstract paintings that feel rooted in nature, variously evoking winter tree branches, churning waves or rosy dawns. In addition to Mr. Lethbridge, Ms. Bass is survived by two daughters, Hyatt Bass, a novelist, and Samantha Bass, a photographer. As a board member, Ms. Bass was sometimes described as brusque and implacable. In 1987, as a longtime trustee of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, she was blamed for a high institutional turnover: Within a decade, three directors and an interim director had arrived and departed in short order. Even those who admired her exacting standards could be bothered by ?the Bass body count,? as Texas Monthly put it, referring to the arts administrators who had failed to cut it in her eyes. But to many her stubbornness came to seem like inspired foresight in regard to Peter Martins, the former head of City Ballet and its school. He left his position in 2018 amid accusations of sexual harassment and verbal abuse. As early as 2005, Ms. Bass had sounded a warning, resigning from the school?s board and charging Mr. Martins, in a private letter, with gross misconduct. More specifically, she accused Mr. Martins of inflicting ?cruel and excessive punishment? on a student whom he had expelled just a few weeks before graduation. The student, Sokvannara Sar, was a Cambodian prodigy whom Ms. Bass had brought to the New York five years earlier and sponsored at the School of American Ballet. Mr. Martins, she said, had made the student ?an innocent and disposable casualty of boardroom politics in which he played no part.? Mr. Martins has not publicly responded to the allegations. In the end, Mr. Sar graduated on schedule after a two-week expulsion. He achieved fame in 2010, when Ms. Bass captured their friendship in ?Dancing Across Borders? an upbeat documentary that marked her directorial debut. The film tracks Mr. Sar?s unlikely journey to the United States from his native Siem Reap, where, in poverty, he had wandered the streets without shoes. Ms. Bass met him in 2000, at the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia, where she saw him dance with a folk group and was awed by his charismatic stage presence. Four months later, Mr. Sar, a 16-year-old who spoke no English, arrived in New York, a newcomer to ballet. Now 36, Mr. Sar is a soloist with the Carolina Ballet in Raleigh, N.C. Speaking by phone, he said that he had last spent extended time with Ms. Bass three years ago, when he recuperated from foot surgery on her Connecticut estate. He often awoke to find gardening books stacked on the table beside his bed. Mr. Sar said that Ms. Bass had seemed to enjoy nothing more than solitude. ?Anne loved to be just by herself, in her boots,? he said, ?picking the weeds out of the garden.? | Hendricks, Anne Hyatt (I5680)

| 2837 | The Newnan Times-Herald, Georgia, Saturday, 22 November 2025 Jane Hamby Bass On November 21, 2025, Jane Hamby Bass?a beloved matriarch, devoted Christian, and pillar of her community?was called home to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 92. Born on New Year's Eve in 1932 in Greenville, Georgia, to William Reginald Hamby and Opal Fuller Hamby, Jane lived a life defined by unwavering faith, selfless love, and dedicated service to her family and community. Jane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Horace Bass; her son, Brent; her son-in-law, Boyd Pettite; her sister, Betty Loftin, and her husband, Leo; and her brother, Billy Hamby. Though she now rests in eternal peace, her legacy of love continues through the family she cherished. She is survived by her sons, Blake Bass and his wife, Lila; and Mark Bass and his wife, Alice; as well as her daughter, Amanda Pettite; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Bass. She is also survived by her sister, Loretta Hamby; her grandchildren, Christopher Bass and Stephanie, Emily Bass, Morgan Gasaway and Robert, Stephen Bass and Madie, Katie Pettite, Karlee Pettite, and Austin Bass. Jane's heart overflowed with joy for her great-grandchildren, Ethan Bass, Maggie Bass, Kenslee Gasaway and Grayson Burnham, and she eagerly awaited the arrival of another great-grandson from Stephen and Madie, due in June 2026. Jane was also a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews. A woman of deep and abiding faith, Jane was a devout Christian who took tremendous pride in her spiritual heritage. She served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, President of the Women's Missionary Union, leader of Acteens and GAs, member of the church choir, and later in life volunteered in the church nursery. Throughout her life, she was a committed member of several churches, including Mills Chapel Baptist Church, Westside Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Newnan, where she found fellowship, strength, and purpose in worship and service. Jane's remarkable work ethic was well known in the community. She began working at age 14 at Lee King Drug Store on the court square. For the next 45 years, she devoted her career to Playtex International, retiring as the company's payroll clerk. Her extraordinary memory and dedication were a source of wonder to her family. Even in her final months, she could still recall the clock numbers of former employees?a testament to the relationships she built and the care she brought to everything she did. A special thanks is extended to Amanda, Katie, and Karlee, who shared their home with "Ma Jane" and lovingly cared for their mother and grandmother. The family also expresses deep appreciation to the staff of Lee-Goodrum Pharmacy?especially the late John Goodrum, Casey, Hunter, and Emily?who patiently listened to her frequent calls to the pharmacy about her prescriptions; after all, Jane was convinced she knew more than her doctors. Our gratitude also goes to the staff of Southland Rehabilitation for the compassionate care they provided during her last six months, the staff at Brightmoor Hospice and Cherry Toney her N.P. Jane was more than the sum of her accomplishments. She was the foundation upon which her family was built, a faithful servant who pointed others toward Christ, and a gentle soul whose love touched all who knew her. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of faith, family, and service?a masterpiece that will continue to inspire generations to come. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable woman, we also celebrate a life extraordinarily well lived. Jane's legacy endures in the faith she shared, the love she gave, and the countless lives she touched through her grace and kindness. "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." ? She was surrounded by her family. Cathy is the daughter of George Bradshaw and Elizabeth Byrd Bradshaw, who predeceased her. She is the wife of Richard Lee Bass. She was preceded in death by her sister JoAnne Bradshaw. Cathy lived the example of kindness guided by her faith and strength in Christ. She always offered a positive attitude, a kind word, a caring touch and maybe even subtle bullying when needed. One of her greatest joys was giving of herself. As a lifetime active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she found great joy in serving others. She loved serving in her local church ward where she actively served on numerous church auxiliaries committees. Cathy retired from Edgecombe Community College after 29 years where she was employed as the Administrative Assistant to two college presidents. Cathy was well-known throughout her community by college students who she influenced along the way. She had a great love for her family and friends, and enjoyed spending time with them making treasured memories filled with love and laughter. She adored her grandkids and especially loved spending time with them. She loved watching sports, especially any in which her grandkids participated. It was not unusual to find her at one of their games cheering them on from the sidelines. She did her best to instill in her family a strong sense of right and wrong, self-worth, a love for family, and a desire to help others. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue a good education, develop their talents, experience spiritual growth, and serve others in the community. We will miss her wisdom, keen intellect, sense of humor, and the way she made everyone feel loved in her own special way. Cathy leaves a legacy of her "Be a Happifier" approach to life, and her legacy of love, service, and laughter to her family. Karin then worked for USAA in their Colorado Springs policy services division. After the birth of their first child, Mikaela, Karin stayed home to provide the love and support to both Mikaela and Preston. Karin volunteered with the children?s ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. It was there she realized her talents (and patience) of working with young children. Over the years, she worked in the various school districts as a teacher?s aide and substitute teacher, including Jupiter, FL and Williamsburg, VA. Most recently she worked with Special Education students at James River Elementary School in the Williamsburg/James City County school district. She beamed with pride in knowing she was helping make a difference in those young children?s lives. Karin was an avid Denver Broncos fan. She?ll be looking down on them this weekend and cheering them on in Super Bowl 50, as she celebrates her 50 years of living on this earth. Karin will be remembered for her big smile and warm and caring heart. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Nelsen?s Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA. A memorial service will occur at a later date in Colorado where her family and lifelong friends reside. You can share your memories or express your condolences by signing the virtual guest-book found on the Nelsen Funeral Home Williamsburg, VA website. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.nelsencares.com. | Bassett, Karin (I3011)
