Robert Henry Bassett
1924 ? 2021

Robert Henry Bassett passed away Sept. 28, 2021, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. Iowa Cremation is in charge of the arrangements. Robert (Bob) was born at home on Sept. 21, 1924, to George and Ruth (Burington) Bassett. Throughout his childhood, Bob worked with his father and brother, Paul, on the family dairy farm near Arlington, Iowa (Bassett's Pheasant Ridge Century Farm). Bob married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie (Antwine) on May 1, 1945, and started dairy farming southeast of Arlington on a 120-acre parcel in 1948. As time passed, he realized that farming was not for him. So at age 31 Bob and wife Bonnie started down a new path. Bob sold a guernsey to pay tuition. They were caring for three children (and five by the time he graduated), operating the farm full time and attending classes at Upper Iowa University. It took a tremendous amount of courage and determination to get through the next four years. Bob graduated in four years Magna Cum Laude and accepted his first teaching position in Clarence, Iowa. Furthering his education, he received a master's degree in administration from the University of Iowa. He also attended classes at Iowa State University and ultimately accepted a position as principal at Corwith-Wesley Community School District and then at Ida Grove Community School District. While in Ida Grove, he and Bonnie hosted a German foreign-exchange student, Matthias Terlau, who has remained a close family friend. Bob retired after 25 years in education and returned with Bonnie to the family farm site to build a new home. Energy efficiency was foremost in his mind so the home was designed using such features as passive solar, geo-thermal energy and earth berms. Bob received an award from Trees Forever for reforestation and riparian projects completed on their land. The home continues to be the center of family gatherings. Bob's pastimes included fishing on the family pond, woodworking, genealogy, writing a family history, and restoring the family barn built by his grandfather in 1879. Bob loved singing and often would ask others to join him in song. Bob was a religious man, taking leadership roles in churches wherever he lived. He was kind and loving. He will be forever missed by his wife Bonnie, family and friends. Bob is survived by his wife of 76 years, Bonnie Lou (Antwine) Bassett of Edgewood, Iowa; his children, Sandra Lou (George) Wysock of Madison, Wis., Raylin Eugene (Dawn) Bassett of Kanawha, Iowa, John D. Bassett of Arlington, Iowa, Catherine Larene (Duane) Widen of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Michael Linn (Beverly) Bassett of Center Point, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Preceding him death were his parents; his brother, Paul LaVern; an infant daughter, Georgeanne; and an infant brother, Forest Burdette. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Fayette County Historical Society, Trees Forever in Marion, Iowa, or the Community Bible Church in Strawberry Point, Iowa. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the Edgewood Convalescent Home for their care of our father and the continued care of our mother. Services are closed to the public due to Covid concerns. Cards may be sent to Bonnie at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, P.O. Box 189, Edgewood, IA 52042.

Steven Joseph Bessette

We're sad to share the passing of Steven Joseph Bessette on November 9, 2023, with his family by his side, after struggling with several medical issues over the past year. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Joseph and Janine (Borkowski) Bessette.

Steve was an accomplished surrealist artist, influenced by Salvador Dali, painting many amazing paintings, drawings, and personal greeting cards for family, friends, and co-workers over the years. He had a lifelong passion for ancient history, military history specializing in the Civil War, and World Wars I and II, ancient and modern coins, archaeology, paleontology, antiquing, and a love of the macabre, especially H.P. Lovecraft.

Steve dreamed of living in Gettysburg, visiting many times since childhood. His dream was fulfilled when he and his wife, Monica, moved here 13 years ago. He did a stint at Adams County Winery; drove the 1930's Historic Tours bus, touring the town and battlefield; was an integral member of Sleepy Hollow Ghost Tours, reliving history like no other and captivating his audience with his vast knowledge and storytelling abilities; and spent the last eight years in his dream profession of numismatist in a local coin shop.

Steve leaves his beloved wife, Monica (McQuade) Bessette, together 49 years; his loving brother, David Bessette, sister-in-law, Lori Bessette, their three adult children, Justin, Michael, and Shanna Bessette, and their five children. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Diane McQuade; brother-in-law, Bob McQuade and wife Diane; nieces, Deanna Roy and daughter Jenna Roy, and Debra Fowler and husband Dave; cousins, Jeni Ryan and daughter Mairead; lifelong BFFs, Phil and Mary DiMaria; and members of Battery B, First Rhode Island Light Artillery, who will provide an honor guard at both Monahan Funeral Home and Evergreen Cemetery, where Steve will be laid to rest between his two heroic Gettysburg patriots, Virginia "Jennie" Wade and John Burns.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 17, 2023, at 11 a.m. from Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Norma (nee Logan) Bassett
August 4, 1932 ? July 25, 2025

Peacefully, on Friday, July 25, 2025, at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late George. Cherished mother of the late Carolyn (Andrew Goodman). Also predeceased by siblings, Elizabeth Scott (Kenneth); and brother, Hugh Logan (Marie). Norma was born in east-end Toronto and raised in a home that instilled in her a love of books and music, and encouraged her boundless curiosity. She attended Riverdale Collegiate and went on to attend Normal School. Early adulthood required Norma to work several office jobs. A stint as a teacher in Northern Ontario preceded adventures traveling in Europe prior to marriage. With George, she settled in Etobicoke, lovingly raising Carolyn. She was an active member of the church, a staunch member of the Richard III society, an avid stamp collector, and maker of exquisite needlepoint crafts. Despite her bookish nature, she had a wide social circle and enjoyed connecting with informal stories on one hand, and serious history on the other. Not always one to showcase the profound intellect that lurked inside, Norma aimed to cheer you up with "Loganesque" humour. Her disarming nature formed many lifelong bonds. In memory of Norma, please consider donating to funds supporting undergraduate students at a small university, such as Trent or UNB. Visitation will be held at Royal York Road United Church, 851 Royal York Rd., Etobicoke, on Sunday, August 10th, from 12:15 ? 1:00 p.m. The service will begin at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow. The Gospel Messenger, December, 1885
Biographical, Elder Sion Bass (Includes picture)

I was the first child of John and Annie Bass, and was born in Sumner county, Tenn., Aug. 11th, 1802. My father and mother were natives of North Carolina, and both Primitive Baptists. I think I saw them baptized, though I was very small. In the second year of my age, father moved to Wilson county, Tenn., on the watgers of Round Lick crek, where I have lived ever since. In my 21st year I took a notion to marry and settle myself, and married Sally philips, who is still living, and in her 82nd year. We have lived together about sixty-one years, and I think I risk nothing in sayin gshe has been a great helpmate to me, both secular and ministerial. Her father and mother were both Primitive Baptists.
I now turn to my experience; I believed while in my natural state, whether from tradition, or otherwise, that there was a prepartion necessary for eternity, but like all other carnal men, thought there was time enough; and went on in my carnal ways, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and was by nature, a child of wrath as others, promising the Lord that after a while I would turn and seek him, but broke them as fast as I made them. I went on making and breaking promises until the latter part of July, 1828, at which time I went to Grandfather Wherries, in Sumner county, Tenn., to invite the relatives to the wedding, which was to come off in August. Whilst there I took occasion to walk out in the corn-field, and whilst out there, the promises I had made the Lord came into my mind, accompanied with gloomy apprehension and fearful forebodings ? the law accusing me for telling the Lord so many lies, saying, ?Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things written in the book of the law to do them.? I now tried to keep that law that was written in my heart of salvation from sin; but the law is spiritual, holy, just, and good, and me, a poor sinner, condemned, and jsutly; and if it had been possible for me to have kept that law every whit, it would have been a religion of law and not gospel; it would have been of works and not of grace; and the scriptures would not have been true that by the deeds of the law no flesh shall be justified. Thus I went on, ruined and condemned, till one memorable night at my father?s, at a night meeting, after preaching; as there was some excitement in the congregation in time of service, and as it was customary to call for mourners, the invitation was given, and I said in my heart that I was the one that desired the prayers of God?s people, so I went and knelt by the side of a bench, and prayer being ended, I got up, sat on the beach, and that strange occurrence appeared to me again; yes, it came upon me again ? my whole physical frame was shocked; I thought I should fall on the floor; I sprang to my feet, went into the little room and fell on a bed ot my left, and it did appear that my mind became passive for the weill of God to be done. And when I gave up al lhope of being saved by the deeds of the law, immediately these words of Jesus passed through my mind, ?Arise, take up thy bed and walk,? immediately the gloom and fearful forebodings were gone, and I was left as calm as a little infant. Upon this report I was received into the fellowhip of Spring Creek Church, Wilton county, Tenn., anhd was baptized by Leder John Jones.
Here, permit me to say, as to my impressions to preach, or teach, as we call it a call to the ministry ? if ever I received a call to the ministry, it commenced at my conversion to God; from that time uneasiness of mind to talk to the people about the great truths of the gospel and defned them, continued until is became a great burden, so that I could see no satisfaction. I resolved to talk to the church about it, and told them the impressions of my mind, and asked advice; they told me to go tell it wherever God, in providence, cast my lot. Here an old sister broke out and said ?Loose the colt and let it go, for the Master had need of it.? After hearing and proving me about eighteen months, and finding me as they thought, sound in the faith, my ordination was called, and a presbytery, consisting of Elders James Bond, Levy Durham, and John Jones, who, after examination and prayer by James Bond, a laying on of their hands, the right hand of fellowship was given me therunto. I have been in the service of my Master, trying to soe the seed of truth, about fifty-three or fifty-four years; where this seed has fallen I know not, but the Master knoweth, and that?s enough. So, farewell brthren in the Lord, once and all. SION BASS.
Elder Bass departed this life September 27th, 1884. See obituary in MESSENGER of June, ?85. ? Ed.

Elder Sion Bass

Elder Sion Bass was born August 11th, 1802, in Sumner county, Tenn., and died September 27th, 1884; aged 82 years, 1 month and 16 days. In his second year his father moved to Wilson county, then a wilderness. At the age of 21 he was married to Miss Sallie Philips, who now survives him at the age of 82 years. In about 18 months after his marriage he became concerned about his salvation, and remained in that condition about 18 months, which was bout the year 1825, in which the Lord revealed himself as his Saviour. He joined the Baptist Church at Spring Creek, Wilson county, in the year 1827, and commenced preaching in the year 1930. After hearing him and proving him about 18 months, the church was satisfied with his fight, and called for his ordination. A presbytery was called, consisting of the following named elders: James Bond, Levi Durham and John Jones. He was shortly afterward called to the care of Round Lick Church, and served her as pastor for 45 years. He also served Brush Church near 40 years. When the innovation began to creep in the churches, and Associations caused by the Fuller doctrine, he was among the first to oppose them, taking a bold stand against the State Convention; in a word, opposing the institutions of men being connected with the church. He was among the first to withdraw from Sale Association on the account of those institutions. He was in the organization of the Round Lick Association of the Primitive Baptists, and served as Clerk of the Association 28 years; and after he resigned the clerkship he was elected Moderator several times. He was a good disciplinarian, as long as he could hear will (he became deaf in his last days). He attended as messenger from his church (Round Lick, having joined by letter from Spring Creek) forty sessions without missing one. He was greatly afflicted with a cough the last 35 years of his life, but, strange to say, it never interfered with his speaking except about twice, in he last efforts. His last discourse was on the fifth Sunday in August, 1884, near his home. In preaching he referred to the doctrine he had contended for during his ministry. He said he was not afraid to risk it. He preached about thirty minutes, with great effect. In June, the first Sunday, 1883 he preached the next to the last sermon he ever preached, which was able.
In his last sickness he said the end was near. He bore his sickness with patience, waiting patiently for the summons. About midnight on Friday night he had a spell of coughing which lasted near an hour, after which he lay easy on his side; then he turned on his back and put his hands across hi breast and lay that way near half an hour, and breathed his last, dying like one going to sleep.
Brother Bass was a gifted man, mighty in the scriptures, and able defender, a good speaker, and a mighty reasoner. There were but a few that were his equals; sound in the faith, contending or the salvation alone of God?s people by grace, they having no qualification in nature to do good works. The doctrine of election and predestination of God?s people were great themes with him. He was a men with untiring energy. It was several years he was nearly along in the Round Lick Association ? only one other old minister, and he was not able to travel; yet he traveled, and done all he could to keep the churches together until the Lord raised up more preachers. When the Parker two-sse heresy sprung up he opposed it, contending for the salvation of the Adam sinner. He las left his dear old companion, a Primitive Baptist, who is blind, to grieve at the present parting, but to soon meet again, to be with Jesus forever; also, eight children to mourn his death ? some entertaining a hope to meet him, while others have not expressed a hope. Children, how do you feel on the subject, some not having discharged their duty? Will you not follow Christ, as your father has done, who could say when his departure was at hand, I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith, and hence there is a crown of righteousness laid up for me the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me in the day, Etc. ?

William Hartwell Bass, Jr.
February 28, 1937 ? August 17, 2024

Chesapeake, Virginia - William Hartwell Bass Jr. passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake, VA. He was born on February 28, 1937 in Danville, VA. He was the son of William Hartwell Bass, Sr. and Myrtle Booth Bass. He graduated from James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, VA in 1955 and North Carolina State in Raleigh, NC with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1960 and a Master of Economics in 1970. He is survived by son Dr. Cameron (Dale) Bass and wife Kathy of Detroit, MI; son Lawrence Bass and wife Beth of Raleigh, NC; daughter Cynthia Bass of Raleigh, NC; and eight grandchildren, Dr. Greg Bass (Adam) of Melbourne, AUS, Charlie Bass (Allison) of Durham, NC, Caitlin Bass of Charleston, SC, Rachel Bass, David Bass, and Alexander Bass of Raleigh, NC, and Casey Yelverton and Abby Claire Yelverton of Apex, NC. He also leaves behind his sister Norma Lee Bass Mears, and extended family including close step-granddaughter Brittany Todd Elliot (Billy and their children Braelynn and Branson). He was preceded in death by his first wife Claire Tolar Bass Kirven; his second wife Shirley Parker Todd Bass; and his granddaughter Ashley.

If you don't count the time he spent with F.W. Orrick Tree Surgeon, SH Kress, and putting himself through college as a draftsman, Bill had two distinct careers. The first, starting in Raleigh, NC in the 1960's, took him across Europe and Africa for ITT Corporation, eventually as a Director of Corporate Quality for ITT's far flung operations. He worked at ITT Europe in the late 1970's. He occasionally lived in Waterloo, Belgium with his family when he was not on the road for ITT. Following ITT's dissolution of the entire New York headquarters Quality staff, he headed south.

He met his second wife, Shirley, when he settled in Virginia Beach, and they had 35 happy years together, eventually resettling to her childhood hometown of Chesapeake and marrying. This chance meeting led to Bill's second career in Real Estate, first supporting Shirley in her highly successful real estate career with Rose & Womble Real Estate and then developing properties with Shirley. In their later years, Bill and Shirley travelled extensively, often on cruises compelled by the bargains he was able to score for various destinations he targeted. He was accused of valuing the bargain more than a particular destination, a charge he did not deny.

In his younger years, he was an expert Amateur Radio operator under the call sign W4UWS, producing morse code so fast that his children could not recognize any particular sequence of dots and dashes. He was well known for his humor, telling many stories interspersed with laughter. He quite enjoyed playing bridge, and a good meal.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Monday, August 26, 2024 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel and Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322.

Dorothy Myhre

Dorothy Hughes Myhre, who was loved greatly and will be missed dearly by her immediate and large extended family, died on December 10, 2013 in Bellingham, WA. She entered eternal life with Jesus Christ four days before her 96th birthday. Dorothy was born on December 14, 1917 in Ferndale, WA the oldest child and only daughter of Horace L. "Bud" Hughes and Doy (Slater) Hughes. She graduated from Ferndale High School in 1935 and attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. After living in Seattle, WA during World War II, Dorothy met and later married Richard J. Myhre. They were married on May 28, 1949, and later moved to Edmonds, WA where they lived for almost 40 years while raising four children. She participated in PTA during her children's school years and led a Campfire group when her daughter Doy was a member. With Dick, she was a ski school chaperone for several years. Dorothy and Dick were active in the Edmonds United Methodist Church. They loved square dancing and playing bridge with a special group of Edmonds friends. In 1964 Dorothy became the first paid Director of Volunteers at what was then called Stevens Memorial Hospital in Edmonds, and she remained in that position until her retirement in 1984. After that Dorothy and Dick divided their time between residences at Birch Bay, WA and in Mesa, Ariz., though in recent years they lived year-round at Birch Bay. Along with square dancing and bridge, Dorothy had many hobbies over the years, including golf, skiing, clogging, reading, genealogy, cross-stitching, hardanger embroidery, antiques, bird watching, agate hunting on the beach at Birch Bay, and following the University of Washington football team, her beloved Huskies. She was a member of PEO chapters in Ferndale, Edmonds and Blaine, WA and was honored in 2013 for 75 years of membership. She also belonged to the Whatcom Chapter of the Daughters of Pioneers. But of all her many interests, her foremost love was her family. Holidays and birthdays were special events and she treasured those get-togethers throughout her life, and particularly in her later years when she enjoyed nothing more than doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the person most responsible for continuing the tradition of a Fourth of July celebration for extended family at Birch Bay, an annual gathering that brings together several generations of descendants of John and Inda Slater of Ferndale, Dorothy's maternal grandparents. Dorothy is survived by Richard, her husband of more than 64 years; and by son, Craig Knowlton (Sheryl) of Edgewood, son, Keith Knowlton (Julie) of Kirkland, daughter, Doy Groenenberg (Calvin) of Yakima, and son Richard Myhre Jr. (Joyce) of Edmonds. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A private internment service will be held for immediate family at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Garden Street United Methodist Church in Bellingham. Memorials may be made in Dorothy's name to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 2901 Squalicum Parkway, Bellingham 98225-1851.
