Walt Bassett (Picture included)
June 9, 1929 ? March 4, 2017

Walt Bassett, 87, was born in Fern Prairie, near Camas, WA, on June 9, 1929 to Bert and Cloa (Moore) Bassett. He attended Camas High School, where he met his lifetime "Honey", Vera Sage. They were married on May 8th, 1948, and spent nearly 69 happy years together. They had two children, Richard "Dick" and Sharon. Walt worked in the Camas paper mill, before becoming an insurance agent in the early 1960s. But he soon realized that was a mistake, and spent the next 35 years as a Real Estate Broker. He founded Battle Ground Realty, (today known as Coldwell Banker United Brokers) and later WRB Company. He was involved in the development of The Cedars and High Valley, and also built Battle Ground Plaza. He and Dick dabbled in selling used cars, and Walt enjoyed buying and selling his own new cars, mostly Cadillac's. He and Vera were Snow Birds, and enjoyed about 25 winters in the Palm Springs, CA area, before age and infirmity kept them home year-round. He was also an avid Mariners fan. After a long decline, Walt quietly slipped away on Saturday, March 4th.
He is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses: Dick Bassett (Janae Phipps) and Sharon (Terry) Woosley; 3 grandchildren: Stacey Bassett, Holli Woosley Smith and Kyle Woosley; and 2 great-grandchildren: Caroline and Parker Woosley. Services will be Saturday, March 18th, 12:30 p.m., at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Robert N. Bassett

Robert N. Bassett passed away July 7, 2013, at home in Palm Springs, Calif.

Bob always did things with flair ? not perhaps the classy kind of flair his wife, Maxine, would have always preferred ? but with a joy and enthusiasm that couldn?t help make her smile nonetheless.

You might have have thought Bob, born to George and Helen Bassett in the tiny community of Ontario, Wis., was destined to be a dairy farmer. You would have been wrong. Milking cows and the jobs associated with those tail-switchin? bovines were activities Bob was eager to make part of his history, not his future.

In high school, he took college entrance exams and had the highest scores recorded for the University of Wisconsin, but he couldn?t afford the tuition, so he joined the Navy, promising Maxine, his high school sweetheart, that he?d be back to marry her as soon as he finished training. At enlistment, he tested very highly again and was offered the opportunity to attend Naval Officers? School and train to become a fighter pilot. At that time, though, program participants weren?t allowed to be married; Bob opted to wed Maxine instead and was given his choice of assignments. That?s how a young couple from dairy farms ended up in Honolulu.

After discharge, Bob earned his BA in electrical engineering and entered the aerospace industry in its infancy, working on weapons for the Vigilante bomber in Columbus, Ohio, for North American Aviation (which eventually became Autonetics, Rockwell and finally Boeing). He and Maxine moved with their two daughters, Tonya and Sandy, to Orange (California), where Bob worked on projects including Gemini, Apollo, the Space Shuttle and, finally, Aegis anti-missile efforts.

Bob?s wild sense of humor and his practical jokes made him well known at work, especially in contrast to the more staid ?engineer? personalities of many of his peers. But his quick mind, high level of technical skills ? as well as his well-developed people skills ? made him a valuable team member, and Boeing repeatedly called him out of retirement to help with special projects.

Bob loved golf, travel (anywhere at all counted!), discovering the best local happy hours, arguing just for the sake of it, exercising and trying new experiences. Most of all, Bob enjoyed people. He treasured Maxine, and they worked, laughed, and loved through 60 years of marriages. Family and friends frequently smiled as they saw Bob?s 6?2? frame bent down to kiss Maxine (at a tiny 5?2?) as she looked up to him in love. Bob consciously invested his love for life into Tonya and Sandy, spending hours with them at driving ranges, teaching them to drive stick shift on hills, encouraging hobbies like skiing and playing ukulele, explaining the intricacies of algebra and, most of all, modeling with his own life what to look for in a man.

Bob is survived by his wife, Maxine of Laguna Woods, Calif.; his sister, Jean DeWitt (fiance Rich Vieth) of Sparta; his daughters, Tonya (Mark) Dale of Paradise, Calif., and Sandy Bassett (fiance Bob Scherner and his children, Samantha and Henry) of Boulder, Colo.; two grandsons and their wives, Matthew (Daniel) Dale and Alden (Amy) Dale; and one great-granddaughter, Sonyah Dale.

He is also survived by sister-in-law Arlene Teal of Fulton, Ill., and nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Virginia Bass Tart, 100

Virginia Bass Tart passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at UNC Hospice in Pittsboro with her family by her side. Virginia was 100 years old.

Virginia was born Oct. 26, 1922, to Chester and Mary Page Bass of Cumberland County. Throughout her life, she worked hard and excelled at anything that she attempted ? from sports to cooking and all kinds of needlework to artwork. The only girl who tried out to be a school bus driver, she scored higher than all the boys by executing a turn by the rules. The pinnacle of her high school experience was when she caught the ball for the final out during a championship softball game, resulting in a win over rival Coats High and the reward of riding home on the fender of her coach's car. Virginia graduated from Central High School in 1939 and remained close to her high school classmates throughout her life.

After attending Kings Business School in Raleigh, she moved to Newport News, Virginia, and worked in the naval shipyards during World War II. In 1945, she married Hugh Willie Tart of Dunn and became a lifelong partner, working behind the scenes to support him, being active in their businesses and rearing their three children. She was a wonderful cook, who showed her love and caring for both her family and community through sharing food. Hugh Willie once said that he had worn out a set of tires delivering pound cakes to residents of Dunn.

Virginia was an active member at Stoney Run Church where she taught a children's Sunday School class for many years. She continued to support that class and even crocheted red toboggans for each child the last Christmas of her life.

She passionately cared for her family and raised them to be conscientious and kind citizens. She loved her extended family as well as Hugh Willie's. Many family members celebrated her 100th birthday with a joyful gathering at her home in October 2022.

Heartbroken after her youngest daughter, Anne, was killed coming home from East Carolina University one weekend in 1971, Virginia began taking lessons in china painting. Within a few years, she became an accomplished porcelain artist, studying under teachers from all over the United States. Many homes are still blessed with the ornate pieces of china that she produced. She would say that she did not sell her work, as many of her colleagues did, because nobody could ever pay her enough money for the effort that she put into it. In the 1980s to 1990s, she taught china painting at Johnston Community College and thoroughly enjoyed it. Virginia continued to enjoy painting china until she was 100 years old.

She also created beautiful needlework, sewing, smocking and crocheting. Her crocheted works ranged from delicate snowflake tree ornaments to toboggans, scarves, sweaters and afghans. At age 98, she created dozens of toboggans and scarves for children in need. In the last few months of her life, while under hospice care, she crocheted an afghan for her grandson. She was also known to occasionally play the guitar. In short, her hands were never idle.

Virginia Bass Tart was the daughter of the late Chester and Mary Page Bass. Her husband, Hugh Willie Tart, her daughter Anne Tart, her grandson Derrick Johnson, her brother Columbus "Red" Bass, and her sister, Grace Knowles, predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters, Gayle Tart Davis and husband Richard of Durham and Ruth Dare Tart Staples of Pembroke Pines, Florida; her grandchildren, Evan Davis and wife Erica of Chapel Hill, and Stuart Davis of Brooklyn, New York; and her great-grandchildren, Erika and Victoria Johnson of Pembroke Pines, Florida.

A celebration of Virginia's life will be held at Skinner and Smith Funeral Home at 905 Erwin Road in Dunn on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 2 p.m. Family will receive guests there one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at Devotional Gardens in Dunn.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Stoney Run Church, Dunn; Yates Baptist Church, Durham; or Durham Urban Ministries.
