Their passion for New York led them to stick with a planned 2001 trip that happened to be a few weeks after the 911 attack. | 2537 | The Berkshire Eagle, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Tuesday, 13 February 2024 Henry Bassett Holt 1929 - 2024 Henry Bassett Holt, 94, of Lee passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 20,1929, in New York City, to Elizabeth and Henry Holt. The year of his birth created many financial challenges for his parents as well as for the rest of the country. He was fortunate that his grandmother, Carolyn Bassett who lived in Lenox at what is now the Kimball Inn, saw to it that Henry was well educated. He attended Mohunk School in New York, Trinity School in New York City, and the Forman School in Litchfield Connecticut. It was at Forman that he met the love of his life, Mary Dey. His competition for her attention was tough, but he finally won her hand, and they were married on February 21, 1951 at the Central Presbyterian Church in Montclair NJ. They were together for 71 years until her death in 2022. Upon graduation from the Forman School, he was retained by the headmaster, John Forman, to continue at the school teaching English and became a house proctor at one of the school dormitories. During this time, John became a close friend and mentor to him, and Henry treasured their relationship. Henry and Mary left Forman School when they were expecting their first child. Henry next entered the insurance industry where he eventually handled large commercial accounts, including the Bronx Zoo, and the Catskill Game Farm. Colorful stories abound from his insurance career, including meetings with the mob, olives, latex, and giraffes. While rising to the position of executive vice president at a major insurance company in New York City, Henry began dabbling in fine art. On January 24, 1975, his employer asked him if he was going to sell art or sell insurance. He quit that day, and a week later sold a group of Antonio Jacobsen paintings, making more money from that one sale than he had made the previous year. He never looked back. The fine art career he started at the age 45 was good to both Mary and Henry. Henry built wonderful personal and professional relationships during his years in the art business, forging close ties with executives and directors of major museums, auction houses, and galleries. He maintained a spotless reputation in the business and was widely respected. Mary and Henry took pride in their personal art collection. Over the years, they acquired, sold, and donated major paintings by Norman Rockwell, Grandma Moses, James E, Bard, William Harnett, and an original Archibald Willard Spirit of '76. A first-time visitor to their home was almost always taken on the official tour. Henry loved Lee, Massachusetts and was proud to be a member of one of the town's founding families. He served on the board of the Norman Rockwell Museum during the transition from the Old Corner House to the new Rockwell Museum, the board of the William Munson Proctor Museum in Utica, NY, and the Berkshire Medical Center Patient Advisory Board. He was a 65 year Master Mason, past member of the Lenox Club, the Stockbridge Golf Club, and the Marching and Chowder Society. Henry loved nothing more than spending time with his family, and with his many friends that were like family to him. One of Henry's favorite things was his Thursday morning breakfast with the boys at Joe's Diner. Henry was a jokester, and Joe's was one of his favorite playgrounds. As his health and mobility declined, the highlight of Henry's day was his daily car ride with his sidekick son Derrick. They would take off for hours, revisiting Henry's places and exploring new ones. Henry will be remembered for his warm, loving, caring nature, and for his flashing, blinking smiley pins. He bought them by the hundreds and gave them out to everyone he met. It was his way of bringing a little happiness to others. If you have been a recipient of a Henry Holt smiley pin, please remember his kindness and pass that kindness along. Henry is survived by his daughter Carolyn and her husband Gary Miksch of Lewes, Delaware; his son Derrick and his wife Victoria Holt of Lenox and Lee, Massachusetts; grandchildren Danielle Miksch, Brandon (Kelly) Miksch, Andrew (Katherine) Holt, Sara (Jacob Conkle) Holt, Charles (fiancee Catherine Cherry) Holt; great-grandchildren Evan, Emma, Evie, Charlotte, and Arthur; and several nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves his faithful companion rescue dog Nena-Sora. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Henry Holt, and his sister Elizabeth Beal. There will be a viewing at Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street in Lenox, on Friday, February 16th, from 10:00 a.m. - Noon, followed by a graveside service with Father C.J. Waitekus at Fairmont Cemetery in Lee. A lunch reception will be held immediately following at St. Ann's Parish Center in Lenox. In lieu of flowers, donations in Henry's memory can be made to the Lee Historical Society, PO Box 170, Lee, MA 01238. | 2539 | The Biblical Recorder, Raleigh, North Carolina, June 21, 1855 Died Departed this life on the 23d May, 1855, after a protracted illness of about five or six months, bro. Jacob Bass of Chowan County, in the 49th year of his age ? having been a member of the Baptist Church at Rockahock about 22 years. He was a component member of the Church at its constitution in 1835. He leaved a wife and three children, together with a large circle of friends to mourn their loss although they mourn not as those which have no hope. True, bro. Bass had many trials as is common to mortal life, yet he seemed to bear them with Christian fortitude, his seat was seldom vacated at the house of God, where his name was enrolled ? but he is gone, we trust to that seat prepared for those that love and obey the Lord Jesus: Adieu to all things here below, My Saviour calls and I must go To the spirit land where Jesus dwells, I hope his praise forever swells. Adieu to things on earth combined, I hope by Saviour?s arms to find, In which to dwell forever more, An sing my sufferings all are over. J.B.W. | Bass, Jacob (I47050)

He has lived in Ohio thirty-five years, and in Toledo twenty-four years. He was educated in the public school and began life as a printer at the age of sixteen. He worked for a time in the mechanical department of the Toledo papers, and was telegraph editor of the Commercial for some time, and later became financially interested in a couple of county seat papers in Northwestern Ohio. Mr. Bassett was admitted to the bar in 1859, and the next year was appointed an assistant in the office of the city solicitor of Toledo, which position he held for four years. He is an active worker for the success of the Republican party, being a member of the County Executive Committee several times, and believes in fair play in politics as in everything else. He is one of the charter members of the Lincoln Club, and to that organization has devoted much of his time. Mr. Bassett is a member of Sanford L. Collins Lodge, No. 396, F. & A.M., of Toledo. February 21, 1933 Judge Bassett Wed 50 Years Jurist and Wife Observe Golden Anniversary Tuesday (Picture of Judge and Mrs. George Bassett included in article) Judge and Mrs. George A. Bassett Tuesday celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their home, 318 Islington street, with several members of their immediate family and friends present. Married in 1883 to Elizabeth J. Brinkerhoff of Tiffin, the judge recalled with a chuckle that the famous flood of ?83 here threatened to postpone his wedding, scheduled for the farm residence of his bride. Finally, with his future brother-in-law, Robert Brinkerhoff, father of the famed cartoonist, he was taken across the raging Maume in a tug late at night, the flood having torn two spans form the old Cherry street bridge. Judge Bassett was born in Perrysburg, where he worked on the old Journal. Coming to Toledo in 1880, he was with the old Morning Commercial, now the Times, for two years. He studied shorthand and became a court reporter. He began a study of law, was admitted to the bar in 1895 and served in the state legislature from 1903 to 1908. Then he was appointed a judge of the common pleas court here by the late Governor Harris and served two years. He still practices law and has offices at 918 Board of Trade building. Judge and Mrs. Bassett have three children, Mrs. Ada Hoffmeister of Fall River, Mass.; Mrs Herman Ereausquin of Toledo, and George of Los Angeles, All except one of five grandchildren are here for the anniversary. He was married 63 years to the former Elizabeth J. Brinkerhoff, who survives him. The marriage took place in 1883 on the farm residence of his bride in Tiffin, O., after Mr. Bassett braved the famous flood of that year to go from Toledo to the ceremony. Brinkerhoff, father of Robert Brinkerhoff, New York cartoonist. Wild Pigeon Hunter Mr. Bassett?s most vivid recollections of his youth were the wild pigeon hunts he and his Uncle William conducted in Wood County in 1872-3. May 31, 2021 Catherine "Cathy" (Bassett) Verbosky passed away on May 31, 2021 at St Vincent's Hospital following complications from a stroke. She died peacefully surrounded by her husband, Bill, and loving family. She was 65. Cathy was born in Adrian, Michigan on June 21, 1955 to Farris and Clemence Bassett. She grew up in Blissfield, Michigan and graduated from Blissfield High School in 1973. Cathy and Bill were together for 20 years and married for 16 years. Cathy retired from the Meijer store in Rossford in October of last year. She, and her husband Bill, own Billy V's Bar in Rossford. Cathy was an avid Michigan Wolverine fan all her life and enjoyed Michigan hockey, girls' softball, men's basketball and men's football. "She always had a ritual before each Wolverine football game of dressing in her Michigan clothes and shoes" said her husband, Bill. If she passed anyone that was wearing Michigan garb, she would always say "Go Blue!". Ironically, Bill is a true Buckeye fan and they always joked as to who was on the wrong side of the sport. Cathy had a strong passion for crafting. She painted plaques, made lighthouses out of clay pots and painted all sorts of wooden items, generally in Michigan or Ohio State colors. Bill would lament that she sold them too cheaply. But she just loved to paint and have her crafts give joy to others. Cathy loved her children, Patrick and Danielle, and grandson, Breydon, and had hoped to spend more time with them since retiring. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Stanley Brooks. She is survived by her loving husband, Bill; daughter, Danielle Heban; son, Patrick Borucki; grandson, Breydon Siler; sister, Cynthia Brooks; brother, Michael (Pam) Bassett; aunts, Rosie Christian and Carolyn Sadd; and uncle, Charlie (Layla) Thabet; sisters-in-law, Mary Kay (Mike) Scott, Susan (Gary) Yoder; brother in law, Jim (Karen) Verbosky; and mother-in-law, Steffie Verbosky; nephews, Chris Bassett, Jon Bassett, Nikolas Verbosky, Patrick (Alison) Yoder, Ben Yoder and Michael Scott; nieces, Kristina Yoder, Maria Scott, and Abby Verbosky; along with many cousins. Among the many friends she leaves behind are; Debbie, Tina, Michelle, Laura, Sandy, the girls at Billy V's Bar and friends from Meijer. The family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff at St. Vincent Hospital for all of their support and care during Cathy's stay. Cathy wanted to donate her organs but was unable to, due to a previous breast cancer surgery. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sujkowski Walker Funeral Home in Rossford. Visitation will continue at All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford, on Monday, June 7, at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Ft. Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg.
