He had a penchant for questionable facial hair, and a penchant for using words like penchant. In addition to his parents and sister, he is remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, a goddaughter, and friends. His passing has left a void in our hearts. | 2454 | Stehn Family Chapels, Oregon Richard K. Bass February 11, 1930 ? November 16, 2022 A Life of Service If anyone can describe his life, it would be one of service. He served in the Navy as a radioman in the Korean War. He continued with his love of radio first with the Oregon State Police and then with Clackamas County. While at Clackamas County, he designed the County?s first 911 call and dispatch center. Creating a disaster response plan for the County was his way to help others. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge through consulting and teaching with the California Maritime Academy and Clatsop Community College. He was an author of a book on maritime distress and safety radio systems. Even in retirement, he was actively involved with the Red Cross Disaster Relief and FEMA. Radio wasn?t just a job, it was also a hobby. He was very active in amateur (ham) radio. He was part of the disaster response team for Providence Milwaukie Hospital. No one enjoyed travel more than Dick. He courted Mary, his wife of 63 years, with trips to the Oregon Coast. Long trips or short, he enjoyed the drive and conducting ?nickel tours.? A passion for milkshakes marked the goal of any trip. Serving as a relief radio officer in the Merchant Marine, just provided new places he and Mary would explore. He was very active in his church both as a reader and in preparing meals for the poor. Both he and Mary volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul, creating a client database. | 2476 | Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary Robert Lee Bass November 4, 1949 ? August 17, 2021 Robert ?Bob? Bass was one of eleven children born on November 4, 1949 in Merced, California to Elisha P. Bass Junior and Mima Lucille Bass. When Bob was in his teen years, the family moved to Northern California. They settled in the Bayliss Area with the Jantzen family, who owned Glenn House Movers, where his dad worked for many years. As a teenager, living in Bayliss, Bob worked for neighboring farmers and eventually worked with his father as a house mover. This is when he got the nickname of ?Rough Rider?; as the house was being towed down the street he would walk on the ridge of the roof carrying the hot wires with a stick. After a fire destroyed the Bass home in Bayliss, the family then moved to Hamilton City where the Mennonite Community helped build a house for the family on Sacramento Avenue. Bob attended Hamilton High School where he made lifelong friendships with his many classmates. He was an all-star athlete and Bob even went to state finals for wrestling. When it came to football, his classmates commented on how people hated to play against him because he was one of those ?Bass boys? and quite the opponent on the grid iron. His biggest fan was his dad, whose whooping and hollering at the sidelines could be heard all over Hamilton City. Bob graduated from Hamilton High School in 1968 and was named ?Athlete of the Year.? Bob was always a hard worker and, in the summer, he earned money for college by bucking hay near San Jose. As a Butte College student, he continued his love for sports by playing on the football team and was also a part of the rodeo team. And anyone who knew anything about Bob, also knew of his love for his favorite horse, LeRoy! After Butte College, Bob became a fulltime worker and was hired as a welder and foreman at Matthews Conveyor (later called Rexnord). He worked at Rexnord in Chico for 16 years and mastered the craft of welding. He became so good, he customized his own BBQ grills. His BBQ and BBQ sauce were beyond compare and always in high demand (and he NEVER shared his BBQ sauce recipe)! Bob was a sought-after grill master for company BBQ?s, family Sunday gatherings, various fundraisers and the yearly family reunions held in Merced. Bob loved to hunt anything with four legs and could always be heard on his C.B. radio, answering to his handle ?Rough Rider?. For many years, he was an active member of the Northern California Houndsmen Association advocating for hunters? rights. He never missed a hunting season, which often turned into week long family vacations. Family members would come from all over California to join in on these hunting trips in the beautiful mountains near the Oregon border. Bob never missed a shot and was always the first in camp to get his deer. He was also a renowned bear hunter and would always have a lively tale of his dangerous adventures. To celebrate his hunting win, Bob would drive through Hamilton City with the bear on the back of his truck. The children in town would excitedly follow behind the truck, like a parade ? a memorable experience that is still talked about to this very day. Bob passed into the loving arms of Our Savior on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Enloe Hospital. Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 51 years. Bob and Barbara have seven children, Lorraine, Lanaya (Jabari), Robert (Patricia), Laura (Robbie), Laurita (Anthony), Elisha (Irina) and Joseph. There are 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He also is survived by his sisters Angela Bass and Gloria Bass of Hamilton City, and Mima Jones of Lathrop, CA. Surviving brothers are Glenn Brown of Fresno, CA, Charles Brown of Atwater, CA, and Burnice Bass of Hamilton City. Bob was preceded in death by his dear parents Elisha and Mima Bass, his sisters Pat Brown and Lavinia Bass, brothers Thomas Brown and Anthony Bass, nephew Jesus Mundo and niece Sheila Whitlock. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, and hunting buddies who loved him dearly. Bob had a larger than life personality! We are fortunate that he was part of our lives. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten! The family wishes to thank those nurses at Enloe who cared for him so well and all the family and friends that passed on their prayers and condolences. A viewing will take place on Friday, September 3rd from 6-8 pm at Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary in Orland, CA. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Orland Cemetery on Saturday, September at 11 am. Anyone wishing to assist the Bass Family with memorial services can make contributions to the Sweet-Olson Family Mortuary, 825 A St. Orland, CA 95963. | Bass, Robert Lee (I33)

| 2484 | Tampa Bay Times, Florida, 1 January 2000 Albert S. Bass Jr. Albert S. "Al" Bass Jr., a retired Times production manager, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at home under hospice care. He was 73. Mr. Bass had battled leukemia for the past six years and was recently in remission, according to his daughter, Nancy Bedy. He retired in 1981 after 35 years with the Times, the last six as downtown production manager. Mr. Bass was born in Columbia, Pa. He moved to Florida and graduated from Winter Haven High School. During World War II, he served in the Army as a demolitions specialist in the 11th Airborne Division. He returned to Florida as a machinist, then opted for a career change. While carrying a Times delivery route in St. Petersburg, he applied for a job as a copy boy at the newspaper. He was hired _ as a sports writer. Soon he moved to the city desk, became night city editor a couple of nights each week and was promoted to makeup editor, the news department representative in the composing room. Two months later, when he had been on the staff four years, he was offered the job of composing foreman. He took it. In the foreman's post, he helped the Times move from the use of Linotype machines and hot lead to paste-up artists and "cold type" produced on paper. A longtime family friend and former co-worker, John Parker, described Mr. Bass as "a man of very fine character, a great supervisor and a great friend, just a wonderful human being who was always upbeat and had a good attitude." In his spare time, Mr. Bass kept a garden and grew orchids. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed underwater spear fishing. Being on the water, he once said, proved restful during the days of hot type in the composing room. "The noise can't be likened to anything else," he said in 1979. "Nearing deadlines, the tempo of activity increased, and so did the cacophony. Saws, material makers, linecasters, proof presses and miter saws made so much noise we had to shout to be heard over them. "The noise, the shouting, the smell of ink and of oil burning in the machines gave it a very frenetic pace." The advent of news photo composition _ cold type _ brought quiet to the composing room, he said, although the new system produced pages faster. Mr. Bass was married in 1948 to the former Joan "Jo" Weil of St. Petersburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Becker Courtot and Peri Raveling, both of Tarpon Springs, and Nancy Bedy, Seminole; a son, Spencer, Seminole; and six grandchildren. The family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast or the Leukemia Society. A wake service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the home of Mrs. Albert S. Bass Jr., 3864 Sunrise Lane, Tarpon Springs. _ Information from Times files was used in the obituary. | Bass, Albert Spencer Jr. (I24)
