| 2265 | Riemann Family Funeral Homes Hubert Dale ?Sam? Bass June 23, 1931 ? July 13, 2019 Hubert Dale "Sam" Bass, EOCS, USN, RET passed away on July 13, 2019 at the age of 88 years old. He loved God, his family, and his country. Born June 23, 1931 in Goldsboro, NC to Benjamin Hubert and Lydia Jones Bass, Sam grew up working on his family's dairy farm alongside his five siblings. It was there that he developed the earnest and determined work ethic that would carry him through his life. On St. Patrick's Day 1952, Sam went on a blind date with a young Edenton lady named Peggy Ann Pollard. The two fell in love and "Earth Angel" would be "their song" for the next 67 years. Sam and Peggy married in 1955 and would go on to have six beautiful daughters. In 1953, Sam's distinguished 26-year military career began when he was drafted into the Army on April 20. He fought in the Korean War and was discharged in March 1955. Upon returning home from Korea, Sam was inspired to enlist in the Navy after seeing John Wayne star in the film "The Fighting Seabees". The film introduced Sam and many others at the time to the new naval branch after which the movie was named. (Peggy was and remains an avid John Wayne fan to this day.) As a heavy equipment operator in the Navy, Sam traveled the world building roads and bridges in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He was an expert marksman on the M16 rifle and 45 caliber pistol, and served as an instructor for the CATM combat arms training course. Additionally, he volunteered for a special duty assignment as a Navy recruiter. In 1969, Sam was deployed to Vietnam. There, he formed bonds with men whose names he would never forget and whose stories he would go on to share regularly with his grandchildren decades later. His proudest military accomplishment was serving on the Presidential Detail at Camp David under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Sam received a Presidential Service Award for his time there. Sam retired from the Navy in 1979 from NMCB 62 (Gulfport). He settled his family in Gloucester, VA where he resided for 38 years. His second career was as a Fleet Safety Director at Smithfield Foods Inc. where he increased the company's safety and driving record. He retired after 14 years. As a father, he exemplified integrity and loyalty. He found "teaching moments" for his girls in life's everyday routine. Always an avid gardener, later in life Sam shared this hobby with his young grandchildren. Carolina BBQ and Reese's Cups were two of his favorite things. He loved taking his FORD pickup truck for long drives on country roads with his beloved dog, playing the lotto, and listening to George Jones. Ask any of Sam's children or grandchildren what motto he lived his life by, and they will give you one resounding answer, the Seabee saying: CAN DO. When other people think of Sam, they often describe him with the words "mentor" and "hero." Sam is predeceased by his infant daughter, Joy Levonne Bass. His parents Benjamin and Lydia Bass. His siblings Mary Hunt (Bob), Mildred Johnson (Neil), Robert Bass (Mozelle), Carole Woodard (Milton), Annie Laurie Mandelin (Chuck), and Claiborne Bass. Sam is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Peggy the "best Seabee wife" and his daughters Anita Kay Gardner (Michael), Peggy "Darlene" Cruthirds (Mark), Winifred "Dale" Bass (MSgt, USAF, Ret), Lydia Bass Fuller (James), Cheryl Bass LeMasters (David). Sam is also survived by his grandchildren Stephanie Nicole Cruthirds-Melancon (Jennifer), Toni Anne Cruthirds (Josiah Urban), Troy "Deg" Alexander Fuller, Jessica Ann Fuller, Meredith Grace LeMasters, Hugh Michael LeMasters, and great-grandchild Benjamin "Fischer" Cruthirds-Melancon. Sam is also survived by loving numerous nieces and nephews in North Carolina, and his beloved rescue beagle, Misty. The family would also like to thank the staffs of Memorial Hospital and Deaconess Health Care for caring for him; and a special thank you to the Niagara Wing at the Biloxi Veterans Administration where Sam spent his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation or your local humane society. A graveside service with full military honors rendered by the United States Navy will be on Friday, July 19th at 2:30pm at the Biloxi National Cemetery. | 2266 | Riemann Family Funeral Homes In Memory of Robert Earl ?Bobby? Bass Thursday, April 26, 2012 Robert E. "Bobby" Bass died peacefully at his home early Thursday morning with his family at his side, following his lengthy, hard-fought battle against cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Oswald "P. O." Bass and Inez Elizabeth Rose Bass, and his brother, Phillip J. "J. P." Bass. Bobby is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marguerite Stephanie Welch Bass; his five sons, Robert, Jr. (Becky), David (Joretta), John (Sharon), Steven (Susan), and James; eight grandchildren, Bob, Stephanie, Brent, Tanner, Phillip, Kyle, Derek, and Ryan. Bobby was a native of Gulfport, graduating from St. John High School in 1952. After getting married in 1953, he and his wife, Stephanie, eventually settled in Long Beach, the town his great grandmother, Elevine Bass, made home in the 1870s, for his grandfather, Wade, and his grandfather's brothers, Mount and Will, and sister, Elizabeth. Bobby worked his entire 43-year career in the dredging industry, hiring on with Standard Dredging Company as an Oiler in the engine room of the Dredge "Diesel" in 1953. Bobby remained on the "Diesel" for the better part of three decades, rising to the level of Chief Engineer, even as the dredge was transferred from Standard Dredging to Williams-McWilliams Dredging to its final owner, T. L. James Dredging of New Orleans, Louisiana. During his tenure with T. L. James, Bobby with regret left the "Diesel" to become one of two Port Chiefs with the company, responsible for the engine room activities of half its dredging fleet. His heart remained with the "Diesel" however and one of his prized possessions was the large scale model of the dredge his sons presented him upon his retirement. After retiring, Bobby remained active with numerous renovation projects around the house and extensive travel throughout the United States, Canada, and Ireland. He had a natural talent for woodworking, building beautiful pieces of furniture and cabinetry from no more than a rough, hand sketch direct from his mind's eye. He loved to watch football, particularly his New Orleans Saints and any of the area college football teams as his children and grandchildren attended most of them. Bobby loved his family and was happiest when he had them around him. He enjoyed working with his sons on projects at their own homes. Bobby was a good Catholic, spending most of his adult life as a parishioner of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach, although he had an affinity for a 4PM Mass offered anywhere close by. The family thanks Paul Cook, Lisa Bisette, and Richard Spratley of Odyssey Hospice for the considerate and loving care they extended to Bobby during his final difficult weeks of illness. Also in their thoughts are Dr. Edwin Davidson and his staff, especially Judy Douglas, Dr. Ron Brown, and the exceptional staff of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 28, at Noon at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Long Beach with a visitation for family and friends beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Cancer Society, 417 Security Square, Gulfport, MS 39507, or to St. Thomas Catholic Church, P. O. Box 1529, Long Beach, MS 39560. The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Long Beach, is in charge of arrangements. | Bass, Robert Earl (I119)

| 2267 | Riemann Family Funeral Homes Peggy Ann (Pollard) Bass (Picture included) August 2, 1936 ? March 18, 2020 Peggy Ann Pollard Bass passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, March 18 at the age of 83. She left this Earth peacefully at home surrounded by 2 of her loving daughters. Peggy was born August 2, 1936 in the seaside village of Edenton, NC on the heels of the Great Depression. She was the 4th of 5 daughters. Her mother died during childbirth when Peggy was one year old, leaving her Papa to raise his daughters alone. She loved to tell stories about adventures with her sisters, living on a houseboat and fishing with her Papa. Her early life in Edenton would mold and shape her into the resilient, kind person she would become. A deeply spiritual woman, Peggy lived her life in faith and grace. She had an unwavering belief in God, which has become the legacy that she leaves her family. She found good in every person and circumstance, and she had a deep love for all people and animals. Peggy moved to Goldsboro, NC during High School. Quiet and shy, she told stories of being encouraged by her 10th grade speech teacher, who helped build her confidence. (The teacher she would nonchalantly mention went on to become an actor: Andy Griffith!) During High School, Peggy went on a blind date with a young man named Hubert Bass, whom she married in 1955. Together they had 6 daughters. Hubert would make his career as a Navy Seabee, and he often praised Peggy for being the ?best Seabee wife? a guy could have. She never complained about constant relocations or being left alone to tend to the girls during his long deployments. During his absence Peggy was the backbone and source of strength of the family. She provided a nurturing, loving home instilling independence, kindness, and faith in her girls. Peggy went on to be a major presence in the lives of her grandchildren. They loved thrift store trips and eating ice cream for breakfast in a special wooden bowl. She was also curious, mischievous, and a wonderful storyteller. She loved all things pink, Betty Boop and Lucille Ball, and John Wayne and the Golden Girls. She spent the past ten years in Long Beach, Mississippi, where one of her favorite pastimes was visiting the Long Beach Senior Citizen Activity Center. At the center, Peggy was introduced to painting and ceramics at the age of 77, which she took to and produced numerous pieces for her children and grandchildren. There, she also developed strong bonds with women whom she remained close with even when she could no longer visit the center. And she won many games of bingo! Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Dale Bass; their infant daughter, Joy Levonne Bass; her parents, Charles Myrtles Pollard and Elma Spruill Pollard; her sisters, Ruth Bowyer, Mary Robinson, Jeanette Brown, and Connie Pollard who died at birth. She is survived by her daughters, Anita Kay Gardner (Michael), Peggy "Darlene" Cruthirds (Mark), Winifred "Dale" Bass (MSgt, USAF, Ret), Lydia Bass Fuller (James), and Cheryl Bass LeMasters (David). Peggy is also survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie Nicole Cruthirds-Melancon (Jennifer), Toni Anne Cruthirds (Josiah Urban), Troy Deg Singh Fuller, Jessica Ann Fuller, Meredith Grace LeMasters, and Hugh Michael LeMasters; a great-grandchild, Benjamin "Fischer" Cruthirds-Melancon; and she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in North Carolina, and her beloved cat, Yogi. The family would like to thank her amazing team from Deaconess Home Health in addition to her team from Southern Care Hospice, especially Chris Radix and Tiffany Edwards. Just as Peggy was born in a tumultuous time, she departed the world during a global pandemic. Because of this, there cannot be a public service. She would say ?that?s ok, tomorrow will be a better day? so with that spirit the family will host a public Celebration of Life Memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Peggy would want you to take care of one another during this uncertain time. Check on your neighbor, feed stray animals, and continue to spread love. The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Long Beach, is serving the family and online condolences may be offered at www.riemannfamily.com. | Pollard, Peggy Ann (I61023)

| 2284 | Rocky Mount Telegram, North Carolina, Friday, April 14, 2017 Frances Eloise Leonard Bass Frances Eloise Leonard Bass, also known as Mama and Mema, passed away on April 12th, 2017. She was born October 8, 1926 to Charlie and Lillie Leonard of Franklin County. She is reunited with her husband, Larry Dozier Bass, who left us in 1985. She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Sydney Carol Bass Brooks, and brothers, Bob and Freddie Leonard. Eloise grew up on a farm on Highway 56 in Franklin County. She graduated from Edward Best High School and attended Louisburg College. She left there for Nashville, NC, to work with the Davenport Law Firm as a legal assistant. In 1947 she married Larry D. Bass of Momeyer, NC. She eventually left her professional job and started a family with Larry and worked alongside him and his family at Bass Brothers helping make that a successful business. She also assisted with the family farm and all the requirements of country living. Eloise had a great business and parliamentary mind and used her many talents to take on volunteer opportunities in her church and community. Being a member of Momeyer Baptist Church was something she truly cherished. She filled positions there such as Church Clerk, Sunday School Teacher, Bible School volunteer and Director of Womens Missionary Union (WMU). She served on various committees but seemed most proud being a part of the Building Committee which oversaw the construction of a new church building in 1978. She loved attending Senior Citizens luncheons, meetings and traveling with this fun group of friends and spent a lot of time visiting shut-ins and delivering sermon tapes. She supported the Baptist Mens Disaster Relief by heeding the call to help feed victims of hurricanes and disasters in North Carolina and abroad. Eloise was enthusiastic about missions and on multiple occasions traveled with the church mission team to help other communities through service projects. She served as the Associational Director of WMU for the North Roanoke Baptist Association for many years and spoke of how this experience had helped her grow in her faith. In her community Eloise supported the Momeyer Ruritan Club by assisting with their bi-annual BBQ Chicken Supper fundraisers. Additionally, she was always willing to help raise money for charities and causes she was passionate about. In the 1960s and 1970s she was active with the Nash County Democratic Women and TeenDem Organizations. Most recently she proudly served on the Momeyer Town Council from the time Momeyer was Incorporated in 1991 until 2013 when she retired and was honored for her dedication and service to the town. Eloise loved to have a good time. In her twenties, she became a member of The 13 Club in Nashville and always looked forward to playing Bridge with these great friends. She last attended the club in the spring of 2016 and truly missed the girls. After retirement, she enjoyed her Red Hat group and their many outings. Eloise was an accomplished cook, gardener and canner. Her homemade cucumber pickles were delicious and made her chicken salad, potato salad and deviled eggs the best around town. So, it is no surprise that cooking for the people she loved the most brought her the greatest joy. She delighted in looking on as family gathered at her home in Momeyer for Sunday lunch and holiday celebrations. Yearly summer trips to Holden Beach, NC, were greatly anticipated with all of Mamas goodies at hand, especially her pimento cheese and chocolate chip cookies. Her favorite thing to do at the beach was sit on the porch, reading and watching her family enjoy the sand and surf and grow with each passing year. She leaves behind to cherish in memory her son Leon Bass of Momeyer; daughter Brenda Bass Pace and husband, Ronnie of Momeyer; daughter Ellen Bass Stephenson and husband, Tom of Wake Forest. Seven Grandchildren: Kelly Brown Butler and husband, Brent; Patrick Pace and wife, Erin; Ashley Pace and wife, Kim; Daniel Pace, Mary Brooks, Will Stephenson and Hunter Stephenson. Eight Great-Grandchildren: Sydney, Jennings, Ezri, Tully, Theo, Morgan, Aubrey, Henry and Baby Pace due in May. Her sister and brother-in-law, Lucy Leonard Colbert and husband, Pete of Franklinton; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Estelle Bass Matthews and husband, James William of Momeyer and Paul G. Bass and wife, Sue of Momeyer; Carolyn, Justin and Lindsey Bass and a host of nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Mariah Hooper and Wilhemina Robinson for helping provide such wonderful care to Eloise during her illness. It takes special people to show such compassion and love through tough times. We also thank Nash Hospice: Lynn Bradshaw, RN; Dr. Boyette and the entire staff who helped make the end of our Mamas life as comfortable as possible. | 2295 | Rose Funeral & Cremation ? Mann ? 10 August 2023 Patricia Ann Bass Christenberry Patricia Ann Bass Christenberry passed peacefully into the presence of God on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. Pat was born, with a beautiful eyes and the innate ability to spread a blanket of love around everyone at every occasion, in McRae, Georgia, on May 7, 1948. She was welcomed by her parents, Donald T. Bass and Frances Lorene Beasley Bass, both deceased. Pat was "Big Sis" to four younger sisters, an athletic tomboy, while still being a "Miss Goody-Two-Shoes." As a teen, Pat loved nice clothes and jewelry and was willing to earn these items with hard work. Pat earned a scholarship to Mercer University's Nursing Program, and went on to work at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta. It was there an older surgeon urged a younger intern to ask out the scrub nurse with the "bedroom eyes." Eight months later, Pat married this intern, from Knoxville. This partnership of helpmates lasted over fifty-two years, producing two devoted daughters and six grandchildren of deep faith and strong character. Pat will be remembered as an individual of strength, intelligence, and immense grace. Her emotional intuition, uncanny judge of character, loyalty, along with a modest background, drew people to her. She knew the life stories of many strangers because she really listened and really cared. To be loved by Pat Christenberry, was to be loved fiercely. You never stood alone. Pat is left to be emulated, loved, and missed by her partner and husband, Ken W. Christenberry, MD; Her two, very blessed daughters, who "are not a comedy act" though they beg to differ, Meredith (Pat's buddy, Brad) Kuester, and Allison "Paige" Moncier; Her "Little Sis's" Brenda (Bill) Smith of Martin, Georgia, Donna (Everett) Hemphill of Byron, GA, and Dianne (Mike) Greene of Byron, GA, as well as Gwen (Sam) Stafford, who preceded her in death; Her much adored grandchildren, Brady, Graham, and Mac Kuester and William McHenry, Khaki and Jed Moncier, who loved their CC and always give them a soft place to land; As well as a long and diverse army of real friends, who have wrapped us all in a blanket of love and prayers. We have felt every one. Our prayer to all, who read this, will have a gift and being loved by such a strong, heroic, devoted person in their lifetime, as we were. Services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023, 3:30pm, in the chapel at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, with receiving a friend to follow immediately and Barron Hall. | 2296 | Rose-Neath Funeral Home ? Southside ? Shreveport ? 23 February 2023 John Wayne Bass Sr. John Wayne Bass, Sr., 78, of Shreveport, Louisiana entered into eternal rest on February 20, 2023. John was born on November 7, 1944, in Bossier City, Louisiana to George W. and Omie Friday Bass. A visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. with funeral services to follow at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023 located at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana 71118. Officiating the service will be Bro. Randy Johnson. Interment will be held at Zion Rest Cemetery in Pelican, Louisiana. From a young age, John loved to fish and hunt every creature with his sidekick, nephew, partner in fishing and hunting crime, Don Dillman. The two were connected at the hip with a bond that lasted a lifetime through the good times and bad. They were there for each other, closer than nephew and uncle relationship, they were best of friends, brothers. John cherished the moments he was able to take his own children and grandchildren fishing and hunting. John Sr. was blessed with two sons, Alan and John Jr, and one stepson, Kris Griffin, which he spent many days in freezing cold water duck hunting or in a boat fishing. While the girls, daughter, Shawn and stepdaughter, Kelly, stayed warm and cozy at home. He was also known to take the little grandboys on weekend hunting and fishing trips, so they learned to fish and hunt like PAPA. He was a man that loved to spend time with those he loved. Through the years John was a man that would give of his time and money to help his family and friends when they were in need. He was also one that knew how to have a good time by taking the family on beach trips, Disney adventures, camping, skiing, hiking, and whatever adventure he could find in order to spend time with his family. These trips always included lots of good food and campfires. Another title that was held dear by him was coach, ?bus driver.? He meant the world to many young boys that he taught the game of baseball. He was a winning coach and he influenced many through the years of coaching John Jr.?s baseball teams then coaching Kris Griffin?s teams after meeting Debra Wilson through the Dixie baseball. He was known to take us all to the ball field for practice on non-practice days after his kids would ask him for extra practice. He would give whatever he had to provide for us even when it cost him his time and his own wants, but you better be ready to run to get him his Blue Bell Ice Cream when he ran out for his before bedtime bowl of ice cream snack. After meeting and marrying Debra, he gained two more children, Kris and Kelly, which also loved sports. What a great fit, John and Debra! They loved to travel, camp, hike, and river rafting. No hike was too much for him to conquer. Many times, he and the children would race the Abraham?s Fall hike to see who could get there first. I think the girl won every time, Kelly HAHAHA! She was always a handful for him. After retiring, John and Debra fell in love with the Great Smoky Mountains. They traveled there often to see all of the sights from hiking the two-day hike to Mt. Le?Conte, eventually settling and moving the camper to a retirement community on a river in the Great Smoky Mountains. Where you guessed it, he would fish for trout and tube down the river. Again, finding time for the kids and grandkids to come visit and enjoy good food and tubing down the river. Besides his title of husband to Debra Wilson Bass for 33 years, the love of his life, he was a daddy and Pop to his children. He cherished being called PAPA by his grandchildren. Fish on PAPA. Preceding John in death were his parents, George W. and Omie Friday Bass; siblings, Jane Crank, George W. Bass, Jr., Marge Wall, Albert Bass, Mary Moffett, Betty Call; nephew, Joey Dillman; and grandson, Dalton Bass. He is survived by his children, Alan Bass and wife, Lisa, John Bass, Jr., Shawn Bass, Kris Griffin and wife, Christy, and Kelly Griffin; 18 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Don Dillman. Honoring John as pallbearers will be Alan Bass, John Bass, Jr., Kris Griffin, Cody Griffin, Kevin McCarty, and Chris McMellon. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Don Dillman. | Bass, John Wayne (I58233)
