In Society

One of the prettiest and happiest weddings that has occurred in Memphis was that of Miss Carrie E. Bassett and Mr. W.E. Barnes at Calvary Church at 5:30 o?clock last evening. It attracted a large number of relatives and friends of the couple and their respective families. While Prof. C.P. Winkler performed a favorite wedding march on the grand organ, the bridal party, excepting the groom, proceeded up the main aisle of the church to the altar, the following gentlemen as ushers leading: Messrs. H.A. Ramsey, Philip Yancey, C.R. Barbee and J.L. Thompson. Then came the charming and beautifully attired bride leaning upon the arm of her uncle, Mr. Robert Lockwood. The groom emerged from the vestry room to meet the bride at the altar, attended by Mr. W. G. Thomas as best man and preceded W.G. Thomas as best man and preceded by Rev. Drs. Dumbell and Davenport, who officiated in the marriage ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony the couple were driven to the depot and left for a tour of the West, followed by a great volume of the sincerest good wishes.
The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. Geroge T. Bassett, and is a young lady of many and pronounced charms, a reigning favorite in social circles. Mr. Barnes is a young man of excellent business standing and worth, possessing to a large degree those sturdy habits and recognized abilities which accomplish prosperity in his every undertaking.

Found Dead
A Wealthy Lumber Merchant of Memphis Expires in the Woods
The Corpse of Mr. George Bassett, Who Had Been Missing Three Days, Is Found
Special to the Banner.

MEMPHIS, July 6.-Monday morning George T. Bassett, a wealthy lumber merchant of this city, drove from his home in a buggy to go up town and did not return. His disappearance was advertised and the police were notified. Last night his death body was found ten miles south of here. He was lying on his back under a bush, a handkerchief over his breast and his coat hanging on a fence, as though he had lain in the shade to rest. The horse and buggy stood beside him, the animal being thin, as though it had not been fed. Mr. Bassett had been ill for a month and showed signs of mental aberration. It is supposed he spent the three days aimlessly driving about the woods, exposed to the storm of Monday, the heat and without for or shelter.

The Memphis Commercial, Tennessee, Thursday, 6 July 1893
Solved Only In Death
Was the Mystery of Mr. George T. Bassett?s Disappearance
His Dead Body Found South of the City Last Night
With His Horse and Buggy Beside It.

Solved in death is the mystery disappearance of Mr. George T. Bassett.
His dead body was found at Frayzer?s farm, known as Magnolia farm, about twelve miles south of the city, on the Horn Lake road, last night about 6 o?clock.
On Monday morning Mr. Bassett left his home, 123 Fifth street, Chelsea, in his buggy and was seen no more in life. He had been ill for a month and his family feared he had driven aimlessly away while suffering from a temporary aberration of intellect, or that perhaps he had been waylaid, robbed and foully dealt with, as he had $50 or $60 on his person.
The former theory is apparently the correct one. Where the unfortunate gentleman spent all of Monday, Tuesday, and yesterday is not known, nor how long the body had lain before it was found, but it is probable that it could have escaped observation many hours, since his horse and buggy stood close to the corpse.
The body lay in an old field under a bush. There had been no violence, and the position and the surroundings indicated that the deceased had lain down to rest in the shade, when the summons came. His coat was found hanging on the fence, the body was lying on its back, with a handkerchief on the breast, and death had apparently come painlessly while he slept.
The strange feature of the affair is that the deceased should have remained undiscovered for three days in such close proximity to the city in a fairly well settled section, and when his disappearance had been so widely advertised. He probably stayed in the woods, or in little frequented lanes, and what the privation and exposure to the weather he suffered may may never be known.
The news did not reach the city until 2:45 o?clock this morning. The reason of this long delay was that the man who found the remains walked all the way to the city, to the corner of Main and Iowa avenue, from which place he telephoned to the police station. Capt. Hackett on receipt of the news, at once procured a buggy, and carried the sad news to the bereaved family.
Mr. Bassett was an old and esteemed citizen of Memphis. For many years he was in the lumber business, having been a member of the firm of Moore & Bassett, Bassett & Clagg, Williams & Co, and other firms. He leaves a widow and several children to mourn his loss.

GOODSPEED'S HISTORY OF HAMILTON, KNOX AND SHELBY COUNTIES OF TENNESSEE
(1887)

G.T. Bassett, secretary and treasurer of the Cole Manufacturing
Company, came to Memphis in 1857 and engaged in the lumber business until the
commencement of the war. He was connected with Baxter & Rose. In 1861 he
enlisted in the One Hundred and Fifty-fourth Senior Tennessee Regiment,
Confederate States Army, and served with credit until the cessation of
hostilities, when he returned to Memphis and accepted a clerkship with M.E.
and J.W. Cochran in the lumber trade, and continued until 1870 and then became
agent for the Memphis Wood-words Manufacturing Company, but quit in 1874 when
that company was burned out. January 1, 1875, he formed a partnership with
C.B. Moore, under the style of Moore, Bassett & Co., which partnership expired
January 1, 1880, when a connection was formed with the Cole Manufacturi
Company, which still continues. Our subject was born February 5, 183
Delaware County, N.Y., and is one of a family of fifteen children of Cornelius
and Elizabeth (Cushing) Bassett, the mother being a niece of Hon. Caleb
Cushing. They were married at Schenectady, N.Y. The father was a participant
in the battles on the lakes during the war of 1812, and was a member of the
State Legislature in 1836-37. He died in 1864 and lies buried in the sa
cemetery as Washington Irving. The mother died when our subject was a child.
The latter graduated at Columbia College, New York, in 1854, and was for a short
time engaged in the grain trade in the Upper Mississippi Valley. July 3, 1866,
he married Miss Lucretia Lockwood, a native of Iowa, and to these paren
eight children have been born, one son and two daughters still living. Mr.
Bassett is a Democrat, and is a member of the F.& A.M., K. of P., K. of H.

Debbie was born February 17, 1955 in Wilson, the daughter of Alton Reid Edgerton and Elizabeth Culbreth Edgerton. In addition to her parents Debbie was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Pete Bass.
A woman of quiet strength and unwavering faith, Debbie lived her life rooted in grace, compassion, and purpose. Her faith was not only something she spoke about, but it was also something she lived daily, through acts of kindness, service, and steadfast love.
Debbie found joy in the simple wonders of life. She loved to cast a line and spend peaceful hours fishing, stroll the shores collecting seashells, and beam with pride from the bleachers as she watched her grandchildren play sports. She was their biggest fan and fierce protector, always cheering the loudest, both on and off the field.
To know her was to be loved by her. Debbie was truly the sweetest soul ? gentle in spirit, generous with her heart, and always ready with a warm smile or encouraging words. Her love knew no bounds, and her legacy of faith, kindness, and devotion will live on in the many lives she touched.

Deanna Bassett
March 20, 1949 ? February 3, 2025

Deanna Bassett was born on March 20, 1949 to Robert and Nellie (Fisher) Bassett in Omaha, Nebraska. She grew up in Spalding, Nebraska and graduated from Spalding High School in 1967. Shortly after graduation, Deanne began working at Cornhuskers Ammunition in Grand Island during the time of the Vietnam War. She later worked in car sales in Albian. Finally, Deanna settled in Ashland where she worked at Fruehauf Trailor as a machinist, then for the State of Nebraska as a laborer, and finally for the City of Ashland doing town maintenance. Throughout her life, Deanna always valued hard work.

In Spalding, Deanna met the love of her life, Sandy Kershaw, who was Deanna?s partner for over 40 years before her passing in 2014. Deanna?s family was very important to her, and she always showed the love she had for Sandy, her siblings, and her many nieces and nephews. Deanna was also a good friend. She never forgot anyone she met and would do anything for anyone. People loved her witty and charming personality as well as her honesty. Deanna was also a dog lover and had many dogs throughout her life, all of which were special to her.

Woodworking was a talent that Deanna had; she could make anything out of wood. She was also a skilled machinist and did all of her own mechanical work. In her free time, she loved camping, fishing, and traveling. Deanna and Sandy traveled all over together, but they especially loved going to Canada and Oregon. Deanna was proud of the house she and Sandy built together in Ashland.

After working in car sales, the salesperson?s personality never really left Deanna, and she was wheeling and dealing until the end. She could always negotiate the best deals and prices and knew who to talk to in order to get the best deal. Those who knew Deanna knew she had a nickname for everyone. Deanna had a Mustang she enjoyed driving, and she also liked to drive her golf cart around her acreage. Deanna liked to cheer for the Huskers and also enjoyed watching and listening to sporting events for her family members. The Judds and country music were her favorites.

Deanna was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Nellie Bassett; her lifelong partner, Sandy Kershaw; brother, Bobby Bassett; and nieces: Cindy, Mary, Marie, and Melonie. She is survived by her sister, Kathy (Mike) Langan; sister-in-law, Kay Scala, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; her extended Kershaw family; and good friend, Nicki Bundy as well as many other friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
