| 2152 | Portrait & Biographical Album of Mahaska Co., Iowa, 1887 Robert Bass, b. 9 May 1827, d. 25 May 1909 ROBERT BASS resides upon section 31, Monroe Township, and is numbered among the earliest settlers of Mahaska County. He is the son of W. L. and Margaret (Roberts) Bass, and was born in Boone County, Ky., May 9, 1827. The family moved to Indiana when Robert was but a year old, where they remained till 1843. They then came to Iowa and located in Van Buren County, whence in 1847, they came to Mahaska County, where the mother died in 1883 and the father in 1885. Robert Bass, the subject of this sketch, was reared upon a farm, receiving his education in the pioneer schools of Indiana and Iowa. he cane to Mahaska County in 1845, some two years before his parents, and for almost half a century has been an honored citizen here. Mr. Bass has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary A. Roberts, a daughter of James L. and Rebecca (Coulson) Roberts. Of this union there are four children: Rosa R., the wife of W. E. Stringer, and John A. are residents of Kansas; Eldora and Eva are deceased. The mother of these children died in 1863. The second wife of our subject was Martha Allgood, a native of Indiana, born in 1838. They were united in marriage July 4, 1865, and became the parents of seven children-Mary, Charley, Frank, Nellie (deceased), Robert, Agnes and Paul. The living children by his present wife reside at home. Politically Mr. Bass is a member of the National Greenback party, and has held the office of Justice of the Peace several terms. He came to this county at the time the lands of the New Purchase were placed upon the market, and for a period of six years worked by the month for Mr. John White, now deceased, receiving for his first year's services, wages at the rate of $8.33 1/3 per month. Those were trying times for men, married or single, and rigid economy was the order of the day. Adapting himself to the situation, Mr. Bass worked hard, early and late, saved his money and bought land, which he cultivated, improved, and added to as his means would permit, until he is now the owner of 480 broad acres, with the best class of improvements. He has prospered, and his savings are the result of tireless industry and excellent management. As a citizen, none enjoy more fully the confidence and esteem of their fellow-men, and certainly none are more deserving of it than the subject of this sketch. | Bass, Robert W. (I52982)

| 2155 | Post Independent, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Friday 27 June 2025 Marc A. Bassett September 1, 1956 ? June 11, 2025 Marc Bassett, aged 68 of Carbondale passed away on June 11th, 2025. He was known by many by his full name and big personality. He was a jack of all trades, literally and figuratively. Marc was born on September 1, 1956, in Beverly, Mass., to Joseph Bassett and Dorothy Richards (Morphew). From a young age, Marc knew how to work hard and play hard; from working at the family dairy farm or designing furniture for Ethan Allen, to building and crashing glider planes and raising pet squirrels. Upon graduating from high school, Marc set out in his Volkswagen Bug for California, only to blow a head gasket and take a job in Aspen, CO in 1976. Over the next 50 years in the Roaring Fork Valley he would pester the local wildlife, find and marry the love of his life, and put his stamp on just about every industry around. He said "yes" to life and lived his faith in action as an involved community member. He was a volunteer firefighter throughout the valley with 20+ years with the Carbondale Rural Fire Department, receiving the Lifesaver Award and ending his career there as a Captain. More than anything, Marc loved his wife and family and everything he did was for them. Marc is survived by his wife, Erin Bassett; children Jeremiah Bassett (Rachel), Natalie Bassett Baca (Brent), Jessica Spicer; grandchildren Jack and Austin Bassett and Wesley Baca; two brothers Jon and Dana Bassett. He had many unofficially adopted "kids" that he loved and mentored. He is preceded in death by his parents and many good friends. A Celebration of Life is planned for July 26th, 2025, at 2pm at The Orchard church in Carbondale, CO. Reception immediately following. An annual golf tournament, the Hang 'Em High Invitational, is scheduled for July 25th, 2025 at 8:30am at River Valley Ranch. Marc Bassett was a man of many lives and innumerable stories. We are encouraging those who knew Marc to write a story of him to be included in a book for his grandchildren; stationery and pre-addressed envelopes will be provided at the service. | Bassett, Marc A. | 2163 | PrimitiveBaptist.net Primitive Baptist Preacher Biographies Elder Jeremiah Bass I have always attended church, but the Lord did not deal with me personally until around the year 1990 or 91. Before that time, I was very rebellious against my parents, desiring to walk in my own ways. However, around the dates mentioned above, my pastor, Elder Mark Burress, gave me a book by A. W. Pink entitled The Sovereignty of God. I had never read religious books like that before (except the Bible, and I only read that because I had to), but decided to read it just to please my pastor. I even began at the introduction. For the first several chapters, the reading was boring to me, but one day I remember that suddenly the truths pronounced in that book became real to me. I felt myself to be a changed person, a "new creature." Shortly thereafter, God began to convict me of my sins, one by one. During this period of conviction, I attempted to gain God's favor by doing good works. I began to fast, pray, and read my Bible often. I thought that if I afflicted myself enough, that somehow God would finally accept me. But the more I did these things, the worse I saw myself to become. In attempting to get to heaven in my own strength, I only became more in bondage to the very sins I was trying to escape. However, one day by God's grace, I was shown the true way to salvation. The Holy Spirit through the Word led me away from Mount Sinai to Mount Calvary and led me to trust entirely upon the Lord Jesus Christ and His righteousness for salvation. I was shown that it is simply by faith in the dying Redeemer that we are justified. And as soon as I looked to Jesus, the chains of sin's enslavement fell off. I felt myself to be truly liberated both from the guilt and power of sin. And by God's grace, one day I shall be freed from the presence of sin as well. At this time, I simultaneously began to feel a desire to preach. It was not too long before I was given several opportunities to do so, and felt some measure of success to attend my feeble efforts. Nevertheless, what really sealed the matter for me was on a trip I took with Elder Billy Lawrence to Mexico to visit some churches there. During this trip I was given opportunity to preach twice: the first time I failed miserably, and began to wonder why I was in Mexico to begin with. But the second time I preached, the Lord attended the ministry of the Word with such blessing, even in the conversion of souls, that I was greatly encouraged. Another thing that has encouraged me towards devoting my life to the ministry of the Word, is in the means of preparation for the work. Even before having any opportunity to preach, I began to feel a burden to study the Greek language. This burden became so strong on me that felt I would be in disobedience to God if I did not pursue a study of the language. So down to the Christian book store I went, remembering that I had seen some books about Biblical Greek there. As I was perusing the aisles, a total stranger came tip to me, having noticed that I was looking over a Greek grammar manual, and asked me what I was doing. He did not belong to the store, and I had never seen him before. But after telling him I wanted to learn Greek, and was looking for a grammar to do so, he offered his services. Later I found out he was the pastor of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in town. He told me that he would teach me Greek for free, that all I had to do was to buy the books. So not only did the Lord give me a burden to study Greek, He also gave me a teacher! If this was not a sign of what the Lord had in store for me, I do not know what it was. I have been preaching now for about five years. I was ordained on July 10, 1999, at the Primitive Baptist Church in Lawn, Texas. | Bass, Jeremiah Joseph (I155)

| 2178 | Providence Journal, Rhode Island, Sunday, April 15, 2001 Kerri L. Bessette A Mass of Christian Burial for KERRI L. BESSETTE, 19, of Bedford Drive, Green Hill, a freshman at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pa., who died Thursday at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia after a sudden illness, will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Church, High Street, Wakefield. Born in South Kingstown, Jan. 10, 1982, a daughter of William R. and Kathleen M. (Sprague) Bessette, she was a lifelong resident of South County. Kerri was an honor roll graduate of South Kingstown High School, Class of 2000. While at South Kingstown High, she was captain of the girls cross country team, which held the state championship from 1996 until 1999. She was captain of the girls track and field team, which also held the state championship from 1997 until 2000. This earned her a scholarship to LaSalle University in track and field. In high school she began a Habitat for Humanities program and was involved in Students Against Drunk Driving. She played local softball and basketball, and played on a travel team in soccer. In college, she was a Big Sister and ran both indoor and outdoor track and field. She held several jobs locally, including at the Village Bakery and the Sea Horse Grill at Theater by the Sea. Besides her parents, she leaves a brother, Scott D. Bessette of South Orange, N.J.; a paternal grandmother, Mae W. Bessette of Pawtucket; and maternal grandparents, Norman A. and Ruth Sprague, both of Peace Dale. She was the granddaughter of the late Bertrand M. Bessette. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Providence Journal, Rhode Island, Saturday, April 14, 2001 Kerri Bessette College student from Wakefield dies of bacterial meningitis Kerri Bessette, a star athlete at South Kingstown High School, was stricken with the illness in Philadelphia. Kerri Bessette, 19, a former all-state cross-country star at South Kingstown High School whom friends described as upbeat and outgoing, died in Philadelphia Thursday from complications of bacterial meningitis. A freshman elementary- and special-education major at La Salle University, Bessette grew up in the South Kingstown village of Wakefield. From the Video Junction youth soccer squad in South County to La Salle's cross-country and track teams, Bessette was a dedicated athlete, friends said yesterday. In 1999, she was the top finisher among girls in the Celebrate Summer 5K in Snug Harbor; a year later she improved her time by 3 minutes, to 21 minutes and 57 seconds, and was among the 10 fastest women. Bessette did not neglect her studies, however. As a senior at South Kingstown, she made the honor roll every quarter, and her major at La Salle was a demanding one, requiring an early declaration of intent and a year of student teaching. Bessette intended to teach kindergarten or first grade, said Ashley Matteson, a South Kingstown classmate. Bessette would have followed the career path of her mother, Kathy, who teaches special-education at Matunuck Elementary, Matteson said. "She was so committed to everything that she started," said Jill Apicerno, another classmate. "Even in elementary school she was so dedicated to everything she did." In junior high school, Apicerno said, Bessette belonged to South Kingstown Kids Against Temptation. She continued similar work in high school with Students Against Drunk Driving and a group called Youth to Youth. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, meningitis is an infection of the fluid of the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. Viruses and bacteria can carry the disease, but the bacterial variety is usually more severe. The disease is spread through close contact. When La Salle officials learned of Bessette's illness earlier this week, the school's health center offered free antibiotics to students and staff who had been in recent contact with Bessette. University officials notified the community of her death with a note posted on its Web site, and the Division of Student Affairs provided counseling for her schoolmates. The Catholic university will celebrate a liturgy in Bessette's memory at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Funeral arrangements were not complete yesterday afternoon. | Bessette, Kerri Lynn (I18312)
