Gene?s service will be streamed at https://livestream.com/ankenybaptist/events/10580189
Gene was born October 7, 1948 to Clarence William Gene Sr. and Barbara (Meusburger) Bass. He was raised in ?Dogpatch? Johnston, IA and graduated from Johnston High School in 1967. From the time he was young, Gene helped his dad with furnace and air conditioning jobs. He learned to hunt and fish in the backwoods of Booneville. He loved working on cars and motorcycles. He was proud to be the first graduating class of ?Area 11? now DMACC in the Tool and Die Program. After graduation, Gene joined the National Guard and graduated with honors at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
Gene was gifted in math and his mechanical mind allowed him to make all sorts of tools and bolts to fix and fabricate pieces for guns, knives, bicycles and basically anything. He loved bicycles and built each of his children?s first bikes and in later years, recumbent bikes. He enjoyed many different trips riding on trails all over the USA.
Gene worked as a maintenance machinist at Meredith Printing then bought by RR Donnelly for 15 years. He later worked for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Gene enjoyed his retirement by working on bikes at Kyle?s Bikes and the Bike Barn in Ogden. Gene had friends all over the state of Iowa and didn?t know a stranger.
In 2010, he moved to Ogden, Iowa and shortly after suffered a stroke. He found a community who looked out for him and friends who cared, many of whom attend Ogden Baptist Church.
His children and grandchildren are Gene?s proudest accomplishment. He adored them. He enjoyed going to their events and spending as much time with them as possible.

Willard Ray Bass
December 4, 1944 ? February 25, 2021

Willard is survived by his three children, Kelly, Cindy and Kevin and their families. He was ?PAPS? to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Willard?s wife, Sherri Bass, preceded him in death on November 6, 2020 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Willard was born in Modoc County, California, where he learned to work hard at an early age. That work ethic landed him, Sherri, and the 2 girls in Arizona in 1967 by way of Loveness Logging, and he lived here in the Pinetop-Lakeside area ever since. Kevin later joined the family in 1973. No question that Willard?s favorite work was logging and being in the woods, whether it was loading logs or hauling logs. He took great pride in his Mack and Kenworth trucks he owned. He could fix anything and was often sought out for his skills as a mechanic. If Willard said he was going to do it, you could consider it done and done right. Growing up, Willard was very athletic and especially loved playing baseball and basketball (and was good at them too!). The love of sports was prevalent in his life and he knew his sports history well. If you stopped by to see him, he would have been watching some type of sporting event. He especially loved Nascar, Baseball, Football, Golf, and College Basketball. He loved the Boston Celtics when Larry Bird played. Willard also had a love of old cars from the time he was young, and as one of the old ?Canby? friends told me ? he inspired his son to get into old cars. Willard also enjoyed hunting, but his greatest disappointment was never being drawn for an antelope tag.
There are no immediate services being held for Willard. The family would like to plan a Celebration of Life sometime in the future. If you would like any information you may contact Cindy by email at [email protected] or by cell at 928-358-3873. The family thanks everyone for their support and prayers during this time.

Jo Ann Bassett Campbell

Jo Ann Bassett Campbell died on May 31, 2025 at Norton Clark Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana at the age of 89. She is survived by her adopted daughter Whitney Campbell, her sister Betty Carrol Bassett Bruton and her nephews G. Macaulay Bruton and wife Wendy Satmary, Ian C. Bruton (Chuckie) and wife Silvana Bruton, her niece and nephew, Wendy Campbell and Tom Campbell as well as her extended family Ian Grant Bruton, David Bruton, Ariel Macaulay Bruton, Katherine Bruton, Cienna, Ari and Macie Mae.
A longtime Louisville resident, Jo Ann was born on November 14, 1935 in San Antonio Texas to Elizabeth Earthman Bassett and Charles Carroll Bassett. Charles and Elizabeth later moved to Louisville to live in the Highlands on the edge of Cherokee Park. Though Charles and Elizabeth struggled like most couples, Jo Ann's happiness, joy, and loving nature shined through her infectious smile, as a toddler, a youth, and continued on throughout her life.
Jo Ann married Dr. Peter C. Campbell, Jr. (Pete) in August of 1958. She supported Pete from the time they met, including through his training at the University of Louisville Medical School, followed by his service in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon in the Strategic Air Command to his very successful career as a prominent Louisville Opthomologist. Pete held board appointments in local organizations and Chief of Staff positions in local hospitals, was Vice-Speaker of the House of the Kentucky Medical Association for six years, Speaker of the House for an additional six years, and was a partner at one of Louisville's prominent Ophthalmology Medical Groups until his retirement. Jo Ann faithfully supported Pete his entire career as she maintained and established friendships and relationships by entertaining and delivering creative homemade gifts to many friends, associates, and family. She truly represented the old adage, "Behind every great man is a great woman." She remained by Pete's side throughout their marriage which lasted over 61 years. When asked by her grand-nephew A. Mac Bruton what she did to sustain her marriage all those years, she responded, "I was Pete's number one Cheerleader!"
Jo Ann was an accomplished cook who would spend up to a week preparing lavish holiday meals to the delight of her family. Her dining room was filled with antiques, lit solely with candles, and her dining room table was always adorned with handmade ornaments, vintage china and ante-bellum silver that she and her husband meticulously collected over the years. During holiday meals she would make each family member's favorite dish, the net result being that there were so many dishes served that a single plate could not hold small samples of each. She grew an extensive garden every year, which often included over 100 tomato plants and fresh vegetables she would often give away or can. Weeks before Christmas, she would start canning hundreds of jars of jams and jellies which would be delivered in baskets with a Christmas arrangement as gifts to 50+ families and friends. Pete took great joy in personally delivering the gift baskets, arriving at someone's doorstep dressed in Christmas colors, a Santa hat and a big grin. Jo Ann, for the most part, single handedly decorated her house for Christmas with a huge tree, a handmade door reef, fresh natural garlands, Santa Claus figures of all shapes and sizes, personalized stockings stuffed with toys, and hand wrapped gifts stuffed high around the 10?15 foot tree (her "Grey Tower" house in Anchorage, KY had 20 foot ceilings) covered in antique ornaments, candy canes and tinsel.
Jo Ann had many hobbies, enjoyed children, held classes in ceramics, taught children the art of puppet making, and collected seashells to make pins and flower arrangements for hats. She made dried flower arrangements and raised African Violets plants all of which she sold in her consignment shop on Frankfort Ave which she co-owned with several friends. She helped support her family financially by tirelessly working as the sole landlord of many rental apartment units, buying, selling, renting, cleaning, also providing maintenance and painting.
Jo Ann was an exceptionally creative, energetic and giving woman, a loving wife, sister, mother, aunt and friend and embraced all her family with a deep passion. As her life journey on earth came to an end and her strength began to wane, the deaths of her husband Pete in 2019, son Peter C. Campbell III in 2023, and brother Robert Moorman Bassett in 2024 were hard blows, but she always kept her faith in God and the promise of his redemption. As she took her last breath, she smiled.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, July 11, 2025 also at Pearson's.

Peachie was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gwendolyn Edwards, her husband and the love of her life, Captain Larry W. Bassett, brother-in-law, Norm Alexander, granddaughter, Lindsay Jane Edwards, and her beloved son, Ryan Atherton-Ely, for whom she devotedly and compassionately cared during his battle with brain cancer. Peachie is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and wife, and a caring friend to many. Peachie was a member of the Canton Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 429 and enjoyed several years hosting luncheons for the ladies of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed many activities, including playing Euchre and Poker, dancing, cooking, picnicking, listening to Elvis and country music, making casino trips, camping, and spending time with family and friends. One of Peachie?s favorite things to do was accompany her dear husband, Captain Larry, on his boat, the Sea Dawg, on Lake Ontario. In 2010, Peachie proudly reeled in the 8th largest brown trout in the Lake Ontario Fall Fishing Derby. In 2001, Peachie and Larry set out on the adventure of a lifetime when they drove across the United States and back on their motorcycle. They enjoyed many happy years together as both husband and wife and the very best of friends.

Peachie was an exceptional cook who used her talents to express her love for others and bring family and friends together. No matter your age, she insisted on making your favorite meal and baking you a cake for your birthday. She started planning menus for holidays, family celebrations, and the annual Ryan?s Hope Memorial Softball Tournament, played in remembrance of Ryan Atherton-Ely, weeks or even months in advance to ensure everyone was well-fed and good times were had by all. If you?ve ever been to Peachie?s house for dinner, you have food containers in your cupboards from the leftovers she insisted on sending home with you. Peachie never forgot a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or special event, always making sure everyone knew how loved and precious they were to her.

Peachie was unmatched in her selfless and sacrificial ways, the embodiment of all that it means to be a mother and grandmother. From rocking newborn babies, attending concerts, plays, and sporting events, showing up with a meal and a helping hand, to traveling across the state to help you get settled into your new home, Peachie was an ever-present bedrock of support, solace, and nurturing care for her family, far and near.

Interment at Harleigh Cemetery, Camden, N.J. Remains may be viewed Saturday Evening from 7 to 9.

From Camden, New Jersey Fire Department Website

William Bassett was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on March 18, 1873 as a replacement for William Henry ?Harry? McKeen who had resigned from Engine Company 2 on March 8. He served as an extra man with Engine Company 2 until April of 1876, then as foreman of Engine Company 2 until April of 1877. A painter by trade, he made his home at 517 Benson Street during these years.

William H. Bassett was born in Pennsylvania in June of 1844, according to the 1900 Census. He married in the late 1860s, and was living in Camden's South Ward when the Census was taken in 1870. As stated above, he was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on March 18, 1873, and lived at 517 Benson Street into 1877. The 1878 Camden City Directory gives his address as 623 Royden Street, The Bassett family moved to 310 Stevens Street prior to the compilation of the 1879 City Directory. The Bassetts were at that address when the 1880 Census was taken, then moved to 817 Market Street, where they stayed as late as 1887.

William Bassett returned to the Fire Department as Foreman of Engine Company 2 on April 5, 1882, and served in that capacity for two years. In 1884 and 1885 William Bassett and Isaac M. Shreeve were partners in a painting business called Bassett & Shreeve's.

In 1888 William H. Bassett and family were living at 515 Benson Street, where they stayed through at least 1890. The 1892-1893 Camden City Directory shows that William H. Bassett and Joseph Lynn were the principals in a painting business called Lynn and Bassett, located at 24 South 5th Street. William H. Bassett and family were then living at 563 Mickel Street. The Bassetts remained at this address for several years, last appearing in Camden's City Directories in 1897. The 1898 Camden City Directory states that he had moved to Philadelphia, where he appears in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses.

William H. Bassett died on June 25, 1914 at Runnemede Heights, New Jersey. After funeral services at the home of his son-in-law in Philadelphia, he was buried at Harleigh Cemetery.

Mrs. William Bass Takes Own life Wednesday
Widow Was Despondent Since Husband?s Death in November, 1939

Mrs. Florence Bass died yesterday morning at 11:45 o?clock from the result of swallowing poison, self-administered. Mrs. Bass was found a few minutes after nine o?clock by Carr Davis, and employe of the Bass Plumbing Co., as he returned from the post office.
Mr. Davis said he walked through the living room calling Mrs. Bass. Hearing laborious breathing he went into her bedroom, and found her lying on the bed. He called to her, but received no answer. He telephoned Mrs. Sam Weber, a friend and neighbor of Mrs. Bass, and then called a physician.
Mrs. Weber notified Mrs. Dean Craft, another close friend of the deceased. At Mrs. Craft?s home were Mrs. Blanche Christy, daughter of Mrs. Bass, and her three children, Beal, Billie and Bobbie. Mrs. Christy had arrived from California Tuesday afternoon to make her permanent home with her mother. The children had previously lived with Mrs. Bass.
At an inquest Wednesday afternoon at Haley?s mortuary several witnesses stated that Mrs. Bass had been gravely despondent since the death of her husband, William Bass on Nov. 29th. She had mentioned the futility of living since her husband?s death on several occasions to her grandchildren, and friends, Mrs. Annie Bell, Mrs. Weber and Mrs. Craft. She also had brought the subject up to Mr. Dick, and Mrs. Christy testified her mother mentioned several subjects pertaining to death Tuesday evening.
Yesterday morning Mrs. Bass insisted that her daughter and grandchildren call on Mrs. Weber and Mrs. Craft since they had not seen Mrs. Christy for a long time. The grandchildren and Mrs. Christy testified that Mrs. Bass was in excellent humor expressing gratitude that the family was re-united. She did not seem despondent or melancholy as she had the evening before. She insisted on her daughter and grandchildren coming back at 11 o?clock to prepare lunch for themselves. Mrs. Christy said it was 9:05 o?clock when they left, and she and her children did not see her mother again until several minutes later when they were notified to come home at once.
Beal Dick, Mrs. Bass? grandson who arrived two week?s ago from California to make his home with his grandmother and his sisters and brother, found an empty glass in the bathroom basin, from which his grandmother evidently drank. The attending physician testified the contents must have been a preparation of creosote. He administered an antidote and heart stimulant, but to no avail. The empty bottle was found in the furnace with the label burned off, by Beal, who testified he had seen the bottle and its contents in the desk of the late William Bass. It was learned that this medicine preparation had been used by him in the treatment of asthma, and was dealy poison. Beal said the bottle was approximately three-fourths full when he had last seen it.
A jury of six men at the inquest gave the verdict that the deceased came to death by swallowing poison self-administered.
Surviving Mrs. Bass are: Mrs. Blanche Christy, adopted daughter, and three children by her first marriage by her first marriage, Beal Dick, Miss Billie Dick and Bobbie Dick. The three children had made their home with Mrs. Bass for fourteen years, except Beal who lived in California with his mother for the last two years. Also surviving Mrs. Bass are two sisters, Mrs. Genette Hodson of Purcell, Mo., and Mrs. Geneva Buckner of Anderson, Calif.
Mrs. Bass? body was taken to the Haley mortuary where funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o?clock with the Rev. E.E. Morrow officiating.
Mrs. Florence Bass was born in a farming community near Webb City, Mo., Dec. 9, 1875 to George and Flora Hotckiss Stroupe. She was married to William bass, a native of Louisiana, on April 18, 1900. Five years later she and her husband moved here, where Mr. Bass was engaged in the plumbing and heating business. Mrs. Bass was of the Quaker faith. After her father?s death her mother, Mrs. Stroupe moved here, and later married the father of Mr. Bass.
