Springfield Union, Massachusetts, Thursday, August 13, 1953 Adams Gerald Bessette Reported Missing Adams, Aug. 12 ? A tri-state police alrm went out tonight for Gerald Bessette, 40, of 28 Prospect St., reported here as missing since early morning. His wife, Geraldine, told police Bessette was apparently ill and had shown signs of despondency. Members of the family say the local man left about 7 a.m. supposedly to attend his garden in Cheshire. State police learned that Bessette did not go to the garden. He was traveling n an automobile with Massachusetts plated 280-618. Springfield Union, Massachusetts, Friday, August 14, 1953 Gerald Bessette, 40, Said To Be Despondent; Arm Cut Adams, Aug. 13 ? A searching party of 30 volunteers, with local and state police, about 9.40 tonight found the body of Gerald Bessete, 40, of 28 Prospect St. lying approximately 300 feet from his automobile parked off East Rd. in the town of Windsor. Indications were that he had severed an artery in his arm near the elbow. A jackknife lay nearby, according to police, who determined that Bessette had probably bled to death. Investigators say members of Bessette?s family reported him as having been ill and despondent. Bessette had been missing from home since Wednesday when his wife, Geraldine, told police her husband left in the morning saying he was going to a garden plot in Cheshire. He never arrived at the garden. This started the sarch which ended tonight. Word reached Adams early in the evening that East Windsor residents had discovered an abandoned car on a road leading to a dumpt a half mile from the Alan M. Limberg farm. M.R. Jacobs, a neighbor of the Limburgs,, notified state police at Pittsfield, who in turn communicated with local authorities saying that the keys were in the ignition of the Bessette car, identified by the registration. Finding of the body ended an otherwise hopeful vigil by Bessette?s wife. The couple have four children and are among the town?s highly respected residents. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Bessette are incomplete. The North Adams, Massachusetts Transcript, August 1953 Find Missing Man?s Body In Windsor The search for Gerald L. Bessette, 40, of 28 Prospect street, who left his home Wedneday morning at 7 o?clock, came to an end last night at 9.45 o?clock when his lifeless body was found lying on the ground in a densely wooded section of East Windsor. Had Been Despondent An artery in the left arm near the elbow had been severed and a jackknife was found near the body. Medical Examiner Albert C. England of Pittsfield viewed the body at 10.30 o?clock and pronounced death due to bleeding from the artery. He called the wound self-inflicted. Dr. England express the opinion Mr. Bessette had been dead from eight to 24 hours when the body was discovered. Mr. Bessette had been despondent because of ill health that had allowed him to work only three days at the Dewey & Almy Chemical company plant since his annual vacation last month. When he left his home Wednesday morning he told his wife he was going to Cheshire to work in his garden there. When he failed to return home Wednesday night Mrs. Bessette notified the Adams police at 8 o?clock and an alarm was sent out over the state police teletype to police in eight states, giving his description and the registration numbers of his car in which he had driven away from his home. Last night at 6.30 o?clock Mrs. Alan M. Limburg, whose husband is president of Alanson Products, Inc., which operates a wallpaper manufacturying plant on Grove street in Adams, telephoned the state police barracks from the Limburg residence at Windsor that an auto had been parkerd for some time just off East Windsor raod in that town. Search Started Trooper A. J. Sousa went to Windsor to investigate and, from the registration, deteremined that the car was Mr. Bessette?s. The keys were in the ignition and the windows were open. Trooper Sousa, assisted by two Windsor men, made a brief search in the immediate vicinity of the auto but to no avail ad then telephoned the Pittsfield barracks for assistance. The barracks got in contact with the Adams police and Windsor constables and auxiliary police from that town. Chief Edward W. Reid and Patrolman Erdeski headed the Adams delegation. Others from Adams who were in the searching party, including fellow employes of Mr. Bessette at the Dewey & Almy plant; were: Peter Paciorek, Alton Cahoon, Jr., Armine Heinz, Donald Livesey, Harold Waterman, Franklin E. Crandall, George Clerc, Harold Bryant, Warren Robinson, Dixon H. Daniels and John T. Munn. With the group numbering about 25, an intensive search was then started of the wooded area. It was Raymond Estes of Windsor who discovered the body about 300 feet from where the car had been left by Mr. Bessette. The Pittsfiels tate police barracks and the Adams police station then were notified. After Dr. England had viewed the body it was removed by Funeral Director Frank B. McBirde to his funeral home in Adams. Adams Native Mr. Bessette was born in Adams, a son of Mrs. Ada Bessette and the late Louis Bessette. He attended the Adams schools and was life-long resident. He was a lift-truck operator for the Dewey & ALmy Chemical company by whom he had been employed since the concern started operations here several years ago. He was secretary and treasurer of Local 841, TWUA-CIO, at the plant and had been active in union affairs since the local was organized. Besides his wife, the former Geraldine Kearns of Adams, and his mother who resides with them, he leaves foru children, Carolyn, Thomas, William and David, and a foster brother, Harry Derosia, all of Adams. | 2071 | Northampton Chronicle and Echo, Saturday, 11 October 1930 Death Of Mr. Thomas Bass Long Record Of Service To Education Committee We regret to announce the death, which occurred in the early hours of this morning of Mr. Thomas Bass, of 52, Kinglsey Park-terrace, Northampton, a respected member of the staff of the Northampton Borough Education Committee. Mr. Bass, who was 51 years of age, had not enjoyed very good health of late years, but his death, nevertheless, will come as a great shock to his many friends. While going to lunch a week last Friday, Mr. Bass collapsed near the Kingsley Park Hotel, and was taken to his home, a short distance away, and attended by Dr. A.A. Stewart. He made a rally during the week, but died in the early hours of this morning. A native of Northampton, Mr. Bass was a son of the late Mr. G. Bass, who for many years carried on business as a jeweller in Sheep-street. He was educated at the old British Schook, and on leaving school, in 1895, entered the School Board offices, and continued until 1897, when he transferred to the Magistrates? Clerk?s department, under the late Mr. J.B. Hensman, who was Magistrates Clerk and also clerk to the School Board. After holding an appointment under the County Council, Mr. Bass came back to the School Board offices in 1898, the year in which the late Mr. Stewart Beattie was appointed secretary to the Board. In 1902 the duties of the School Board were taken over by the Education Committee of the Town Council under the Education Act, and Mr. Bass continued to render good service, especially as clerk for primary education. Mr. Bass was a popular member of the Pomfret Lodge of Freemasons, and also a member of the chapter. He was a regular follower of the Northampton Rugby Football Club, rarely missing a match. Mr. Bass married a Northampton lady, Miss Nellie Foster, and much sympathy will be extended to hear and the only son, Mr. J.G. Bass, who has played back for the Saints, ?A? and the Crusader, and is a good batsman and bowler for the Northamptonians C.C. He is associated with Messrs. Howes, Percival and Bud, Northampton. It is a tragic coincidence that three weeks ago to-day, Mr. Bass was a bearer at the funeral of Mr. A.C. Boyde, Director of Education. The funeral will take place on Tuesday. | Bass, Thomas (I12)

| 2072 | Northampton Mercury, England, Saturday, 23 February 1878 Leighton Buzzard The oldest inhabitant, John Dollin Bassett, died on the 15th instant, at the age of ninety-two years. The deceased, the son of Peter and Ann Bassett, was born at Leighton Buzzard, on the 14th of April, 1786. He was educated at Hitchin, and succeeded to his father?s business, as a wool-stapler and draper, which he carried on for some years. Soon after the commencement of the present century, he founded the Leighton Bank, the firm being carried on under the name of Bassett, Grant, Sharples, and Exton. The deceased was associated with Clarkson and Wilberforce in the abolition of the slave trade; was a member of the Peace Society; and was much interested in the temperance movement, the Temperance Hall being built by him and the late Mrs. Grant. The British and Foreign Bible Society has lost in him a firm friend, as for many years he acted as treasurer of the local auxiliary. Several London hospital shared his bounty, and locally he was a staunch supporter of the Working Men?s Institute, and the charitable institutions of the town. Deceased was interred in the burial-ground of the Society of Friends, on Thursday. Cedars House, Church Square, Leighton Buzzard, Bedford (From the Leighton-Linsdale Past Times) Built in 1855 for John Dollin Bassett of Bassett's Bank, this house is situated at the end, and facing down the length of the High Street. The building is in the grounds of the original Leigh Manor House and a number of the buildings from the original Prebendal Manor House remain in the grounds e.g. the 'Temple'. In 1866, John Dollin Bassett moved to live with his son Francis Bassett at The Heath Plantation Road and the house was taken over by Mr. Theodore Harris (a partner of Mr. Bassett). The author Mary Norton (1903 - 1992) spent many years of her childhood living at Cedars House, and she based "Firbank Hall" in her famous book "The Borrowers" on Cedars House. Subsequently, the building was used as a cottage, hospital, and then finally it was purchased by the Education Committee and in March 1921 the Cedars Secondary School held its first entrance exam and opened later that year. Further change occurred with the introduction of Comprehensive Secondary Education and the adoption of a Lower, Middle and Upper School system in the County. Cedars was to become an Upper School and as a result it was decided that a new purpose built site would be required and in 1973 the School moved to its present location in Mentmore Road, Linslade. At the same time the old school became Leighton Middle School, which it still is today. | Bassett, John Dollin (I8)

| 2073 | Northampton Mercury, England, Saturday, 9 December 1843 An Ill-Behaved Tunrpike Man Mr. Joel Bass, Stagsden, preferred a complaint against Thomas Page, the toll collector at the Roxton gate, for obstructing him, and preventing him passing through the gate. It appears that Mr. Bass had driven through in a gig on the 14th ult., and paid the usual toll to the defendant. He returned the same night after ten o?clock, and the defendant again demanded the toll, asserting that it was past 12. Mr. Bass pulled out his watch, and showed him that it was only 20 minutes after 10. The defendant however, became very abusive, and challenged to fight Mr. Bass. Defendant?s wife called out of window to him to let the gentlemen go through, for they were right. He, however, seized the horse?s head. Mr. Bass then jumped out and collared him, and forced him away from the horse. The defendant renewed his abuse, and until until after a considerable hindrance did he allow the gig to pass. Defendant acknowledged his fault; he said he was mistaken in the hour.
