| 1356 | Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery John Thomas Bass April 7, 1926 ? June 24, 2025 John Thomas Bass, of Round Rock, Texas, departed this life to be with his LORD and Savior Jesus Christ on June 24, 2025, at the sensational age of 99. John was born April 7, 1926, near Hamlin, Texas, to Gertrude Ella Neal Bass and Fred Edward Bass, and was given the name J. T. Bass. John grew up in the Dallas area during the Great Depression with humble means. He and his six siblings succeeded in enjoying each other and having fun despite the leanness of the era. John also spent much time as a child with his beloved maternal grandmother Dora Judy Shearin Neal, who lovingly called him her ?little Jimmy.? He was a great companion to her as a widow on a farm and helped milk the cows, pick cotton, and work the garden. After high school graduation, J. T. enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medical technician in Japan in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign of World War II. Upon entry to the U. S. Army, it was required that he supply a first and middle name and he was thereafter known as John Thomas, naming himself after his maternal grandfather John Thomas Neal who had died months after his birth. In 1957 John graduated from North Texas State College with a degree in Biology, with nearly a double major in Chemistry. He proceeded to work in a Houston hospital as a medical technician drawing blood and counting blood cells the old-fashioned way, under a microscope! He humbly said that doctors would call for him because he was so successful with difficult patients. John met the beautiful Grace Nonee Tedford at the hospital and fell in love with her. He would call her on the phone - from the hospital lab to the hospital insurance office - and play the words of the Jim Reeves song ?Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.? She used to love to tell that romantic story! They were married April 29, 1960, in Houston, Texas, and spent almost 64 years together before she passed away in 2024. John was chivalrous and protective of his bride, served her well, and loved her to the end. In 1972, John, Nonee, and their daughter Melissa moved to Austin where John began his career at the Texas Department of Health Resources. He traveled around the state registering and licensing thousands of X-ray machines, and per a newspaper article in 1981, he alone was responsible for tracking down those who failed to register. Upon completing 20 years of service with the Texas Department of Health, he retired as the Chief of Industrial Radiography & Reciprocity at the Bureau of Radiation Control. On the home front, John and Nonee enjoyed working a big garden together every year and always had fresh vegetables for the dinner table. The first thing John would do when he got home from work each day was walk out to the garden and inspect the progress, picking anything that was ripe. John also joined Nonee in her love for roses and they entered rose shows together. He would also participate in her crossword puzzle solving when she would get stuck - or if she put the paper down, he couldn?t resist having a go at it. They also loved playing Texas 42 dominos, and in their later years played classic dominos with family and friends. Sundays (and Wednesday nights) consisted of the love of Bible study and worshipping their Savior together at church. John was a greeter for many years at Hyde Park Baptist Church as well as Austin Baptist Church where he and Nonee were founding members. John enjoyed serving by setting up the chairs each week for the Sunday service at the temporary ABC location. John also in retirement fulfilled a desire for woodworking. He built a workshop in the backyard and began creating birdhouses which he gifted to many. One day he showed up with a hobby horse for his grandson, followed by a doll cradle for his granddaughter, and then fulfilled a request for a puppet theater, as well as other novelty items. John was an athletic fellow and loved tennis and golf (even won trophies!) He occasionally played golf with a 90-year-old man, which at the time was a fair gap in their ages, but he loved to bring joy to people. He served as treasurer for the Austin Senior Golf Association for years. In retirement, you would regularly see him driving his pickup truck with his golf cart in the back of the truck bed! A beautiful trait of John was that he was content to be himself and never felt a need to impress folks. The last time John was on a golf course hitting golf balls, he was 98 years old! He was a devoted grandfather and could be found at every Trick-or-Treat candy bucket, many a soccer, football or baseball game, theater performances, school programs and Eagle Scout project. Regularly his truck would be seen at the end of the soccer field and he would be leaning against it, wearing his shorts, tall white socks and a cap! John was stable, methodical, intelligent, and diligent at all the things he did in life. He was grateful for all that he had and appreciated time spent with the ones he loved. He was a wonderful host and wanted to serve to make everyone comfortable and happy. Most of all, John was kind and a gentleman with a pleasant demeanor. His eyes twinkled with a joyful spirit and he always had a smile on his face. It was his mission to make people smile and lighten their load. He would say something witty and unexpected, and laughter would erupt (he would even amuse himself at times!) Everywhere he went he had folks laughing and smiling with his singing and his wit. John loved music, loved to sing, and loved listening to his LP albums on his Victrola record player. He loved his music ?smooth? and his favorites were hymns and Jim Reeves. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Grace Nonee Hudgins Bass, his parents Gertrude and Fred Bass and his beloved sisters Camilla Duplantis and Nellie Medford, and stepdaughter Dareria Lynne Combs. He is survived by siblings Freddie Thomas, Jackie Bass, Oleta Holt, and Diana Barnett, and by his children John T. Bass, Jr., Peggy Ann Branton, Melissa Ruth Hill, stepson Randall Tedford, and grandchildren Meagan Word, Alex Branton, Robert John Eino Hill, III, Audrey Grace Hill Campbell, Duane Tedford, Sean Tedford, Daniel Gilara, Jennifer Gilara, Elizabeth Gilara, and many great-grandchildren as well as great-great-grandchildren. We all delighted in John Thomas Bass, beloved father and grandfather, and he made the world a better place. What a blessing it will be to see him again in Glory! A visitation for John will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Interstate 35, Pflugerville. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Following the service, he will be laid to rest with military honors at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery. 1940 Federal Census of Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas Fred Bass - 42 - Male - Texas - Head - Cement Finisher Gertrude - 38 - Female - Texas - Wife J T - 13 - Male - Texas - Son Camilla - 11 - Female - Texas - Daughter Freddie - 8 - Female - Texas - Daughter Jackie - 6 - Male - Texas - Son Nellie - 2 - Female - Texas - Daughter Oleta - 9/12 - Female - Texas - Daughter | Bass, John Thomas (I45155)

| 1377 | Cutbank Pioneer Press, February 25, 2014 Oliver John Bassett (Picture included) Oliver John Bassett, Cut Bank, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 after a brief illness. Services were held at St. Margaret?s Catholic Church on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Oliver was buried alongside his beloved mother in Virginia City. He was born in Butte on Nov. 5, 1925 to John and Orlean (Daems) Bassett, the oldest of three children. In l933, tragedy struck the family as their beloved father was killed in an oilrig accident. The bereft family relocated to Ennis where Oliver attended elementary school. He graduated from Gonzaga Prep and attended University of Oklahoma (majoring in petroleum engineering). His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Navy during World War II. After the war, Oliver enrolled at Carroll College to become a priest. Oliver worked briefly for Boeing then for Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad after 30 years of employment. Montana always called to Oliver as his cherished memories revolved around this beautiful part of the country. In 2003, Bud sold his home and moved to his beloved Cut Bank. Here, the town became his ?family,? forming bonds with his church and friends. Everyone looked after Oliver and he was always grateful for these loving people in his life. He never returned to Seattle, even to visit, as he couldn?t bear to leave. Oliver was passionate about music: writing songs and playing the piano, organ, mandolin and banjo. He was also interested in the history of food, owning an extensive cookbook collection though he rarely cooked. | 1386 | Daily Inter Ocean, Chicago, Illinois, Saturday, September 28, 1889 Answered Death?s Call William R. Bassett, One of Chicago?s Well Known Characters, Passes Away A Simple, Honest, Kind-hearted Man Whom the Poor Will Badly Miss William R. Bassett None of those who knew him in life, however remotely, will hear without a pang of regret that ?Billy? Bassett died at a little before 7 o?clock yesterday morning at his residence, No. 1329 Wabash avenue. The familiar nickname by which every one knew him may seem somewhat out of place now that death has come, but the man was so genial, so unaffected, so kind-hearted that none ever thought of addressing him by anything other than the familiar and endearing title. Mr. Bassett?s death had been expected ever since an attack of apoplexy struck him down Wednesday night. He never regained consciousness afterward. The career of Billy Bassett was not particularly eventful, but it was in many respects a remarkable one. He began life in Chicago something like thirty years ago as a ?bus driver, and when he quit this life he left an estate worth from $35,000 to $40,000. It was all amassed through his own perseverance and honest industry. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1840, and was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustavus Bassett, who have resided in Buffalo for over sixty years. Though he had no brothers, he was blessed with five sisters, and, as is usual in such cases, was the idol of the family. His father conducted and still carried on quite an extensive hat, cap, and fur business in Buffalo. When William quit school he didn?t care to follow in the footsteps of his father. He wanted to build his own fortune, and in compliance with his request he was sent to Chicago. This was some time before the war. Upon his arrival in Chicago he was given a situation in the hat, cap and fur store of Bassett & Hammond, the senior member of the firm being his uncle. A fortnight in this business was enough, and he quit it and started out on his own hook. Left to his own resources, he hired himself out to S.B. and M.O. Walker as a ?bus driver. He remained in this position a year or so, and at the end of that time had saved up enough money to buy a hack and team of horses of his own. He was genial and accommodating, and his business thrived. In the course of a few years he opened a livery stable, which is now estimated to be worth over $20,000. No man in the Second Ward, whether in politics or one of it, was more popular than Billy Bassett. Generous to a fault and always in a good humor, was his normal condition. No man ever went to him in want and came away empty-handed. ?I drove a hack for him for over fifteen years,? remarked Gus Otis, one of the old-time hackman, last night, ?and in all that time I never knew him to do a mean thing. Many?s the time I?ve seen fellows come to him hard up, and he always helped them out.? ?That?s so,? put in Charlie Moynihan. ?I drove for him six years. I remember, not long before I quit driving for him, we were out to Mount Greenwood Cemetery and he bought a lot. It surprised me, and I asked what he wanted it for, and he answered with a good natured augh. ?If any of my boys die there is a place for them.? Not long after that a roustabout who worked in his stable died, and though the fellow had only worked in the barn two weeks, he paid all his funeral expenses. That wasn?t the only time I have known him to pay for burying boys who died out of luck. Several times I remember of his hearing of the death of someone he had known in prosperity, but who owing to hard luck, died penniless. He would go around quietly and put up the money to give them a decent funeral.? ?I have known Billy Bassett a good many years,? said John Long, of the Park Theater, ?and a kinder-hearted man I never knew. Never made much of a display, but many are the follows that he has bridge over financial troubles by his generous assistance. I?ll venture to say that no one will miss him mor than the poor of his neighborhood. If he heard of any family in distress he couldn?t rest easy till he had given them help. Another thing about Billy, you always knew where he stood. He wouldn?t be your friend to your face, and the minute your back was turned cut your throat. Whatever he said you could count on.? ?Some years ago he opened a restaurant at No. 336 South Side street,? said Charlie Matthews, and old friend, ?and for over a year and a half he kept a kind of open house there for his friends. Whenever one of the boys would come around broke, Billy would give him a good square meal and never charge him a cent for it. He was an excellent eaterer, but the best of them can?t run a business on perpetual tick, and a year ago he sold out.? Mr. Bassett?s father arrived yesterday, and other members of his family will arrive in time for the funeral. The service will be conducted from the Railroad Chapel, No. 1421 State street, Sunday morning at 10:30 o?clock. The sermon will be preached by the Rev. C. M. Morton. The burial will take place at Mount Greenwood Cemetery. The funeral train will leave Polk Street Depot at 12 o?clock. His friends are invited to attend. | Bassett, William Remington (I10811)

Perhaps even more remarkable than her insatiable appetite for books was her memory, which retained not only minute details of the plots of hundreds of novels but also the names of the major, minor, and even bit-part characters of television shows of the 1950s through the 1970s?and the names of the actors who played those roles. She had a great fondness for figurines and other knickknacks and enjoyed making potholders out of cotton loops on a loom and sewing holders for pens, eyeglasses, and needles out of felt and colored threads. A familiar figure on her daily walks to the post office, the Service Pharmacy, NBT Bank, the New Berlin Library, Stewart?s, the New York Pizzeria, and the Senior Center (as well as the Big M, Trash & Treasure, and Remember When Antiques & Guest House before those businesses closed), Phebe had friends, friendly acquaintances, and wonderful helpers in all those places? most recently Mary Lyon and Maureen Anderson, among others richly deserving of mention but too numerous to list here. Phebe was seen less frequently after her move in November 2016 from the family home, at 35 South Main St., to an apartment at 2 Terrace Heights, from which she could not walk down into the village but from which she was fortunate enough to have friends willing to drive her where she needed to go. After a fall in January of this year she spent a few days recovering at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and then made what turned out to be a permanent move to Chase Memorial Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, which she chose over two facilities in Norwich because it was in New Berlin, only a stone?s throw from her apartment and within reach of her village and her friends. A necessarily modest supporter of the New Berlin Library and the Unadilla Valley Railway Society and Museum, Phebe would have liked to sponsor other organizations of the village where so many people had been extraordinarily kind to her and and for whom she had so much affection in return. All will be welcome to attend a memorial gathering at Chase (1 Terrace Heights) at 2:00 on Tuesday, October 15th. Phebe will be missed by many, as doubtless will her signature admonitions when she was bidding farewell to friends?pieces of advice we can remember with a smile as we in turn bid her a final, fond farewell: ?Don?t dream anything I wouldn?t dream. And Don?t Trust the Weather!? | Bassett, Phebe Lord (I3429)

| 1400 | Dallas Morning News, June 20, 2019 Catherine Bassett (1968 ? 2019) (Picture included) Catherine Bassett, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 30, 2019 after losing her lengthy battle with heart disease. She was 50 years old. Catherine is survived by her sons, Matthew, Patrick, and Brian, and her daughter Ashley Holmes, her husband Bryan, and grandson, Jaxson Holmes. Catherine is also survived by her mother, Mary Bassett, brother Tom and wife Kathie, her sister Elizabeth, and brother Samuel and his wife Jennifer. Her beloved service dog, Rusty, and her father, Albert Bassett, preceded her in death. Catherine was born in Orange, California on September 30, 1968. She graduated from North Texas State University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in Education. Following a career in teaching, Catherine became a real estate broker. As a young adult, Catherine developed a heart disease, late in pregnancy, called Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM), forcing her to limit her daily activities. She became an advocate for the early detection of PPCM and traveled extensively in her last year with her favorite traveling companion, Rusty, her 14-year old lab, with the goal of meeting as many of her "heart sisters" as she could. Catherine's foremost missions in her life were raising her children to adulthood and advocating for the early detection of PPCM in expectant mothers. Catherine will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her positive outlook on life, and her inspirational connection with her fellow "heart sisters." A memorial service will be held, Friday June 28 at 11:30AM, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton, Texas. | Bassett, Catherine Marie (I28966)
