Thomas Wayne Bass
February 23, 1947 ? February 9, 2026
Palm Bay

Thomas Wayne Bass, 78, of Palm Bay, passed away on February 9, 2026. He was born on February 23, 1947, in Dothan, Alabama, to Jack Bass and Rosa Freddie Quattlebaum Bass. He was raised with a deep appreciation for hard work, respect, and family?values shaped during his childhood on his grandparents? farm, which he often called the best days of his life.
Tom?s greatest pride was his family. He was a loving father to his two sons, Matthew Wayne Bass and Joshua Caleb Bass, and a cherished father-in-law to Kyrie and Taylor, whom he loved as daughters. His grandsons?Isaiah, Alden, Sawyer, and Lawson?were his greatest joy.
He shared a special relationship with his sister, Peggy, and considered her husband, Steve, a brother.
Tom loved stories?both telling them and reading them?and found happiness in simple pleasures: a good book in his hands, classic Westerns on the television, Patsy Cline playing in the background, and Southern cooking on the table. He was a man of habit, loyalty, and quiet strength who lived each day as if it were his last.
He will be deeply missed as a devoted father and grandfather and will remain in our hearts and memories until we meet again.

James Raymond Bassett

James Raymond (Jim) Bassett, 84, of Casper, WY took a leisurely evening ride on his motorcycle June 24, 2024 with no destination in mind. When he met a deer, it turned out to be his golden road home and he arrived, early in the morning of the 25th, at the feet of Jesus.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held Sunday, June 30th, 4pm at Casper First Church of the Nazarene, 2020 S. Jefferson.
Jim was born May 5, 1940 in Torrington, WY to Hal and Lorraine (Walker) Bassett. He was born between his older sister Halene (Dinnel) and younger sister Sherrill (Wagner). He graduated from Torrington High School in 1958 and married Elizabeth "Betty" Peters in November of 1959. They welcomed their first daughter in 1960 and she was followed closely by their first son in 1961, a son in 1963, another son in 1964, and again a son in 1969. Finally, in 1976, Jim got his wish to have a second daughter. He was very proud of all of his children and supported them mightily in all of their endeavors.
Jim opened Mountain Surveying in 1976. Running his own land surveying business ended up being a passion and a dream come true. He became a life long surveyor, doing his continuing education and keeping his license clear up to his death. Jim loved motorcycles. So much so that the number he owned throughout his life is unknown by his family. Daily rides in good weather were a part of life, even in winter. Jim loved tractors and was an avid collector of both life size and toys. Another part of his many eclectic collections were a number of firearms both antique and new. Jim was well loved and respected by the community and his church family. Throughout his years in church he was a board member and teen leader. He took the teens on many outdoor adventures from long bike rides and river floats to backpack trips to remote and beautiful places. He will be truly missed everyday.
Jim is survived by his six children, Sonya (Tracy) Wolff of Casper, Perry (Sharon) Bassett of Colorado Springs, Michael Bassett of Evansville, Kendall (Brigat) Bassett of Evansville, Cary (Jodie) Bassett of Blue Springs, MO, and Tiffany (Terry) Clabaugh of Casper, his older sister Halene Dinnel of Casper, his younger sister Sherrill (Bill) Wagner of Gilbert, AZ, 8 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 18 step-great grand children, many nieces and nephews, and numerous "adopted" grandchildren in his church family, some who called him "Papa Jim". He is preceded in death by his parents Hal and Lorraine and his wife of nearly 62 years, Betty.
Memorial donations may be made to First Church of the Nazarene (memo line, teen department) 2020 S. Jefferson, Casper, WY 82601. The family wishes to sincerely thank the members of the church for their many years of friendship and support.

He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was born Cecil Glen Blackman Jr. His biological parents were: Cecil Glen Blackman & Viola Bartlett Blackman. He had two biological siblings: Joyce Estella Blackman & Kenny Leroy Blackman. He was united with his sister Joyce at his high school graduation. They were close until her death on Jan 9, 1982. It has always bother Steve that he was unable to locate his younger brother Kenny. He finally accepted the fact that he did not realize he was adopted as he was only four years old. They were both adopted from the Annie Wittenmyer Orphanage in Davenport, Ia. in May 1947. Steve was raised on the East side of the state of Iowa. Kenny is believed to have been raised on the West side of the state of Iowa around Sioux City.
Steve?s adoptive parents were: Theodore W & Mabel Bassett. He spent his whole life serving the Lord through his gospel music; He was saved at a Billy Graham Concert at the age of 8 years old. Steve graduated from Edgewood High School, Edgewood, Iowa on May 16, 1957. He was always proud that his diploma was presented to him by his father who was president of the school board. He was secretary of his high school senior class.
Steve was in the Jr ROTC in high school for the Navy. Upon graduation from high school he was accepted into the Air Force. He used to say for one day he was in two branches of the service. Steve served his county from 1957 until 1967. He was stationed in Coos Bay, Oregon. He was a navigator flying many missions. His nickname "Steve" came during his time in the Air Force. He always wore a white scarf around his neck which simulated a character in the comics, Steve Canyon. At first they called him Capt. Canyon and later that was dropped and it became "Steve".
Steve then spent 20 years as a coast to coast truck driver. Next Steve attended college in Colorado for law enforcement. He then worked on the Governor?s Law Enforcement Task Force. He had to retire from this in 1992 due to the onset of glaucoma. He then came to Missouri to pursue his career with his gospel singing. He followed Billy Graham and worked with him bringing special music to his services. He also did nursing home ministries and sang at other functions all his life. When it made it to Branson he sang with Barbara Fairchild and then the Blackwood Brothers. He soon found out he preferred to sing as a soloist.
He then moved on to the travel business which he had a partner. He and his best friend, Russ had tours to many places including Branson and the Holy Land. His dream was to take Sue to the Holy Land before he passed. We did not make it though.
He met Sue (the love of his life) in the winter of 2004. They immediately were drawn together after just a few months. She told him their meeting was ?Divine Intervention?. She later told him her last name was Divine. He then decided she was the one for him as he wanted someone with a sense of humor. Hobbies: Bass vocalist, pianist, travel, fishing, cooking, family and friends. He enjoyed cutting his own gospel music album in 1991.

While in the Navy, Ken met and married his wife, Donna (Anderson) Bassett in June, 1952 when he was on leave. After the Navy, Ken attended Iowa State University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1958. Chadwick?s History of Shelby County, Indiana
James H. Nail

Shelby county boasts of no older and no more highly respected family than that of the Nails. They were the pioneer of pioneers, coming here when settlements were few and far between: neighbors several days? ride from each other, and the whole face of the country covered by the primeval forests. The first-comers and their descendants have always occupied honorable positions among their fellow citizens, helped materially in the agricultural development of the county, and were splendid types of the kind of men that it take to make a state out of raw materials. Though the family originated in Germany they have been identified with the United States from a period antedating the Declaration of Independence. Henry Nail, the emigrant founder, who was born in the German Fatherland in 1771, came three years later with his parents to Pennsylvania. In 1776 they migrated to Rowan county, North Carolina, where a settlement was made and a home established. In 1799 Henry was married to Mary Keller, a native of Pennsylvania, and in 1824 brought his family to Indiana, finding a location in Shelby county on land purchased from the government. With Henry Nail came his son, Samuel, who was fifteen years old when they reached this newest of the northwestern states. Samuel Nail, the most noted of the family connection, was born in Rowan county, North Carolina, September 1, 1809. He remained with his parents until he was twenty-two years old, and then took one of man?s most important steps in the world by marrying. The lady of his choice was Cherry Wray, a typical pioneer girl, who knew how to spin and weave, make clothes for the family out of home-produced material, and do the other useful things essential in a woman who was the be the wife of a first settler. She was born in Virginia, September 30, 1813, her parents being James and Tabitha (Bass) Wray, who came to Shelby county in 1822. James Wray, who was born in Virginia January 13, 1787, became a minister of the Gospel and was a member of these sturdy soldiers of the cross known as the pioneer preachers. Tabitha Bass, who shared his hardships as well as his triumphs in the trying times of the western settlement, was a native of North Carolina. Samuel Nail became one of the most successful farmers and most extensive land owners of the county. His holdings included four hundred and twenty acres in Brandywine township, sixty acres in Addison township, some property in Fairland, and eighty acres in Missouri. He and his wife were charter members of the old Protestant Methodist church in Brandywine township, and were regarded as pillars of the faith during their long and useful lives. For many years it was the custom of the children to hold family reunions to celebrate the union or natal days of their parents, and these were occasions long to be remembered as evidencing the sincere affection and high esteem in which this fine old couple were held.
James H. Nail, perhaps the best known of the children, was born in Addison township, Shelby county, Indiana, December 25, 1844. He helped clear away some of the forest on this father?s land and knows at first hand what it meant to be the child of a pioneer farmer in Shelby county. When nineteen years old he enlisted in the famous Seventieth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Benjamin Harrison in the beginning, and with this command took part in the battles of Kenesaw Mountain, Pumpkin Vine Creek, Resaca, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta, besides many hot skirmishes, like that at New Hope church. After his muster out in 1865 he returned to the old home farm in Addison township, and resumed the peaceful occupation of tilling the soil. He has been twice married, but had no children by the first union. December 30, 1883, he married Mary, daughter of Henry and Matilda (Muir) Howe, who was born and reared in Indianapolis. After his marriage Mr. Nail engaged in farming on his own account. He first bought a small place of thirty-three acres in Brandywine township, to which he has added from time to time until he owns now about one hundred and thirty acres of good farming land. In 1893 he purchased a house of South street, in Shelbyville, to which he removed for a residence, having retired from active farming pursuits. Later he acquired various pieces of property in Shelbyville, and has since devoted most of his attention to looking after the same. In 1907 he bought a house at No. 36 North Tompkins street, in which he is making his present home. Politically he has always been a Republican. When General Harrison was inaugurated President Mr. Nail has the honor of acting as escort to his olde commander of Civil war days. Joyce Ann Lucas Bass

Spring bestows many reasons of hope and eternal life. Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the ultimate sign of eternal hope and life. On this day, April 8, 2012, the Lord has once again risen and moved that Rock of Ages to the wayside to take one of his angels home. With the melodic songs and chirping of the springtime birds heralding the arrival of a "rare and virtuous woman," Joyce Ann Lucas Bass, 75, of Malden has ascended on a soft, warm spring breeze from her Earthly bounds to enter the Gates of Heaven. Joyce was born January 26, 1937, in Charleston.

"Let her own works praise her in the gates." Joyce retired from the Kanawha County Assessor's Office in 1998 after 37 years of public service, and years of hard work for her church and her family.

Joyce has already had a joyous celebration with her father, Paul Lucas, and mother, Kathleen ("Sissy"). Waiting at her prepared mansion were her brothers, Wyatt "Pude" Lucas and Charles Lucas. Oh how they are answering to their big sister once again, but loving every moment of it. We can picture her favorite cousin, Arleigh Ray Lucas, with his special laugh, just snickering his heart to content at Joyce straightening the boys out once again.

As her family in Heaven is rejoicing, her family remaining on Earth is overwhelmed with a mixture of sorrow, yet happiness that Joyce has fulfilled her final goal of meeting her Lord and Saviour. As she always did, we know she will be busy working on the preparations for her surviving family to join her in Heaven shortly. Everything must be swept and cleaned by Joyce's expectations before it's ready for her "babies."

Those she is planning to reunite with on the freshly swept golden streets include her loving husband of 57 years, Hubert "Hubie" Bass of Georges Creek. Joyce and Hubie spent many memorable times in their early years around local race tracks, while camping in Pocahontas County and, most recently, their winters in Eustis, Fla. Most of all, at their little church beside the road, Mary Virginia Gospel Tabernacle on Georges Creek, where she loved to play the piano and sing with the choir or the Messengers for Christ, which she traveled with for 13 years. Joyce is forever proud of her two children, Hubert "Rusty" Bass Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Kenna; and Kathy Holmes and her husband, Mark, of Malden. However, it was the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, "my babies," who were the true apples of Mamaw Joyce's eyes, as they affectionately called her. Kevin (Jennifer) Bass and his son, Isaac, of Campbells Creek; Melissa (Brian) Sigmon and her two daughters, Brianna and Sarah, of Georges Creek; Randy (Amanda) Campbell and his son, Lane; and Joyce's "grandson"/nephew, Adam (Joellen) and his sons, Wyatt and Walker, and daughter, AnnaLee, shall rest assured that Mamaw Joyce will be watching over them every day from Heaven. Joyce will also be keeping a keen eye on her siblings, too. Her brothers, William "Arbie" Lucas and his wife, Sue, and Eddie and his wife, Louise, all of Georges Creek; and her sister, Dreama Kay Jarrell of Valparaiso, Ind., will still be on Mamaw's watch. Joyce's sisters-in-law, Juanita of Mill Creek and Linda of Poca, need not worry, for Mamaw will be watching over them, too. Mamaw Joyce also entrusts many nieces and nephews and a whole host of friends to carry on her legacy with all of her family.

The family would also like to especially thank Dr. Jack Kinder, Dr. Donald Lilly and his nurse, Sue Nolan, and the nurses of CAMC Memorial and CAMC General Emergency Department for their excellent care and exceptional support during our difficult times over the last few months. Special thanks to Donida of the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority for her words of encouragement, care and concern in our time of need.

The service will be Wednesday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at Mary Virginia Gospel Tabernacle with longtime family friend, the Rev. Sam Bays, and grandson, Randy Campbell, officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

The family will be blessed sharing Joyce's life with friends at Stevens and Grass Funeral Home, Malden from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

"Remember, grandmothers and mothers never leave us, they only take to watching over us from a different vantage point."

Flowers, gifts and the online guestbook for Mrs. Bass may be accessed at www.stevensandgrass.com.
