48017 When a young man, Bennett Ebenezer Bassett attended a select school in Farmer Village taught by P.C. Headley, on the corner of Seneca Street and West Avenue. Here he met Matilda Wheeler, also a pupil. Later he taught school at Covert, New York, and she was one of his pupils there, and he boarded at her home. Their acquaintance ripened into love and they were married. The Bassetts and Wheelers both migrated to Seneca County about the same time.
The year 1850 saw the breaking up of the farm home of Lemuel and Julia Bassett, and the beginning for themselves of the sons Bennett and Jared. The time came when the two brothers must decide on their farms. The roadway divided their father's farm into nearly equal parts; the upper tract was the better land, but there was no good house on it. Which one was to have the upper farm and which the lower? They settled the matter by "drawing cuts", and the lower farm fell to Bennett. Jared bought only 70 acres on the start, paying $50 per acre.
Bennett's farm contained 101 acres, 3 roods and 23 rods of land, and a stipulation in his deed contained these words: "The said party of the second part is to have the privilege of conducting the water from the spring on lot No. 40 in the same manner as now conducted by the party of the first part".
This clause referred to a system of running water then in use by which water ran in the kitchen of the old house by means of a lead pipe leading from a spring on the south side of the upper farm near the Severn woods.
Bennett continued to use the water for several years, when it was abandoned. A few years after purchasing the farm, he sold to Hamilton Mundy a strip of woodland on the eastern side containing about fourteen and one-half acres.

Jared Beardsley Bassett (brother of Bennett Bassett) was married to Mary Wheeler whose father was Nathan Beech Wheeler.
Bennett Basset (brother of Jared Beardsley Bassett) was married to Matilda Wheeler whose father was Lyman Wheeler.
Nathan Beech Wheeler and Lyman Wheeler were brothers.

Florence Marie Bassett Daniel
August 4, 1950 ? May 1, 2012 (Kansas City)

Florence Marie Bassett Daniel was born August 5, 1950 in Garden City, Kansas to Richard Loren and Betty Francis Hubbard Bassett. She was the second of four children. Her siblings were Richard, Barbara, and Robert Bassett. Florence grew up on a farm outside of Hamilton, Mo, and graduated from J.C. Penny High School, near the J.C. Penny farm in 1968. She attended Trenton Jr. College School of Nursing and received her LPM degree. The college had classes that met in a local radio station building. Florence chose the LPN instead of the RN because at the time the LPN's worked more with the patients while RN's were more dispensers of the meds. Florence began her career as a nurse in 1973 and worked for a year at Trenton Memorial Hospital. She then began working at NKC hospital where she stayed the rest of her working career. On Jul 14, 1973 Florence was united in marriage to Steve Daniel whom she had met at the Dairy Queen in Trenton. To the union was born one child, Serena Lee. Through a visit by Pastor Olen and Ed Collier in 1973 Florence was saved and shortly after began to attend Avondale Baptist Church. She was baptized one year later on her first wedding anniversary, July 14, 1974. She and Steve then joined the church and began to serve the Lord there. Florence truly had a heart for the Avondale Baptist Church AWANA program. She was committed to this important ministry with children. On May 1, 2012 at 3:35 PM she went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Obituary

The deceased, Frank Merton Bassett, was born in the town of Independence, on the 11th day of January, 1853.
He received his early education at Alfred and Woodhull academy, remaining about a year at each place. With such preparation and qualification for the duties of public life, on the 1st of March 1876 he was united in marriage with Miss Hortense Manning, with whom he has lived happily till death did them part. His first business venture was at Greenwood, where he remained eight years and then removed to Whitesville, where he had prosecuted business continuously and successfully for thirteen years, until death released him on the morning of March 4th, 1897, in his 44th year.
Mr. Bassett has not only established a good business reputation during all these years, but has also endeared himself to this community by his genial spirit and manly virtues. He made profession of religion at Greenwood during the pastorate of Rev. C.R. Buck, but did not connect himself with any church, but during his residence here, he has not only contributed freely but liberally for church and benevolent purposes and during my pastorate, has at least once every Sabbath, been an observant and interested attendant at the public worship of God.
Mr. Bassett was a good citizen, public spirited and patriotic and an intelligent and deeply interested observer of the tendency of public events that would naturally make or mar the tranquility and prosperity of the nation.
He invariably supported all measures calculated to promote the common good of the community, such as schools, churches, temperance, peace and order.
He was a good and kind neighbor, a firm friend, a devoted husband, and indulgent parent, a genial companion and at all times just, liberal and kind. At his funeral the representatives of varied benevolent orders of which he was a member, by their presence and emblems of sorrow gave significant expression to the fact that he was a brother beloved and the unusual attendance of the first citizens at his last obsequies clearly indicated the estimation in which he was held by the community. Rev. H. Vosburgh.
