Death - Bassett
Mr. W. Bassett, a very old New Plymouth settler, died at the age of 89 years. He was for many years engaged in farming, among his children are Mr. Bassett, contractor, Wanganui, and the wife of the Rev. J. Clover, of Stratford. Deceased was a native of Cornwall, and a warm adherent of Primitive Methodism.

Wanganui: Bassett, William George - Page 1362
Councillor William George Bassett was born in New Plymouth, Taranaki, where, though too young for active service, he and his parents passed through the exciting vicissitudes of the native war. In 1868, allured by the exciting reports from the Thames gold fields, he left his native town for that district, where he remained some three years, part of the time following his trade as a carpenter. He then returned to Taranaki and entered into business there with Mr. R. Rundle, sen., as general contractors. Some years later, the firm of Rundle and Bassett securing the contract for the Wanganui Railway Bridge, councillor Bassett established his headquarters in that town. In 1880 he constructed some seven or eight miles of permanent railway in the district between Stratford and Eltham. At a later date he was again the successful tenderer for the construction of the line between Hawera and Mokoia, a distrance of seven or eight miles. The railway bridge at Pohangina was also undertaken by him. This is an iron structure of 640 feet in length. Councillor Bassetts' private residence is at St. John's Hill, and, though, still continuing his business as a contractor, he has recently established himself in Wilson Street as a timber merchant. He has served the public as a member of the local school committee, and of the Licensing committee.

Obituary

John T. Bass was born January 18th, 1877, in Thomasville, Ga., and died in Galveston, Texas, Oct. 8th, 1897.
To us, who knew and loved the boy, these two dates mean so much. Separated, as they are, by not quite twenty-one years, they tell us the story of a busy, cheerful life, and a noble, sunny-tempered boy, now buried from our sight, but no from our hearts.
Young as he was, he had yet seen much of the real battled of life, and had passed through severe temptations, such as try the hearts of older men.
Three years ago, after his father?s death, the family moved to California, and while there, John contracted consumption and suffered much through the rest of his life.
He came to Galveston, Texas, in June, 1897, and while he seemed active and hopeful at times, his tale of life was already told; the disease was already too far advanced to look for human help.
Although a stranger in Galveston, John made friends of all who came near and saw the cheerful patience with which he bore his suffering.
Some days before his death he acknowledged the comfort of Christianity in his heart, and we who are left are thankful that the lamp of hope lighted the cark pathway each of us must some day tread alone.
His mother was in Atlanta, Ga., and quite ill herself at the time of John?s death, and it was pitiful to see how he longed for one more earthly glimpse of her face. He talked calmly and sweetly of death and passed away as gently as a child sinks to sleep.
The remains were taken to Thomasville, Ga., and buried beside his father and grandfather. His grandmother ministered to his last wants and felt that her prayers for the boy were answered, when she asked him if the way was clear and he answered with his last breath, ?yes, grandmother.? His cousin, Mrs. J.R. Morton, Galveston, Tex.

Robert Dalglish Bassett (Picture included)

Robert Dalglish Bassett Former Walpole School Superintendent age 87, died peacefully on Saturday, February 29, 2020 in Warwick, Rhode Island. He was born in Taunton (he was really born in Boston), Massachusetts, the son of Clarence Eustus Bassett and Clarissa Gray (Buffum) Bassett, and the stepson of J. Russell Edgerton. His life was filled with outdoor adventures, a steadfast commitment to the public good, and dedication to family. Bob graduated from Dartmouth College Hanover, New Hampshire in 1954 where he earned his A.B. in Botany and was an active member of the outing and glee clubs. He attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, completing his Master of Arts in Teaching in 1955, and taught science in the Manhasset, New York, public schools, also serving as chairperson for Science & Mathematics. Bob met his wife, Suzanne Posson Bassett, in Cambridge, MA and they were married in 1963. Bob continued at Harvard, conducting research for the Massachusetts Education Commission, and in 1968 completed his Ed.D. He joined the Walpole, MA. public schools as Assistant Superintendent in 1965, and advanced to serve as the Superintendent of Schools through 1982. Throughout these 17 years of advocacy for Walpoles teachers and students, some of Bobs greatest professional satisfaction came from mentoring young teachershe hired as many as 80 new teachers in a yearand implementing progressive, experiential education inclusive of all students. Following his years in the public schools, Bob worked at the Boston Museum of Science with educators from across the Northeast. From a young age Bob attended Camp Lanakila on Lake Morey in Vermont. He later worked there as a counselor, and it was there that he honed his knowledge of camp craft and of the White Mountains, but more importantly, developed leadership skills and commitment to community. Continuing to this day, the network of Aloha Foundation summer camps, of which Lanakila is one, is a second home for four generations of Bobs family. Environmental stewardship is foundational to Bobs legacy, and he will be remembered for teaching all the campers about the Appalachian Mountains establishing the environmental education program in Walpoles elementary schools, coordinating groups to clean up public land, wilderness camping with his family, and tending to his bountiful vegetable and flower gardens.

In retirement, Bob was a fervent genealogist, diving deep into historical research, well before the advent of internet search engines. He frequented the New England Genealogical Society in Boston to locate original documents and scoured cemeteries in the Northeast to explore New England colonial history and the fascinating stories within every family. He was one of the first in the country to join a DNA bank tracing genealogical roots and was a prolific contributor to Bassett genealogy projects worldwide. Hiking and birding trips took Bob and Sue to the tundra of Alaska and the rainforest of Costa Rica. Bob was an active member of the United Church in Walpole for over 50 years. Several years after Sues passing, Bob moved to Warwick, Rhode Island to live with his daughter Katherine. Bob is survived by his daughter Sarah and her husband Paul Mackey of Needham, MA; daughter Katherine and her husband Richard Kavanagh of Warwick, RI; daughter Carolyn and her husband F. Lewis Goff of Pelham, MA; and beloved grandchildren Dana Heino, Brandon and Steven Kavanagh, Willem Goff, Ian and Ronan Mackey, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother David Bassett of Rochester, NY, and his twin sister Elizabeth Bassett Wolf of Palo Alto, CA. He was predeceased by his wife Suzanne in 2002. Expressions of sympathy in Bobs memory may be donated to the Aloha Foundation at alohafoundation.org/give/. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church in Walpole (30 Common Street). Burial will take place at a later date in Walpole. Hydrophobia Feared

Alarming symptoms from a dog bite sustained Saturday by J.E. Bass, of 1806 Bainbridge Street, have led the attending physicians to declare Mr. Bass in danger of hycrophobia, and to order him rushed to the Pasteur Institute in Washington to undergo a course of treatment. The physicians believe that unless Mr. Bass takes advantage of the treatment his death may result.
Mr. Bass was bitten Saturday while shearing a dog sent him by a South Richmonder, and at first paid little attention to the wound. Soon after, however, it began to swell and become inflamed, and a physician was called ijn to administer treatment. Hydrophobia was not at first feared, but developments yesterday pointed to possible rabies, and Mr. Bass will be hurried to Washington.
According to the owner of the dog, he has never exhibited a vicious or dangerous disposition and the news that he had bitten Mr. Bass came as a surprise. The dog itself is now under close surveillance for signs of rabies, and it is probable that it will be killed on the first indication of the fatal disease.
Mr. Bass is a blacksmith and horse shearer by trade.

He Cut His Own Throat
Mr. L.W. Bass Found Dead at Brother?s Home.
No Reason For the Act

The cause of the death of Lebins W. Bass remains a mystery. A short while ago he went to Holly Springs from near Manchester to take charge of Major Watkins? horses. He was considered one of the the best horse handlers in this section of the country, and came from a horse raising family.
Early yesterday morning he was found near the stables with his throat cut by his brother, E.T. Bass, who lived on the farm also. There is no explanation of the death, except that for some time Mr. Bass had been suffering with mental trouble superinduced by strong drink. The theory of murder was dissipated by the fact that there was no possible theory for such a crime. He had no enemies, nor did he carry any amount of money, and the fact that his pockets did not bear out the theory of robbery is another reason for disbelieving the theory of murder.
Coroner Loving examined the remains and turned them over to Undertake Morrisette, who prepared them for burial.
Mr. Bass had no immediate family. His brother, Mr. E..T. Bass, is also a well known horseman.
The funeral will be this morning at 11 o?clock from the home, in charge of Undertaker Morrisette, and the interment will be in Maury Cemetery.
Mr. Bass was forty-three years old and unmarried. He leaves three brothers ? Messrs. E.T. Bass, of Chesterfield; James Bass, of Petersburg, and William Bass, of Richmond.

Sally Bassett (Picture included)

Lexington - Sally Ann Reid McFarlane Bassett died October 19, 2019 at the home of her courageous daughter some months after a recurrence of cancer. She maintained her independence throughout all but the last months of her 87 year life, which she credited to long walks, Lutheran judgment and stoicism, exercise, and always having washed organic vegetables on which to snack in her refrigerator. She contradicted her own experience by often making double marshmallow Rice- Krispy treats for her grandchildren, Isaiah Wilson-McFarlane, and Aaron Benjamin Wilson-McFarlane. We joked that she would live forever and at the same time was trying to kill us with love, ladies' aide casseroles, and marshmallows.

Sally was a teacher for 41 years, the longest stretch in the Sandusky Schools at Maple Valley Elementary School where she took great pride teaching children to become readers. She was a lifelong member of Beta Tau, a service organization of teachers who focused on literacy and service throughout her life, to which we encourage memorial contributions in lieu of flowers.

Sally was a pioneer, a skilled teacher with a master's degree, who pursued her craft to the benefit of learners. She had two children, Patrick McFarlane, of Orono, Maine and Lesli McFarlane-McCarthy (Kevin McCarthy) of Davenport, Florida. She was born on a farm in Deckerville, Michigan to Freida and Clifford Reid. She attended Concordia College in Illinois and then Eastern Michigan University for graduate school. Her elder sister and brother, Betty Reid-Scott and Walter Reid predeceased her. She was a steady sender of birthday and holiday cards, was renown and beloved as great and/or great-great Aunt Sally to many nieces, nephews and cousins among the children of her siblings, as well as to her adult step children Judy, Jeannie, and Jim Bassett, to whom she took like a pig in a poke, and to whom she fed prodigious holiday meals all in the service of family. She was a life-long a Missouri Synod Lutheran, often mimicking Martin Luther's list of demands by leaving her own list for those she loved. She lived most of the last part of her life in Naples and then Winter Haven, Florida perches from which she seemed to relish contrasting her weather with those of us in a more northern latitude.

She is to be interred with her partner, Evert Bassett at the Christian Memorial Cemetery in Peck, Michigan. A brief service to celebrate her life will be held at the Pomeroy Funeral Home Friday November 1, 2019 at 1pm, with a viewing starting at 11am that morning. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Beta Tau either at the memorial or written to Beta Tau, %Betty Brown, Treasurer, 50 Dell Street Sandusky, Michigan 48471.
