Perkins Bass
October 27, 2011
Former New Hampshire Congressman Perkins Bass, 99, of Peterborough died peacefully Oct. 25, 2011, at his home of old age.
The oldest son of Governor Robert P. Bass and Edith B. Bass, he was born in East Walpole, Massachusetts, October 6, 1912. He attended the Arizona Desert School in Tucson, and the Milton (Massachusetts) Academy, where he was recently honored as the only surviving member of his class. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1934 and from Harvard School of Law, where he earned his law degree in 1937. He was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in January 1938.
From 1942 to 1945, Mr. Bass served his country in the 14th Army Air Forces in China as a major in air combat intelligence under the command of General Clare Chennault of the Flying Tigers. He was decorated with the Bronze Star as well as the “Yun Ma” medal from the Nationalist government of China.
He was a founding partner in the Manchester law firm of Sheehan Phinney Bass and Green, practicing there until his election to the U.S. Congress in 1954. After his retirement from politics, he continued to practice law in his hometown for many years. Prior to his election to Congress, Mr. Bass served in the New Hampshire State Senate as its president and in the New Hampshire General Court. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1962. In later years, he was appointed and then elected selectman in the town of Peterborough.
He was married to Katharine Jackson Bass from 1941 until her death in 1972. He subsequently was married for 38 years to Rosaly Swann Bass, often remarking that her presence in his life kept him young, happy, engaged and vital. They traveled extensively and also worked together on her organic vegetable business.
Survivors include his wife of Peterborough; his five children, Alexander Bass of Peterborough, Katharine B. Cloud of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, William J. Bass of Washington, D.C., and Charles F. Bass and Posy Bass, both of Peterborough; his two stepsons, George R. Riley and Matthew B. Riley, both of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Over the years, Mr. Bass celebrated many milestones in his life. As he grew older he often quoted a favorite passage from the poem “Ulysses,” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, a quote that personified his view of his place in the world through the passage of time:
"Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are -"
All are welcome to attend a celebration of his life and a luncheon on Saturday, November 19, at noon at the Monadnock Country Club. Jellison Funeral Home of Peterborough is in charge of arrangements.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mr. Bass’ memory to the Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter (MATS), P.O. Box 3053, Peterborough 03458; or to the Salvation Army, in care of James Grant, 10 Sharon Road, Peterborough 03458.

Austin Wayne Bassett (1928 ? 2019) (Picture included)

Austin Wayne Bassett passed away May 4th, 2019 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri. Wayne was born December 5, 1928 to Austin Bassett and Eda (Luce) Bassett of Moulton, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Alice Katherine Eby on February 12, 1950. He is survived by his two daughters: Pamela Brand (Dr. Ronald) of Kirksville, Missouri and Terri Bassett (Frank Hein) of Ventura, California.

Wayne graduated from high school in Davis County, Iowa and farmed a small acreage there early in his marriage. He and his wife were members of the Moulton Methodist Church where Wayne could often be found singing at weddings and funerals. He also served in the Army National Guard becoming a second lieutenant. Later he and his wife Katherine owned and operated a family newspaper, The Moulton Tribune, in Moulton, Iowa from 1961 to 1977. He joined the third generation of his wife's family to do so. He and Katherine did it all ? from linotype operation and editing to sales and printing. This operation gave rise to a photography business - Bassett Photo where he and Katherine specialized in wedding photography and were responsible for recording the happy unions of many Moultonites.

In 1977 the Tribune was sold, but Bassett Photo continued to thrive allowing Wayne time to pursue his lifelong interest in airplanes. However, Wayne sustained serious injuries in a plane crash the following year. After a long recovery period, he overcame those injuries and returned to college to graduate in 1983 beside his daughter Terri from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman) in Kirksville, MO. He graduated with a BSE in Physics, a subject he loved, and thought lost to him. Wayne taught briefly at Moulton-Udell High School, then in 1985 Wayne and Katherine started a new adventure. They moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he studied electrical engineering at the University of Dayton School of Engineering. After his graduation in 1987 the couple made their home in Warner-Robins, Georgia with Wayne working as an engineer for the U.S. Air Force at Robins Air Force Base until his retirement in 2006.

Wayne maintained a fascination with mathematics and aeronautics throughout his life, but it was singing that brought him the greatest joy. He was still singing for his family from his hospital bed only a few days before his passing. He overcame all the obstacles thrown his way to achieve much in his long life. He will be missed by his family and friends. A private graveside service will be held in Moulton, Iowa, May 10th, 2019. Late in life Wayne became an avid birder, so in lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to the Audubon Society in his honor.

Since coming to Knoxville, Mr. Bass had been the guest of his son, Fred Bass, 928 Seventeenth street. He was fond of outdoor life and devoted much time to walking. We went for long hikes every morning and afternoon.
He had enjoyed his morning walk and returned to the home of his son for dinner. He was uptown walking and went into the Farragut hotel and was sitting in a chair when stricken with apoplexy.
When Mr. Bass left the home of his son he was apparently enjoying robust health. he was alert and walked with quick steps. His appearance did not indicate that he was in the seventies. It was said last night that Mr. Bass had never been ill during his life.

Jessie Good Bassett McWhirter, 97

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. ? Jessie (Goodwin) Bassett McWhirter, formerly of Laconia, died December 1, 2004 in Florida at the age of 97 years and 3 months. She was born in Beachmont, Mass. on September 1, 1907, the first of six children to Eva LeJeune (Young) and Walter L. Goodwin. She leaves her husband, Kenneth McWhirter of Florida; a daughter, Betty-Jeanne (Bassett) Maheux and her husband, Paul L. Maheux of Laconia; one son, Donald F. Bassett and his wife Marie of St. Cloud, Fla.; her only grandson, Gedeon P. Maheux of Greensboro and Colfax, N.C.; a brother, Edwin Goodwin of Holiday, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Jessie graduated as an A+ student from Laconia High School in 1925. She took up bookkeeping and hairdressing and worked with Hairdo?s of Marcel in the 1920s and early '30s using hot curling irons. To help support her family she started waitressing at the Lakeport Hotel, the former ?Crystal? in downtown Laconia and the Laconia Tavern with its lavish dining room. When Mr. King opened his new Chinese restaurant on South Main St., Jessie served as the manager for the first year in Mr. King?s absence. Also in the 1940s, Jessie and her late husband, Franklin E. Bassett, worked at Scott & Williams Co in Lakeport. During World War II she was honored and awarded seven times for inventions she created to help speed along the building of needed parts for airplanes and other equipment used in the war effort. She eventually started her own restaurant by purchasing ?Perrys? in Busy Corner Square. Known as ?Jessie?s Restaurant?, she became the first to offer a horseshoe counter in the middle of the floor, surrounded by booths and also offered the first black and white television for her customers to view while dining. Many of her customers were employed at Scott & Williams as well as a number of motorcyclists that were starting to come to the area for the early motorcycle rallies. She also opened another restaurant next-door in the old Normandin Apartment House called ?The Rain Room?, which featured a neon sign with a rainbow on it. She was known for her bubbling smile, and for the restaurant's great food, handsome interior and elegant servings that included finger bowls served with her fried chicken and giant sized onion rings. Jessie lobbied for many hours at the statehouse in Concord over a period of several years for legislation that would allow dining restaurants to sell liquor to patrons. Following the passage of this legislation NH restaurants experienced a boom in business. In 1956, Jessie married Kenneth McWhirter in Florida and operated a restaurant and motel until she retired when she was almost 80 years of age. Never one to stop, she purchased an organ to learn to play pieces of music and at the age of 87, she bought a computer so that she could keep in touch with her grandson. She continued her hobbies and made over 200 dolls, some with real hairpieces, and donated them to the local fire department in Florida to distribute as Christmas gifts for children. She also created her own greeting cards of all sorts and wrote poems to send or sell. Of her, her family writes, ?Jess was a giving person?.

Obituary ? Medical News
Henry Thurstan Bassett, M.B. Lond, M.R.C.S.

Particulars have recently reached us respectring the death of Dr. H.T. Bassett, which occurred at the early age of thirty-three at Steytierville, near Ultenhage, Cape Colony, on Sept. 8th. Dr. H.T. Bassett was the son of Dr. John Bassett of Birmingham, and commenced his medical studies at the Queen?s College in that city, whence he passed to Guy?s Hospital, where he went through the usual medical curriculum, and occupited the various offices assigned to students, ending by being house physician to Dr. Moxon. During this time he graduated at the University of London in the honours division. After spending a winter in Vienna he eturned to his native city and joined his father in practice. He was elected honorary surgeon to the Skin and Lock Hospital, and when farily established he married, and had abright prospect before him. In the spring of 1888, after an arduous winter?s work, his healt failed. It was thought imperative that he should try a warmer climate; he accordingly went to South Africa, and settled in a rising village in the Karoo. Here his healt for a time greatly improved, and he son acquired a larage and lucrative practice; but his pulmonary symptons never became quit quiescent. A few months since they reappeared, and after a period of ver-increasing weakness he passed away. The Uitenhage Chronicle says of him : ?Dr. THurstan Bassett was gifted with a pleasing exterior; he also possessed a quiet and impressive manner and well-store mind. Those among whom his lot was cast, and among whom he died, became not only his patients but his frends. Urbane and sympathetic, he will long live in the memories of those who sincerely regret the loss of a brilliant physician and faithful friend.?
