On attaining a sufficient age, he served an apprenticeship to the harness-making trade. When he was but nine years of age, the death of his father, Francis Bassett, occurred and he was early thrown upon his own resources. On the expiration of his term of apprenticeship, he left his home and went to Troy, N.Y., where for one year he worked at this trade and then started for the West. His destination was Fond du Lac, and the year 1856 witnessed his arrival in the county where the greater part of his life has since been passed. On coming ot this city he looked about him for some employment and in a short time engaged to work for John Jusgat, with whom he remained for about eighteen months. Owing to the financial depression then existing and the consequent low prices for work, he decided to go elsewhere, and for a time engaged in harness-making in Chicago. Leaving that city after a few months, he again started out in search of employment and spent four years in the sunny South, working in many of the principal cities, including St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans. In 1860 he once more came to Fond du Lac, and embarked in business for himself, since which time he has been continuously engaged in harness-making in this city, covering a period of almost thirty years. Several years ago he purchased the property on Court Street which he now owns, and in connection with his store building is also the owner of three other buildings with a livery stable in the rear. In 1860 Mr. Bassett was joined in wedlock with Miss Julia Snow, the wedding being celebrated in Fond du Lac. Mrs. Bassett was born in this city and is a daughter of Isadore Snow, one of the pioneer settlers of Fond du Lac County, who became a resident of this community ere a single building marked the site of the present thriving city. The country was then in an almost uncultivated condition and the trading point for the settlers in this immediate vicinity was at Taycheedah. Mr. Snow was a prominent and influential citizen and made his home in Fond du Lac County until his death. He was killed in a terrible railroad accident during which a party of excursionists lost their lives. The family circel of Mr. and Mrs. Bassett was completed by the birth of eight children, five sons and three daughters. George was the eldest of the family; Francis is engaged in harness making at Red Jacket, Mich.; Fred is living at Pke City, Mont.; Isadore is in the employ of his father; and Eugene is the youngest child of the family. The daughters are Mary, Mrs. Joseph Bassett, who removed with her husband to Montana, where her death occurred; Julia and Clara. The mother of this family was called to her final home in 1882. Mr. Bassett is one of the leading business men of Fond du Lac, and is proprietor of a most important industry. For more than a third of a century he has been engaged in the harness business, and to his own efforts can be attributed the success to which he has attained. He is a worthy and respected citizen and possesses the confidence and esteem of the entire community in which he has so long made his home. He is a supporter of the Republican party, though he has never sought office at the hands of that party. | Bassett, Israel (I1356)
