GREENFIELD – Arthur Wallace Bessette, 83, of 44 Warner St., retired mason, died Saturday in a local nursing home. Born in Turners Falls, the son of Arthur and Delena (Young) Bessette, he leaves his wife, the former Marcia C. Holdsworth; a daughter, two brothers, and two sisters. The funeral will be Tuesday from the McCarthy funeral home, with burial in Springdale Cemetery.

Arthur C. Bessette

Turners Falls, June 17 – Arthur Charles Bessette, 85, of Madison Ave., died late last night at the Farren Memorial Hospital. He was born in Canada on Oct. 13, 1867, the son of Honore and Eudoxie (Montez) Bessette and had lived in this town for the past 65 years. He was a retired mason, a charter member of the Eagles and a charter member of St. Jean de Baptiste Society. He leaves his wife, the former Delana Young; four sons, Winslow of New London, Conn., Harold of Springfield, Charles of Turners Falls, and Arthur C. Bessette Jr., of Greenfield; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Disautel of Riverside and Mrs. Mildred Gosselin of Baltimore, Md., 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will take place Friday morning at 8 at the McCarthy funeral home, with a requiem high mass at 8.30 in St. Ann’s Church. Burial will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

Arthur married Delana Young. Delana (daughter of Elijah Young and Julia Robertson (Robidon) Young) was born on 22 Jun 1871 in Connecticut; died on 11 Sep 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland; was buried on 14 Sep 1962 in St. Anne's Cemetery, Catonsville. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

TURNERS FALLS – Mrs. Delena Bessette, 91, of Catonsville, Md., formerly of this town died Tuesday in St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Md. She was born in Connecticut June 22, 1871, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Young. She had been a resident of Catonsville for the past seven years, formerly having lived here for 83 years where she was a member of St. Anne’s Church. She was the widow of Arthur C. Bessette. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Gosselin of Catonsville, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Jennie Desautells of Riverside, Calif.; four sons, Arthur of Greenfield, Charles of this town, Harold of Springfield and Winslow of New London, Conn.; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8 at the McCarthy funeral home here with a requiem high mass at 8.30 in St. Anne’s Church. Burial will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery. Visiting hours are tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
