Wabash Plain Dealer, January 24, 1906
Captain Thomas Bassett, Formerly of Versailles
Died in Peoria, Ill. Saturday Morning.

Captain Thomas Bassett, a veteran of both the Mexican and civil wars, died Saturday morning at 8 o?clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Connard, xxxx North Madison avenue, Peoria, Ill., after an illness of several months. Death was due to a complication of diseases contracted while in the services of his country.
Captain Bassett was a member of one of the most patriotic families in the United States, which has furnished many soldiers for the various conflicts in which the country has been engaged. The grandfather of Captain Bassett was a soldier in the Revolution under George Washington, his father a soldier of the war of 1812, he of both the Mexican and civil wars, and his two sons, Robert and John, both serving in the Philippines.
Captain Bassett went to Peoria from Versailles only last March, Indiana being his home state. During his short resident in Peoria he became acquainted with the few remaining soldiers of the Mexican war and enjoyed their associations. He enlisted for service on the southwestern frontier in the Mexican war as a private in the Fourth Indiana regiment, and in the civil war was a captain in the Ninth battalion.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Arthur Beck, Mrs. Frank Connard, Robert and Fred Bassett, all of Peoria, and Mrs. Belle Roberts, of Minneapolis.
The funeral services were held at two o?clock, Monday afternoon, at 1019 North Madison avenue, in charge of the W.R.C. The interment was made in Springdale cemetery, Peoria.

The Battle of River Raisin January 22, 1813 (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyfrankl/r-raisin.htm)
The most dire calamity that ever befell the people of Franklin County happened during this decade (1810-1820). The history of the war Between the United States and Great Britain; the causes which led up to and the sequences which followed are a part of national history. The United States army in the northwest was composed almost exclusively of Kentuckians, a history of which is properly a part of history of the State. Franklin County, however, did more than just proportional part. She furnished more men, and more money, and she gave more of her heroic blood for the honor and glory of this great country than could have reasonably been expected from one community.
Two full companies enlisted from Franklin County, the first under Paschel or Perchal Hickman. As Captain he was mustered into the service, August 15, 1812 and his company was known as Captain Paschel Hickman's Company, first rifle regiment, Kentucky Militia. It was engaged on October 14, 1812.
The eight-six men composing this company were all killed at the Battle of the River Raisin, except thirteen of them. Only twelve of whom are known at this date to have returned to their homes in Franklin County; Lieut. Peter Dudley, Alexander Rennick, Joseph Clark, Lewis Fenwick, Elisha Herndon, John A. Holton, Z. B. Lewis, Francis Mayhall, John Mayhall, John Richardson, Alexander Robertson and James Wilson.

My Hortons were in Ripley County at this time, as was this other Horton family. I am trying to find a link between the two. Josiah and Elizabeth Bassett are mentioned as the primary benefactors in the will of James Horton in 1861. Now I know that Elizabeth was his daughter...thanks! I'd like to know more about your Bassett family if you can email me at ned@hortongroup.com. My website has some Ripley County data as well. Thanks again.
