\nOld Market House Destroyed By Fire
\nFlames Wipe Out the Delaware Avenue Structure Above Vine Street
\nThe Loss About $30,000
\nFireman Succeed in Keeping the Fire Within Bounds
\nSaving Much Valuable Nearby Property<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The old Delaware avenue market house, between Vine and Callowhill, and extending through to Water street, was destroyed by fire last evening. The origin of the fire is unknown. The building was owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and was insured.<\/p>\n
Several produce merchants who had their places of business in the building lost their entire stock. They were Isaac Powell, 309; Disheron & Laws, 311, and Charles Bassett, 313 North Water street. The next store, at 315 North Water street, was occupied by Gatley\u2019s restaurant, while 317 and 319 were vacant. The loss to the restaurant will about to over $5000.<\/p>\n
When the fire was discovered Mrs. Annie Gatley, with her two children, Dora, aged 8 years, and John, aged 10 years, together with her brother, John McNeil, were sleeping in the rooms above the restaurant, but all managed to escape without any difficulty.<\/p>\n
WATCHMAN\u2019S PROMPT ACTION<\/p>\n
The flames were first discovered by Louis Bott, a private watchman. That was at 8.10. He rushed to the restaurant and aroused the inmates, after which he turned in an alarm. The interior of the market is nothing more nor less than one big room, and by the time the engines arrived the building was a mass of flames. At 8.16 the second and third alarms were turned in, and the firemen turned their attention to the adjoining properties. At 8.20 the roof fell. Owing to the high wind the firemen feared that the flames would sweep to the adjoining buildings, but after half an hour\u2019s work they succeeded in extinguishing the fire. The loss is estimated at between $23,000 and $30,000.<\/p>\n
The fire is said to have first started on the Delaware avenue side of the building near the office of the watchman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
