{"id":692,"date":"2016-02-21T15:00:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-21T23:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bassettbranches.org\/newsblog\/?p=692"},"modified":"2016-02-21T15:00:29","modified_gmt":"2016-02-21T23:00:29","slug":"leslie-raymond-bassett-pulitzer-prize-winner-for-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bassettbranches.org\/newsblog\/leslie-raymond-bassett-pulitzer-prize-winner-for-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Leslie Raymond Bassett, Pulitzer Prize winner for Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leslie Raymond Bassett descended from #44B Emanuel Bassett of St. Enoder, Cornwall as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Emanuel Bassett (d. 1676) and wife Grace<br \/>\nThomas Bassett (b. 1628) and wife Lowdy<br \/>\nJohn Bassett (b. 1758) and wife Phillipa Rickard<br \/>\nJohn Bassett (b. 1703) and wife Alice Banallack<br \/>\nRichard Bassett (b. 1747) and wife Elizabeth Glyddon<br \/>\nRichard Bassett (b. 1772) and wife Jeniger Davis<br \/>\nJohn Davies Bassett (b. 1806) and wife Thamason Rowe<br \/>\nMark Bassett (b. 1848) and wife Helen Lander<br \/>\nArchibald Leslie Bassett (b. 1895) and wife Vera Vesta Starr<br \/>\nLeslie Raymond Bassett<\/p>\n<p>Leslie was an early participant in our Bassett DNA study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bassettbranches.org\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LeslieBassett.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-693\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-693 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bassettbranches.org\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LeslieBassett.jpg\" alt=\"LeslieBassett\" width=\"219\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a>Memorial Park Funeral Homes &amp; Cemeteries<br \/>\nLeslie Raymond Bassett<br \/>\nJanuary 22, 1923 \u2013 February 4, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Leslie Raymond Bassett, age 93 of Oakwood, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at his residence.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm at McEver Road United Methodist Church.\u00a0 Reverend Rob Bruce will officiate.\u00a0 The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 3 &#8211; 5 pm, after the service, at the Church.<\/p>\n<p>Leslie was born January 22, 1923 in Hanford, California to the late Archibald Leslie Bassett and Vera Vesta Starr Bassett.\u00a0 He was a WW II veteran and retired from a lengthy and distinguished career as a Professor of Music Composition at the University of Michigan.\u00a0 Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; his son Ralph Earle Bassett; and his brother, Earle Leonard Bassett.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Bassett was the University of Michigan\u2019s Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music and was the 1984 Henry Russel Lecturer, the University\u2019s highest faculty honor.\u00a0 He has received the Distinguished Artist Award from the State of Michigan; was named Distinguished Alumnus by his California <em>alma mater<\/em>, Fresno State, and by the University of Michigan\u2019s School of Music. He was awarded the major composer award and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has twice been the composer-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation\u2019s Bellagio Center.\u00a0 He received the 1966 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his <em>Variations for Orchestra<\/em>, premiered in Rome in 1963, followed two years later by its United States premier by the Philadelphia Orchestra under conductor Eugene Ormandy.\u00a0 He was a prolific composer with works widely performed and recorded by orchestras, bands, choirs and various ensembles and soloists throughout the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bassett is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Anita Denniston Bassett of Oakwood; daughter&amp; son-in-law, Wendy Bratton Baker &amp; R.
