\nSuicide of a Promoter
\nJ.R. Bassett of Denver Dies From the Effects of Morphine<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 J.R. Bassett of Denver, a mining promoter, broken in fortune and health, died in a rooming-house at 144 West Third South street Friday night as the result of an overdose of morphine, which he is believed to have taken with suicidal intent.<\/p>\n
He was president of the Irrigation, Mining and Land company of Denver. He had been here a month and had lived in a private room, where he had spent much of his time. He was about 60 years old.<\/p>\n
Bassett left the room about 6 o\u2019clock Friday, going out the back door, but returned in a few minutes and went to bed. The landlady had noticed prior to this time that he snored heavily when he slept and thought nothing wrong when he slept late and snored loudly. At 2 o\u2019clock Friday afternoon, however, she became frightened, as Bassett was still sleeping and was breathing heavily. Her husband went to the room and knocked, but received no response. He then went into the room and shook Bassett, who muttered, but could not be awakened. The landlady then became frightened and called Dr. Odell and Dr. Snyder, who worked over the unfortunate man until 8:30 o\u2019clock at night, when he died.<\/p>\n
Among Bassett\u2019s effects was found the following note, dated April 2, 1904: \u201cTo Whom It May Concern: In case of death I wish to be placed in a pine casket and if out of Denver, me remains be expressed to Denver and transferred only in an express wagon to the crematory, and for expenses notify Royal Arcanum lodge NO. 757, South Acton, Mass. Be me as my last request. (Signed) J.R. Bassett.\u201d<\/p>\n
