He was one of seven sons of Mr. Frederick Bassett, who had a seat on the London Board of Directors until his death in 1912. Four brothers survived Mr. Bromhead Bassett. Mr. Frederick Bassett built \u201cThe Knolls,\u201d Leighton Buzzard, and later lived at \u201cThe Heath.\u201d The founder of the bank, Mr. John Dollin Bassett lived at \u201cThe Cedars,\u201d now the Cedars School, and was one of the leading Quakers of his day.<\/p>\n<p>In 1854, the name of the bank became Bassett, Son and Harris, and this title remained unchanged until the amalgamation with Barclays Bank in 1896. Mr. Bromhead Bassett became a local director in 1898, and when the Leighton Buzzard District became part of the enlarged Luton District in 1921, he became a member of the Luton Local Board. The local head office had been transferred from St. Albans to Luton in 1917, in view of the rapidly increasing size and importance of the town, and then Leighton Buzzard was added to the Luton District in 1921, the Hitchin District was also added.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bromhead Bassett led a quiet and reserved life, and was seldom in the public eye, but before the war he often sat as a magistrate for Leighton Buzzard and Linslade, and followed the Whaddon Chase foxhounds. He married a sister of Mr. Percy Lovett, who was the Hunt Secretary for many years.
