\nOliver Bassett Died Suddenly Last Night<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Oliver H. Bassett, aged 68 years, one of Alexandria\u2019s oldest and most respected colored citizens died suddenly last night at his home 701 Ninth street, and the funeral will take place Sunday, the procession leaving the home at 3 p.m. and proceeding to Bethel A.M.E. Church for funeral service and interment will be made in Colored Methodist cemetery, Pineville.<\/p>\n
Oliver was one of the best known of Alexandria colored barbers, having conducted a shop in this city for over fifty-years. He enjoyed the respect and good will of all of the residents of Alexandria who knew him. He was a partner for the first twenty years of his career of the late Harrison Dennis. This firm Dennis & Bassett, was the most prominent barber shop in the city in the early days.<\/p>\n
Oliver Bassett is survived by his wife \u201cGoodie\u201d Bassett, one son and one daughter, Dr. O.H. Bassett, Jr. of this city and Vivian Kingston of Little Rock. He also leaves one sisters, Lizzie Kelsoe, widow of the late John Kelso.<\/p>\n
Oliver was a prominent member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, and of the following lodges: Silver Trowel No. 10, F.& A.M.; Rapides Progress No. 2526, Odd Fellows; Live Oak No. 25, K. of P.; Court of Colante No. 15; and Mosaic Templars of America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
