Owner, Dies<\/p>\n<p>Ernest Bassett, 82, 1715 W. Sycamore St., owner of the former Ernest Bassett Coal Co., died early Friday morning after an extended illness.<\/p>\n<p>Born Jan. 20, 1883, in Shelby County, he was the son of Marshall and Nora (Israel) Bassett.<\/p>\n<p>He attended school in Shelby County and had also taught school there.<\/p>\n<p>Coming to Kokomo in 1924, he worked for the W.O. Bassett Fuel Co. for several years then started the Ernest Bassett Coal Co., which he operated for 25 years. The company was located on South Home Avenue near the Delco Radio Division.<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 15, 1905, in Shelbyville he was married to Grace Bass, who survives. The couple would have observed their 60th wedding anniversary in February.<\/p>\n<p>A member of St. Luke&#8217;s EUB Church, he had served the church as Sunday School superintendent and had taught a Sunday School class for 30 years. The class was later name in his honor. He had also served in several other capacities at the church.<br \/>\nHe was a member of Howard Lodge No. 93 F and AM and the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Cosand and Mrs. Robert (Mary Ellen) Cooley, both of Kokomo; three sons, William of Shelbyville; Harold of Wabash, and Ralph of Marion; one brother W.O. Bassett, Phoenix, Ariz; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Jacobs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ivan R. Woods assisted by the Rev. DeWayne Bontrager officiating.
