\nThe Rev. E.D. Bassett honored by Fellow Pastors
\nRetiring M.E. Preacher Felicitated Upon His Work for Babylon Church
\nDuring Six Years Pastorate<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Babylon, L.I., March 27 \u2013 The Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and Episcopal churches of this village united last evening in a union farewell service to the Rev. Edward D. Bassett, pastor of the Methodist Church, who will be pastor of the Methodist Church of Springfield, L.I., after conference. The high regard in which the Rev. Mr. Bassett is held by the people of the community was shown by the fact that the Methodist Church in which the service was held was crowded to the doors.<\/p>\n
Prayer was said by the Rev. S. Paul Jefferson, pastor of the Baptist Church, following which the Rev. R.D. Merrill of the Presbyterian Church who, with the Rev. Mr. Bassett\u2019s leaving, becomes the senior pastor of the village, spoke of the work that his fellow pastor had done, stating that it should not be measured by the years of service nor by the tangible results, but by those intangible things accomplished in the spiritual life, which will endure forever.<\/p>\n
The Rev. John Good of Lindenhurst spoke of the pastor and extended wishes of good to come to the Rev. Mr. Bassett and to the church.<\/p>\n
The Rev. E.J. Burlingham, rector of Christ Episcopal Church of West Islip, expressed his best wishes for the pastor and his congregation, and hoped that the joyfulness and happiness of Christian work that in Babylon has been the lot of the Rev. Mr. Bassett will be his wherever he goes.<\/p>\n
The Rev. S. Paul Jefferson, speaking of the good fellowship and hearty co-operation which has existed between the pastors of the town, said that he was sorry to have his fellow pastor leave the village, but declared that in his new post he would put the richness of his years of Christian experience into the work of leading men and women into the Christian life.<\/p>\n
Leroy M. Young, for the official board of the church, spoke in appreciation of the work the Rev. Mr. Bassett has done while in his local pastorate.<\/p>\n
The Rev. Mr. Bassett bid farewell to his congregation in a few words, speaking of the good will and fellowship he had experienced in the community, and assuring his hearers that he would cherish fond memories of Babylon. He urged them to welcome his successor and to join with him for the furtherance of Christian work.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bassett was been pastor of the local Methodist Church for six years, during which time over $10,000 has been expended in improvements to the church property, and double that amount has been expended for benevolent purposes and general expenses. The membership of the church has been increased by over 125, and the church has had a great material and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n

\nRev. E.D. Bassett to Be Buried at Manlius<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rev. Edward D. Bassett, formerly of North Manlius and pastor of First Methodist Episcopal Church in Seymour, Conn., who died at his home there Tuesday, will be buried in North Manlius cemetery at 5 o\u2019clock Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bassett is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Adams Bassett, former resident of North Manlius and sister of Carl W. Adams of North Manlius, a son, Paul Adams Bassett of Gardner, Mass., and a daughter, Mrs. Elida Cory of Bay Shore, L.I.
