\nRetired Merchant Expires Following Attack of Apoplexy; Native of Virginia<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PAINTED POST, Oct. 11 \u2013 Benjamin Clark Bassett, 76 years old, for many years a prominent merchant of this village died at his home on Water street about 11:30 o\u2019clock last evening following a stroke of apoplexy which occurred sometime during the afternoon.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bassett had been about as usual during the day. About four o\u2019clock, Mrs. Mary Holmes who worked for him as housekeeper, found him lying in the kitchen unconscious. Assistance was called and Mr. Bassett removed to his bed. Death came about 11:30.<\/p>\n
Mr. Bassett was born in Bedford County, Virginia and came to Coopers with his parents when a small lad. The remainder of his life had been spent in this section with the exception of 10 years, 1870 to 1880, when he lived in Nebraska. For many years he was a merchant in Painted Post. He retired from business several years ago.<\/p>\n
He was married in 1869 to Miss Alsetia Hitchcock who died in 1880 in Nebraska. To this union five children were born. They were Mrs. Minnie Morse, of Philadelphia, Mrs. Lulu McGill, of Troy, Mrs. Emma J. Northaway, of East Sparta, Ohio, Charles N. Bassett of Ovendo, Mont., and B.H. Bassett, whose whereabouts are not known here.<\/p>\n
In 1883 Mr. Bassett married Miss Helen Lambert, of Painted Post, who is living in California. The following children by this marriage survive; Mrs. Belle McWilliams, of Hornell, Mrs. Herman Serrins and Mrs. Norman Littleton, both of Corning; Miss Charlotte Bassett of Rochester; Miss Helen of California and Lambert Bassett of Hornell.<\/p>\n
Two brothers, Samuel of Gibbons, Nebraska and George of Coopers and a sister, Mrs. Matilda Wallace, of Canandaigua also survive.<\/p>\n
The funeral arrangements have not been arranged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
