\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Among Dr. Bailey\u2019s treasures is a very large powder horn which was carried by his great grandfather in the Revolutionary War. On it is engraved \u201cSeth Bassett for Liberty, His Horn, Roxbury Camps, Made February 24, 1776.\u201d There is also engraved a picture of the camp and one of a rooster. The morning before the battle a rooster flew upon a post and crowed. Mr. Bassett predicted that it was an omen that they would win the battle, which they did.<\/p>\n
I have been doing Bassett research for more than 40 years, and this could be one of my favorite Bassett finds. Last month, while searching for information about Seth Bassett of New York, I came across the birthday announcement for Dr. Bassett N. Bailey of New York. An excerpt of this article is included above. I found it interesting to see the Seth Bassett powder horn mentioned. In checking my Bassett manuscript, I had a reference to this powder horn from the 1920\u2019s. It was then owned by Wayland George Bassett, great-grandson of Seth Bassett of Revolutionary War fame. Wayland George had no children and I always wondered might have become of this family heirloom.<\/p>\n
Using the information from the article below, I found that Dr. Bassett Bailey had only one child, a daughter. This daughter had only one child, a son. This son had recently passed away and using information from his obituary I located his daughter. It was hard to believe, but she said she had inherited a bunch of Bassett material, and it included this Seth Bassett powder horn.<\/p>\n
