\nDeath of John C. Bassett<\/p>\n
Another of our leading business men and prominent citizens has yielded to the \u201cReaper whose name is Death,\u201d and no more will be seen among us.<\/p>\n
John C. Bassett, died at his residence on Burdick Street, yesterday afternoon at one o\u2019clock and 40 minutes, in the 41st<\/sup> year of his age. His last illness, which was Typhoid fever, began some four weeks ago.<\/p>\n Mr. Bassett lived several years in Branch County, and came to Kalamazoo in 1845. He began in trade in one of the stores of the Davenport block, corner of Main and Edwards streets. His business career is known to all our citizens, and has been one of great success. In 1846 he formed a copartnership with the late Jas. A. Walter, which continued a number of years. Subsequently Mr. Charles R. Bates became associated with Mr. Bassett, and has remained a partner with him until the day of his death.<\/p>\n The health of Mr. Bassett has not been good for several years, and during the past 14 months he has suffered a great deal from ill health. It is but little more than a year since his wife died, and at that time Mr. Bassett was himself in a critical condition, and from that sickness he has never fully recovered.<\/p>\n Mr. Bassett has been prominent among the business men of Kalamazoo for many years and his loss at this time will be very apparent. Within the past year he has been more than usually active in matters of public improvement and local prosperity. He has always been devoted to the interests of Kalamazoo, and has contributed liberally to promote her progress. No man in this village was better known throughout Western Michigan, than Mr. Bassett. He had hosts of friends at home and abroad, and either as a business man here, or a companion on a fishing or hunting excursion, he was found to be all that could be desired. He was passionately fond of field sports, in which he has of late years very often indulged.<\/p>\n Mr. Bassett leaves his little boy, five years old, in the hands of his sister who has had the care of him since Mrs. Bassett died. On Saturday he made his will and closed up all his business matters, and this was done with perfect clearness of mind and with as thorough a regard to details, as though he had been in good health. Soon afterwards, however, he became unconscious and remained so until death ensued.<\/p>\n The funeral will take place from the house on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o\u2019clock.
