      TURNERS FALLS - Amelia A. ""Millie"" (Markol) Bessette, 87, of 28 Avenue C, passed peacefully at home on Monday, October 30, 2017 following a period of declining health. A native of Montague, MA, she was born on January 17, 1930 to Joseph and Mary (Sliva) Markol. Millie attended Montague Public Schools and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School in the Class of 1947. While at TFHS, she was a straight ""A"" student and was active in numerous school activities. During her high school years, she worked at the former Cone Shop, Sullivan's Drug Store and later, Simmons Jewelry Store.
      Millie accepted a position with the former Greenfield Tap & Die Corporation in 1962, as a clerk typist. She was rewarded for her diligence and work ethic and was promoted to general clerk, payroll clerk, secretary in the treasurer's office, secretary to the division comptroller and lastly, to the position of Payroll Supervisor from 1985 until her retirement in 1992 with 30 years of service. While at GTD, she attended various evening continuing education courses at Greenfield Community College and was once again, a straight ""A"" student. Millie also waitressed weekends at Thomas Memorial Golf and Country Club in Turners Falls, MA, with her husband Charlie who bartended many of the events. Millie remembered these times fondly, as they were able to connect with many of their old friends.
      In her post retirement, Millie worked part-time at the Poet Seat Nursing Home as an administrative assistant, later volunteering at Our Lady of Peace Church as a receptionist.
      Millie enjoyed many interests that included: painting (using the mediums of oil and acrylics) and fine art. She was a crossword and scrabble enthusiast. In addition, she was a member for over 20 years (up until the time of her passing) of a card group that met weekly for pitch and poker games. She also enjoyed home decorating. Millie was a devout communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church, where she was a member of the choir since the age of 17 for over 60 years.
      She married Charles F. ""Charlie"" Bessette, on May 8, 1948 in the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls, MA. They celebrated 53 years of marriage prior to his passing on May 22, 2001.
      Survivors include her two loving sons: Gary Bessette of Turners Falls, MA and Dana F. Bessette and his wife Joan, of Turners Falls, MA. Additionally, she is remembered with great affection by her siblings: Adella (Markol) Campbell and her husband Roland ""Slip"" of Turners Falls, MA and Stanley Markol of Thousand Oaks, CA, along with 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband Charles F. Bessette, Jr., her sister Theresa Markol (in infancy), her brother Joseph Markol and his wife Amelia and by her grandson Benjamin Bessette.
      Funeral services will be observed on Friday, November 3, 2017 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00AM at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA. Rites of committal and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA. The Bessette family will receive guests in the vestibule of Our Lady of Peace Church on Friday morning, at 10:00AM until the time of the funeral liturgy. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in Millie's memory, are requested in lieu of flowers to Our Lady of Peace Church, in c/o the Parish Choir, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
