Frances Louise Bassett
Bassett, Frances Louise (Macoughtry) Ypsilanti, MI. Age 93, died Thursday,
November 13, 2008, of complications from a stroke with her family by her side.
She was born February 28, 1915, in Attica, IN the daughter of Francis W. and
Frances (Petit) Macoughtry. Her father was a civil war veteran who was in the
Indiana 86th Regimental Volunteers Company E. Frances attended many of her
father's annual reunions with fellow veterans. She graduated from Attica High
School in 1932, the University of Indiana in 1936 and the University of
Illinois Library School in 1937. She was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority
and Phi Beta Kappa. Frances worked at Cornell University Library, and later,
Penn State University Library. She married Curtiss D. Bassett on December 27,
1940, in Port Huron, Michigan. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1986. She
was a member of the Congregational-United Church of Christ of Ypsilanti since
1945, the MSPE Wives Auxiliary, and a board member and officer of the Visiting
Nurses Agency. She volunteered in past years with the Well Child Clinic of the
Visiting Nurses Agency, Church Women United, Girl Scouts of America and the
local Humane Society as a cat comforter. Survivors include daughters,
Charlotte (James) Greer of Wheatland, Wyoming; Barbara Bassett of Ypsilanti
and Katherine (Robert) Asam of Belleville; grandchildren, James E. Greer, II
of Boise, Idaho, Julie (Ron) Howard of Wray, Colorado and Janice (Will) Smith
of Jackson, Wyoming; four great grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlin Howard and
Ally and Zack Smith; her cousin Charlotte (Frank) Mason of Jackson, Michigan
along with several nieces and nephews. During her years with Curt, they loved
to travel across the U.S. visiting National Parks among other historical areas
with their daughters. They also enjoyed kayaking along the coast of
Connecticut and later at Lake Huron and other local lakes. She enjoyed sewing,
writing, hiking, swimming, communicating in later years on her WebTV,
crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and at age 90 went down the Snake River on a
raft in Jackson, Wyoming. Frances loved her family and friends and cherished
each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her beloved pets, Sugar and
Riley preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m,
Saturday, November 29, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti.
The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of
service. Burial will take place in Port Huron at Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of Huron
