Mary Bassett (1926-2015)
Mary Elizabeth Bassett, née Harnicar, 89, passed away at home on April 17, 2015 after a brief, intense illness.
Mary was born in Morris, Connecticut on January 8, 1926 to Andrew and Mary Harnicar. She graduated from Litchfield High School in Litchfield, Connecticut and later married George Edmund Bassett on August 2, 1947.
In 1958, the couple moved to Weed Heights, Nevada where Mary's geologist husband went to work for the Anaconda Copper Mine. Mary happily became a homemaker for her husband and children. In 1978, mining took them to Jackpile and Laguna, New Mexico before George retired in 1984 back to Sparks, Nevada. She and her husband lived happily in Sparks until his death in 2002 and hers in 2015.
Mary is survived by her three children Robert, Lucius, and Cynthia Bassett, as well as her three grandchildren Kristen Richardson and William and Michael Bassett, all of Sparks. She is also survived by brothers Andrew and Albert Harnicar and sisters Helen Forsythe and Marjorie Hotchkiss, all of Connecticut. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mary Harnicar, brother Joseph Harnicar, and sister Frances Russell, also all of Connecticut.
A private, family memorial will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada, where Mary will be laid to rest beside George Bassett, her husband of 55 years.
