      John Spencer Folawn, Col., US Army (Ret)

      John Folawn was born June 3, 1921 in Boulder, CO, the son of Thomas J. and May Evelyn (Stevens) Folawn. He graduated from the University of Colorado and was in law school when he entered World War II military service as an Aviation Cadet in 1942. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1944, he served as an aerial navigator in the Pacific Theater of Operations, with the 13th Air Force, flying 21 combat missions. At the end of World War II he returned to Boulder and completed his legal training at the University of Colorado in 1948. Thereafter, he was employed briefly with Shell Oil Company in Casper, WY, but re-entered military service in June 1949 as a Judge Advocate, and served as a regular Army officer until his retirement in 1972. During his 26 years of distinguished military service, he served in Germany, Hawaii, California, South Korea and Virginia. He was involved in the Army defense in the McCarthy hearings in 1954 and was the recipient of the Legion of Merit Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal in addition to other military service medals and decorations. In 1969 he was sworn in as an appellate military judge of the U.S. Army Court of Military Review, the highest appellate body within the Army for review of court martial cases, where he served until his retirement in 1972.

      Following his retirement from the Army, he served as the Attorney-Advisor, Presidio of San Francisco from 1974 to 1980. From 1981 to 1987 he served as member and President of the Board of Directors of Project 90, a men's alcohol and drug treatment facility in San Mateo. He later served several years as a member and officer of the Board of Directors of The Project 90 Foundation.
      Colonel Folawn was married to Catherine Ann (Hasenauer) Folawn in 1943 until her death in 1975. They were the parents of and are survived by son John Steven Folawn (Winnie) of Portland OR. and daughter Carol Folawn Johnson (Harry) of Arvada, CO.

      He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sue Bassett Folawn, and three step-daughters- Kelly Kabeary of Stockton, CA, Barbara Kabeary D'Ercole (Ronald) of Saratoga, CA and Susan Kabeary Corley (Bob) of Marietta, GA.; He also leaves eleven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by grandson, Andrew Peder Johnson in 1978.

      He died in his home in San Mateo on December 13, 2014. He was a treasured husband and father, mentor and friend. He will be deeply missed.
      At his request there will be no services. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Project 90, Inc.720 So. B Street, San Mateo 94401 or Second Harvest Food Bank, 4001 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95134 in his honor.
