Helen Bassett
PEORIA - Helen Martin Bassett, 97, of Christian Buehler Memorial Home died
there at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005. Born April 24, 1907, in Terre
Haute, Ind., to James G. and Hazel D. Slusser Fagg, she married Hugh H. Martin
on June 16, 1925, in Peoria. He died Oct. 16, 1957, in Peoria. She later
married L. Gordon Bassett on Nov. 22, 1969, in Peoria. He died Feb. 18, 1997,
in Peoria. She also was preceded in death by four brothers. Surviving are one
daughter, Faye Wallace of Peoria; one sister, Dorothy Behrll of Mission Viejo,
Calif; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. She was a member of t
Peoria Women's Bowling Association and served as its secretary for 20 years
until 1972. She also was a member of the Peoria Women's Bowling Association,
its 24 City Championships and its 600 and 700 clubs. She also was inducted
into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. She was City Bowling Champion for
several years and National Singles Bowling Champion in 1954. She was a member
and past president of American Legion Post 2 Auxiliary. She was a longtime
member of Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of
United Presbyterian Church. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Wilton
Mortuary, where visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and on hour before
services. The Rev. Dr. Kenn Shedenheim will officiate. Burial will be in Swan
Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian
Church Building Fund.
