      Dorothea Bassett Schall
Memorial service for Dorothea Bassett Schall, 95, Holly Hill, will be held 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Central Baptist Church, 142 Fairview Ave. with Pastors Jim Smith and Chuck McKeown officiating. Dorothea left this world for God's Kingdom May 30, 2008. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, May 15, 1913, and grew up in Rockland County, New York. It was there that she met and married John Schall where they opened a fruit and vegetable market. Due to her husband's ill health, the family came to Florida during the winter months and finally moved permanently to the Daytona Beach area in 1953. Dorothea was a loving and dedicated wife and mother, becoming the stabilizing force and "Rock of Gibraltar" for her family, particularly when her husband became totally disabled. She worked in many of the finest restaurants in the area eventually opening their own restaurant, Dot & John's Marigold House which was located at the current site of the Ocean Walk Complex. During this time, she also worked for over 20 years for the Daytona Beach Police and Volusia County Sheriff's Departments as the school crossing guard for North Ridgewood Elementary School and St. Paul's Catholic School. She accompanied many school safety patrols to Washington D.C. and other areas. Dot loved flowers and traveling with her family, and with the P.O.R.T. and Three Score travel groups. She and her husband started Channel 32 CB Club as "The Alaskan & Alaskan Lady". They enjoyed many outings with them. Dorothea loved Jesus and was active in Central Baptist Church, Daytona Beach, and United Brethren Church, Holly Hill. She is predeceased by her husband, John Schall, Sr.; grandson, Jamie Esposito; and brother, Harry Bassett. She is survived by four children; son, John Jr. (Cleo) their children, Ronald, Troy and Nick Schall, Broadway, N.C., Barbara Courgh, Ohio, and Ricky Shiprow, North Carolina; daughter, Elaine Still and her children, Deborah Bell, Martin and Michael Still, Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Nancy Jones (Bill), South Daytona, and Nancy's children, Joseph Smith, Alabama, and Dan Smith, Holly Hill; plus seven stepchildren; daughter, Diana Allen along with her, selected by love, children, John Moore, Holly Hill, and Desie Damaso, Ormond Beach. She also had a guardian angel, Willis Gould. She has over 30 plus great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. All of her children have expressed the sentiment that if everyone had a mother like theirs this world would be a better place. There will be a "Celebration of Life" at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Central Baptist Church Camp or United Brethren Youth Ministry. Condolences can be shared with the family online at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona.
