Raymond Bassett
Raymond Miller Bassett, BA (Queen's), LLB (Manitoba) 1925-2007, after a long illness. Ray passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 8 surrounded by his family. Born in Neepawa, Manitoba and raised in Cannington, Ontario, Ray joined the army at 17 before attending Queen's University and later pursuing a legal career that took him from Winnipeg to Montreal to Toronto before finally settling in Victoria. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his beloved wife Barbara (nee Blackett), children Jane Berlin (Saul), John (Louise), grandchildren Sarah and Andrew Februson, Adam and Jordan Berlin, Owen, Spencer and Christopher Bassett and many other family and friends. Ray is predeceased by his son Bill and brother John. Many thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the Royal Jubilee Hospital Renal Unit who helped make his last months so comfortable. Ray will be forever remembered for his kindness, wisdom and sense of humor. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m. at First Memorial, 1155 Fort St., Victoria. Interment will be held at a later date in Cannington, Ontario. In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice or to the Vancouver Island Kidney Patients Association would be appreciated.
