      DOVER - Herbert F. Bassett, 90, of Central Towers, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Rochester Manor.
      He was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Portsmouth, the son of George and Sadie (Oates) Bassett, baptized Roman Catholic and attended St. Mary's School. He lived in South Berwick, Maine, for 50 years before moving to Dover more than 38 years ago.
      He served in the U.S. Army, Battery B 744th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion during World War II from 1939 to 1945. He fought for our Country in the Pacific Theater (East Indies and New Guinea). He was awarded The Good Conduct Medal, The American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 5, 1945.
      He was a former employee of the United Tanners of Dover. He had also worked at Eliot High School as a custodian until his retirement.
      Herb was a self-taught carpenter, plumber, electrician and painter. He knew the history of Dover and enjoyed sharing it with anyone with the same interest. He will be remembered by his friends and family for all of the great BBQs, annual Christmas Eve parties and home movies.
      He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris (Brault) Bassett of Dover; four daughters, Diane Anderson of South Berwick, Maine; Donna Bassett of Dover; Debra Anton of Rollinsford; and Denise Stephan of Bradenton, Fla.; four sisters, Barbara Durant of California, Doris Bassett, Roberta Robbie and Shirley Davis, all of Dover; three grandchildren, Nicole Baggs, Shalease Stephan and Mark Stephan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
      He was predeceased by four brothers, Gordon, Harold, Walter and Ralph Bassett and one sister, Louise Gobbi.
      The funeral Mass will be Thursday 10 a.m. at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church (corner of Chestnut and Thirds streets). Relatives and friends are invited to call one hour prior to the Mass, 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Burial will be in St. Mary New Cemetery.
