North County civic leader Frances Bessette Dies
Dannemora – Mrs. Frances A. Bessette, 65, of Smith Street West, Dannemora died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1987, at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo.
She was born in Dannemora on Sept. 25, 1921, the daughter of the late Louis and Celia (Greenburg) Alpert.
Mrs. Bessette was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. She had retired from the Clinton County Youth Commission, and had also helped to establish the credit union for Clinton County. She had worked for J.C. Penney, was former manager of Stellen’s at the North Country Shopping Center, and was a past president of the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA).
She had been involved with Boy Scouts of America Troop 244 of Cadyville and many youth activities. She was formerly active in the Catholic Daughters of America in Dannemora.
Mrs. Bessette was a member of the Plattsburgh Women’s Bowling Association and was member emeritus of the state WBA Board of Directors. Locally she was president of the Plattsburgh Women’s Bowling Association for 22 years. She helped organize American Junior Bowling Congress in Plattsburgh in 1963 and served as its president-secretary-director from 1963 to 1981. She also helped organize the Clinton County Bowling Council and served as its secretary-treasurer.
She was a charter member of the New York State Women’s 600 Bowling Club and was president of North Country Progressive Women Bowlers, from which she received the Hall of Fame Award.
She is survived by her husband, Maurice Bessette of Dannemora; three sons, William L. Bessette of Chazy Lake, Robert Bessette of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Richard Bessette of San Diego, Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Jerome (Bertha) Prigoff of Fayetteville, Mrs. Ruth Ayres and Mrs. William (Anna) Light, both of Plattsburgh, and Miss Delia E. Alpert of Roxbury; two grandsons, William and Michael Bessette of Chazy Lake and two granddaughters, Kristin and Tracey Bessette of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora.
Burial will follow in Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens in Plattsburgh.
Donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
