‘Lonely Drinker’ Modern Bar Note
Tarrytown - Matthew Bassett, who started work at the Hotel Florence 51 years ago when the coach and four was running to New York, advised in an interview that sociability has gone out of the taproom.
“There is too much lonesome drinking today. People don’t mix with each other at the bar nearly as much as they used to,” he said.

Bassett Will Mark Birthday
Matthew Bassett, one of Tarrytown’s fine oldtimers and dean of cocktail mixers now living with his niece, Mrs. Fred Hennessey at Richmond Hill, Long Island, will be eighty-five tomorrow.
Mr. Bassett, despite his great age, is enjoying good health aside from being unable to walk about as he could a couple of years ago, with the aid of a cane, however, he manages to get about some. Mentally he is quite as well as he was years ago.
Mr. Bassett was one of Tarrytown’s earliest restaurant men, his late brother William and himself operating a restaurant on Orchard Street, and later for many years they operated “The Office”, on Lower Main Street, which was one of the most popular taverns in this section and a stopping place for the professional and businessmen for many years up to the time they gave up the business in 1918.
After a number of years in retirement, Mr. Bassett accepted a position in charge of the Hotel Florence bar after the repeal of prohibition, serving up to about three years ago when he retired. Since going to reside with his niece at Richmond Hill, Mr. Bassett has returned occasionally to renew old acquaintances and each time he comes back there is a big welcome for him staged at the hotel.
