Bessie Bassett
SUMMERVILLE – Mrs. Bessie Helen Bassett, 80, of 100 Pete Ewers Drive, Summerville, died Friday morning, February 8, 2008, at her residence. She was twice married, first to the late Riddick Ben DeWitt and secondly to the late Jerry Bassett. Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, February 11, 2008, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Peniel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Peniel Road, Walterboro. Mrs. Bassett was born April 12, 1927, in White City, Kentucky, and was a daughter of the late George ALbert Garris and Nellar Gamblin Garris. She was of the Southern Baptist Faith and had a love for crafts and sewing. Surviving are: three sons, Donald R. DeWitt of Summerville, Elijah “Gomer” DeWitt and his wife Ann of Land-O-Lakes, Florida, and Harold Ben DeWitt of Walterboro; two daughters, Helen Mae DeWitt of Goose Creek and Mary Katherine Guard and her husband Garry of Zalfo Spring, Florida. There are ten grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
