Don was a graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke and Auburn University. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radio navigator. He had a long career with Georgia Power Company and Southern Company Service. He had a love of the outdoors and horseback riding. His love of horseback riding began when his family moved to the country in high school and he and his cousins all received horses and started riding. Later, he rode when participating in historic Civil War reenactments. Don enjoyed socializing with his friends in the Cullman area, including listening to music and dancing at the VFW and Jack's Truck Stop. Another one of his favorite things to do was to attend family reunions in Dublin, Georgia.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Guy G. Bassett; and his mother, Annie Elizabeth Bassett, both of Roanoke, Al.
He is survived by sisters, Nancy (Coley) Holloway and Patricia (Gene) Barck; daughters, Donna (Rusty) Blythe, Lynne (Jesse) Turner; son, Stuart (Rita); and grandchildren, Brandon, Darci, Hannah, Sarah and Mathew.
The family wishes to thank Amedisys Hospice Services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
